Here is another flashback article, documenting some old shows I've seen prior to W♥M.
No photos for this show, because back then cameras and recording devices were banned at shows. Most concert venues actually pat you down before you could enter the premises.
I went to this Placebo show because I was actually an Idlewild fan. I'd previously seen Idlewild earlier in April at the smaller 7th Street Entry, which is right next door to First Avenue, for their 100 Broken Windows tour, so I was looking forward to seeing the Scottish band again as opener for Placebo.
Prior to their First Avenue show, Idlewild did an acoustic promotional appearance at Let It Be Records, a nice record store on Nicollet Mall (the record shop is no longer around). I don't remember the songs they did, but it was a short standard two or three songs set. This was a great way of meeting the band at a tiny setting.
As for their main First Ave show, according to Setlist.fm, they did my two favorite 100 Broken Windows songs ("Little Discourage" and "Roseability").
The Minneapolis show was Placebo's third show with Idlewild, so they were getting along pretty well, having played with them in Detroit and Chicago.
I think tickets to this show was rather expensive (back in 2001). Since I primarily wanted to see the opening band, I didn't felt it was a bargain for me, considering Idlewild's 7th Street Entry show was probably less than $10 (confirmed, show was only $8). Despite my bitter complaints, I think this was a great way to finally see Placebo at an 'intimate' First Avenue show. The band, at this time, were headlining massive UK festivals, so seeing them at First Avenue was a deal, even at $30. Clearly, I have faulty memory. This news clipping indicate the show was only $10!
According to the number on my ticket stub, they sold over 1,000 advance tickets. I suspect the show was sold out, based on the double encore! I find that bands, when they are pleased at a turnout will overplay, because of they are 'slaves to the fans'. Anyway, if they did sell out, it's quite an achievement for this 21 and over show.
As you can see from the setlist, half of their set were from their 2000 album, Black Market Music ("Haemoglobin", "Days Before You Came", "Passive Aggressive", "Slave to the Wage", and "Black-Eyed" ), and the other half made up of their self-titled debut album and Without You I'm Nothing from 1998 (this album contained my favorite "Every You Every Me" song, which they played live).
Currently, Placebo is out on tour in support of their recently released album Loud Like Love (Universal Music).
