Here is another flashback article, documenting some old shows I've seen prior to W♥M.
Again, I primarily went to this show because of the opening band, Looper. I am a huge Belle & Sebastian fan, so I followed the related bands quite closely.
Looper was B&S' bassist Stuart David and his wife, Karn, long before that science fiction movie.
They released their penpal "Impossible Things" song on Sub Pop, which I own on 7". The song was "remixed" later and "Impossible Things #2" would appear on their debut album Up a Tree in 1999.
I've actually seen Looper as headliner before at the 400 Bar on July 14, 1999, but for some odd reason, I thought it was at the 7th Street Entry. According to City Pages, Kitty Craft was the opener.
I remember they opened up their show with "Mondo '77" (which hadn't been released as a single at the time). For "Impossible Things", and I want to say that Karn brought out an old fashion typewriter on stage to make the typing noise. Karn did not do the typewriter-thing or have a movie projection at the Flaming Lips show, possibly due to saving time.
What I do have are evidences of their show at First Avenue, which is well documented with this ticket stub and a newspaper clipping published in the Star Tribune, spotlighting their show with the Flaming Lips.
I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night. Anyway, they were coming off a huge buzz from their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin, which many fans considered this their masterpiece album. I think this was also the album that you can play against some movie and the music would make sense with the film. At least that's the story I got from talking to some hardcore fans standing in line for this show.
I don't remember what was played, but I am pretty sure that did not play "She Don't Use Jelly", which was the only song I was hoping to hear.
Currently, the Flaming Lips released their 13th album The Terror on Warner Bros Records.
