When Badly Drawn Boy (aka Damon Gough) first tasted mainstream success with his debut album The Hour of Bewilderbeast and winning 2000 Mercury Music Prize (beating out fan-favorites Doves for the £20,000 prize), he started concentrating on the U.S. market by brief preview tours in both 2000 and
2001.
I caught Badly Drawn Boy at the Minneapolis show at the Fine Line Music Café on May 7th, 2001.
The thing about this show was that it was possibly the longest show I have ever attended. That show actually is still on my personal record for longest show by a live artist. I couldn't tell you the length of time, but I believe it was close to three hours. When was the last time you saw an artist play for three hours? That's a very long length of time, especially for a "new" artist with only one album under his belt!??
The worst part was I was so very, very tired on this Monday evening. According to the ticket, the doors opened at 9pm, which meant the opener probably didn't start until ten, and Badly Drawn Boy wouldn't have come on until 10:45pm or later. Anyway, I nearly died of exhaustion waiting around for the very, very, very extra long encore.

I do recall it being nearly three hours. He also shoved a mic in my face and a couple other people to ask our names. I distinctly remember you [Vu] moving back quite a few steps so you wouldn't have to participate. He was in a really good mood, too. I had heard he could be temperamental, but he was totally into it. The next time I saw him, he wasn't so happy with the sound and he kept getting pissy about it.
I never saw Badly Drawn Boy again after this, I think this long show was enough for me. Badly Drawn Boy's seventh album It's What I'm Thinking Pt.1 came out in 2010, to be followed by a trilogy of album. His latest release is the soundtrack Being Flynn from March 2012.
