Originally the Charli XCX show at the Schubas Tavern in Chicago sold out, so the promoters booked an additional late show. That too sold out, and we were lucky enough to have caught her before she leaves Illinois.
Opening up for the band for all the U.S. dates are Kitten, a Los Angeles-based band, led by talented 18 year old Chloe Chaidez. They must have left quite an impression, based on a few fans in the audience holding onto Kitten's EP from the merch table.
Charli XCX came on stage in a white leather jacket and sunglasses and kicked off her (late) set with "Set Me Free", followed by "Nuclear Seasons". Both songs, as well as the majority of her set, were taken from her debut album True Romance, which came out in April via Asylum/Warner Music. She seemed incredibly pleased at the double sold-out show, and every few songs, you can hear her shouting, "CHICAGO!", and every time, the audience responded in kind with a massive cheer.
After "Stay Away", Charli discarded her jacket and sunglasses to reveal a loose night gown. She, and her all-girl backing band, looked gorgeous.
Of course, her biggest hit song, "I Love It", is actually made famous by Icona Pop. I sensed a little bitterness when she announced the song, "You all know this, I wrote this song. This is my song." Everyone went nuts and danced and sang along, especially during the big chorus of, "I. LOVE. IT." This is why you go to a live show, hearing Charli with the audience is a unique experience.
It would've been a good set if Charli had ended with that song, but the energy continued with her latest single, "Superlove", which was also well-received by the audience.
Encore featured Chloe from Kitten, who played the guitars to a cover song "I Want Candy", originally by The Strangeloves, but the version they played was by Bow Wow Wow (particularly because of the guitars). A million iPhones went up to record the event, of course.
Charli XCX and Kitten are currently on tour in the U.S. They play Columbus, Ohio, tonight.
