Singer-songwriter/producer Dan Wilson proves you can go home again.
As a Tax Day treat for Minneapolis residents, local record store The Electric Fetus hosted Wilson for a free in-store performance on this, the day-of-release of his long awaited second album, Love Without Fear (+180 Records).
Wilson, who cut his musical teeth on local legendary bands Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic, is a local native who transplanted to Los Angeles a few years ago, after his songwriting skills became more in demand, which in turn resulted in Grammy wins and working with the likes of The Dixie Chicks and Adele.
In between all of the A-list collaborations, he has been diligently working on the follow-up to 2007’s Free Life and has guest appearances on the new release from the likes of Lissie, Sara Bareilles, Missy Higgins, and others. Playing solo on acoustic guitar for just shy of 30 minutes for this promotional appearance, four of five Wilson songs were from the new album, with the remaining one from his first solo effort (no older band songs unfortunately).
Starting with the new album’s title track, Wilson was affable and chatty about his songwriting process in between songs, as he re-tuned his guitar. Lead single, ‘Disappearing’ had come together as a result of his preferred creative process- having a few hundred note cards on his piano with random lines, unfinished melodies, and partial ideas and sometimes taking those random cards and making a whole out of the parts. In the case of ‘Disappearing’, Wilson finished the song then sent it to Bareilles, to add her touches to what would become the final version.
‘A Song Can Be About Anything’ followed, with its melancholy lyrics about a love once flourishing, now wilting on the vine. ‘All Kinds’, from his first solo effort featured a “super nice, but super quiet” sing-a-long of the chorus by the audience, perhaps embodying the understated Minnesotan way of enjoying something without making any ruckus about it. ‘Your Brighter Days’, a song filled with hope and light, finished the mini-set to applause and calls for more.
In a conversation after the performance, Wilson mentioned to be recently writing and collaborating with Florence Welch, new UK songstress Birdy, and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James among others, but wouldn’t confirm or deny if he was again working with Adele for her next album. Wilson did admit though, that his tolerance for the Minnesota-like cold temperatures has severely waned, since moving to the sunny West Coast.
The good news for Minneapolis is that he’ll be returning in early June, for a three-night stand at the Cedar Cultural Center; the bad news for those that don’t have tickets, is that all shows are sold out. The hometown still obviously loves him.
