What is going on with Lou Reed?
The Velvet Underground pop icon is walking on the wild side, teaming up with Metallica to produce an upcoming album called Lulu. …
Velvet Underground singer and songwriter Lou Reed passed away yesterday (October 27th) at the age of 71. Having heard a cover version of "White Light/White Heat" by Those Darlins, the Velvet Underground were still fresh in mind when I heard of Reed's death.
Last night at the Head and the Heart's sold-out show at First Avenue, the DJ played V.U. songs between sets and ending with "Perfect Day" after the show. This is perhaps my favorite Lou Reed song.
Lou Reed, who took rock 'n' roll into dark corners as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist, died Sunday, his publicist said. He was 71.
The publicist, Peter Noble, confirmed Reed's death but released no details. Reed had undergone a liver transplant in May, his wife, the musician/performance artist Laurie Anderson, disclosed over the summer.
Reed was a rock pioneer who went from record label songwriter to a member of the short-lived but innovative and influential Velvet Underground. The band and Reed's solo work tackled taboo topics like drug addiction, paranoia and sexual deviancy in songs that were largely spare, muscular and often saturated in feedback.
His death came as a bit of a surprise because he was still relatively active in his advanced years, even teaming up with Metallica for their Lulu album.
Spin said that Kitten's 17-year-old singer Chloe Chaidez had "raw power and believability as a performer."
The Los Angeles indieband recently premiered "Japanese Eyes" on Nylon Magazine …
Charli XCX is a British singer/songwriter with a new album called True Romance. Although she's quite talented as a musician, she may actually be known more as a music writer, having scored a massive hit with "I Love It" for Icona Pop.
Anyway, Charli XCX had to postpone last month's U.S. tour to support Paramore in the U.K., but she's back now to play some shows this November … however, Minneapolis' date is nowhere to be found on the new itinerary! The closest city is in Chicago on November 6th. She's so popular in Chicago that she sold out Schubas Tavern and had to quickly add a second late (10pm) show. And, if you were wondering, yes, that second show is sold out too!
Opening up for all U.S. dates will be Kitten from Los Angeles. You may recall that we wrote about singer Chloe Chaidez when she was 17.
What's new with Kitten? Well, the band released their Like A Stranger EP on vinyl (on Oct 16th), so expect them to play some of those songs when you see them on tour with Charli XCX.

Charmingly neurotic and prolific singer/songwriter Mike Doughty has enjoyed a successful solo career for several years now. After kicking a nasty drug addiction …
Friday night Mike Doughty gave an ecstatic sold-out First Avenue crowd what they’ve been craving for so many years. The singer/songwriter is currently in the midst of a nationwide tour revolving around the re-imagining of songs he wrote with his former avant-garde 90s band Soul Coughing and he’s not beating around the bush about it: the trek is billed the “Mike Doughty used to be in Soul Coughing” tour. As someone who grew up with Soul Coughing (I bought El Oso with my Christmas money when I was 14 years old and kind of worked my way back with their catalogue) and who has followed Mike Doughty’s successful transition from weird rocker to reformed junkie to acoustic-oriented songsmith, I was eager to experience this part of Doughty’s musical history.
SONS OF HIPPIES
Florida-based psych-metal band Sons of Hippies opened the show with a surprisingly awesome blast to the senses. Think Hawkwind, early Deep Purple, the sweet rumblings of late 60s/early 70s hard rock. Now, throw in some space-rock compositions over crazy time signatures and a lead singer whose theatrical pipes are the love child of Siouxsie Sioux, Missing Persons vocalist Dale Bozzio and a little Axel Rose. Sons of Hippies are probably the coolest, loudest thing from Florida since Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids wreaked havoc in Ft. Lauderdale all those years ago.
Doughty took to the stage a short time later to spaghetti-western style intro music with his bandmates drummer Pete Wilhoit and bassist Catherine Popper (who played upright bass!!) Overall, the setlist favored songs from Soul Coughing’s first two records, 1994’s Ruby Vroom and 1996’s Irresistible Bliss to the delight of hardcore fans who were joyfully singing along. Under the streams of blue stage lights, Doughty played those terse opening guitar chords to “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago” and in his fantastic trademark drone sang, “A man drives a plane into the Chrysler Building.” Following that was the ultra-cool “Sugar Free Jazz” where Wilhoit really shined with his tight and precise drumming. When the loop to Raymond Scott’s sinister cartoon-y “Powerhouse” signaled the beginning of “Bus to Beelzebub,” the place went bonkers. It’s hard to resist the hook: “Get on to the bus that’s going to take you back to Beelzebub!”
After the great, uptempo b-side “Unmarked Helicopters,” that saw Popper rocking a moog bass, Doughty’s bandmates slipped off the stage. Armed with a sampler and a pair of turntables, Doughty sang a few tracks from Ruby Vroom like “Uh, Zoom Zip,” and “Mr. Bitterness.” Fan favorite “Screenwriter’s Blues,” a stream-of-conscious radio dialogue where Doughty assumes the role of disc jockey overseeing a surreal LA drive-time commute, deviated slightly from its original sound; Doughty traded in the sampled horns and piano for a starry, dance-y drum loop.
Despite a really enjoyable first half, the last four songs were what I was looking forward to the most. El Oso is my favorite Soul Coughing record so hearing “Monster Man” and “So Far I Have Not Found the Science” (which detoured into “Moon Sammy”) were quite exciting. My only complaint (and it isn’t even a complaint!) was the direction Doughty took with “St. Louise is Listening.” On the album, the song has a moody, echo-y atmosphere that crescendos with Doughty passionately singing, “I could be your baby doll/I could be your doll, baby.” The live interpretation lacked some of that erratic intensity. That said, being able to hear this song as well as the sublime “True Dreams of Wichita” (another one close to my heart) was thrilling.
Doughty kept the chatter to a minimum, but was in fine spirits; he chuckled at a small mosh pit that had developed at random points in the night and handled a heckler calling out for Doughty solo tunes with good humor (“I just can’t please you guys!”) Clearly, he was enjoying himself.
To the cynical, this tour could be misconstrued as a simple money-grab, a ploy to cash in on nostalgia. But to Doughty, like the writing of his 2012 memoir The Book of Drugs, it’s therapy. This is how he’s making peace with his Soul Coughing past and I, along with that sold out crowd, was glad to be a part of it.

I see a lot of shows, and one of the stand-out performances was seeing Devil Makes Three at the Triple Rock last year. They blew me away with their sold-out bluegrass/punk/country show
…
Rootsy acoustic threesome The Devil Makes Three will be bringing their spirited brand of folk and bluegrass to First Avenue next month! Dropping October 30th will be the band’s fourth full length album I’m a Stranger Here, which saw the trio working with Nashville producer and singer/songwriter Buddy Miller (Solomon Burke, Patty Griffin).
The group consists of singer/guitarist Pete Bernhard, guitarist Cooper McBean and Lucia Turino playing the coolest instrument of all: upright bass! After a warm reception at two notable festivals this year (American Music Festival in Nashville and San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass) TDM3 will be kicking off a fall tour in Colorado Springs on Halloween night.
Autumn is the absolute perfect time for this band to hit the road; their lively finger-picking-heavy melodies will serve as an excellent soundtrack to crisper temperatures and the brightly changing landscape. There’s also a haunted, nostalgic quality to the songs, especially lyrically. Themes like heartbreak and lonely nights spent with the bottle generously pepper the music. It’s some real dark night of the soul stuff, ragtime style.
The Devil Makes Three will be in Minneapolis Thursday November 7th. C’mon out and see what all the fuss is about!

Shinedown & Three Days Grace (with special guest P.O.D.) are currently on their co-headlining arena tour. They stopped over in Minneapolis' Target Center to rock the stadium.
…
I saw Three Days Grace on their co-headlining tour with Shrinedown, and I have to say that bar-none, Three Days Grace was the superior of the two bands based on their stage presence, their live show setup (fireballs!!) and tight set.
The Canadian rockers are enjoying eleven #1 singles on the Active Rock Radio, according to Mediabase, with their latest third single "Misery Loves My Company", from their successful chart debuting album Transit of Venus, current #1. This puts the band on par with other similar chart-topper acts: Linkin Park, Seether, Disturbed, and, of course, Godsmack.

Opening up for all the U.S. dates so far is Smallpools, a band based out of Los Angeles (although their guitarist Mike Kamerman said that he's from New Jersey, singer Sean Scanlon is from …
Next door, on the same name Tuesday (10/29), at the mainroom at First Avenue is Smallpools and Walk the moon and Twenty One Pilots.
Smallpools is an up-and-coming indie pop band, forming in early 2013. Based out of Los Angeles, the group consists of four members: Sean Scanlon (vocals), Mike Kamerman (guitar), Beau Kuther (drums), and Joe Intile (bass). Their first single "Dreaming" was released online in May of 2013, and has already been featured in the FIFA 14 soundtrack, as well as the show The Vampire Diaries. The debut self-entitled EP, under RCA Records, was released on July 16, 2013.
Smallpools recently went semi-viral on the internet when the group decided to "commandeer" a self-playing piano in the lobby of a movie theater. There they played an acoustic version of their hit single "Dreaming" which attracted a small crowd, including security. They were granted permission to finish, and, upon doing so, were peacefully escorted out. A bystander commented that they were "inspired" by the performance.

Friday we have Those Darlins at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. You might recall that we interviewed Jessi about the "controversial" album artwork and other things, so be sure to take a listen. …
Those Darlins are back at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis, touring in support of their third studio album Blur the Line (out now on Oh Wow Dang).
Opening up were local Pink Mink and New York's Gambles (aka Matthew Daniel Siskin).
GAMBLES
Gambles is a one-man-folk singer, whose look and sound resemble a young Bob Dylan, but perhaps leaning closer to Leonard Cohen (which we'll get to later). He would often just take sing in the crowd, which would have been cool if people weren't talking so much (since his unplugged acoustic guitar can only produce so much sound).
Gambles Setlist
As you can see from his setlist, the majority of his songs were from his debut album Trust (released last month on Alternative Distribution Alliance), with a few exception, like the Cohen cover song, "Chelsea Hotel". Another thing is that he skipped "You Are The Truth" (which sounded like it was switched to the last song) because his girlfriend (Nola) requested "Animal".
We've covered about seven Those Darlins shows, and I've personally attended about five of those shows. This is the first time that I've seen the band with the new bassist, Adrian.
As expected, the band practically played all their new songs from their latest album Blur The Line, leaving a little room to fit in a couple of old singles ("Screws Get Loose", "Night Jogger", "Be Your Bro") and a couple of cover songs (including Alex Chilton's "Free Again" and V.U.'s "White Light/White Heat" for the encore).
"Screws Get Loose" received the best reaction from the fans, probably because it's an older song (note that no songs from their debut album were played), but that was played fairly early in. You can tell fans aren't familiar with the new material yet, despite a great "eye-popping" performance of "Mystic Mind" by Jessie.
Also, this was the second to their last night with Gambles, all support will be handled by Diane Coffee on November 2nd. So they dedicated "Why Can't I Change?" to Nola.
Those Darlins are currently on tour in support of Blur The Line. I suggest getting a copy of the latest album before you see them.

ALPENGLOW
Alpenglow, a band from Vermont, with one band member (fiddler/banjo/jane-of-all-trades Elori Kramer) originally from Minneapolis.
Oddly they had a trumpet player who would show up on certain songs, but I do not think he's part of the regular band.
The folk band played songs from their debut Solitude, including the lead single "Solitude" and their set closer "Catskills".
Turnout to the Lucius show was terrific, for a Thursday night. It tells me that the next time the New York band come back around, that they're going to play a bigger venue, especially if they continue with their catchy 60s girl-group songs.
Lead by the two girl singers, Jess Wolfe & Holly Laessig, who dressed alike, look alike, and sings alike. They made it clear that they were extremely grateful to be in Minneapolis for the first time (although one of their guitarist said he has family here and would visit every Summer when he was younger).
As you can see from their setlist, the band played every song known to them. So if you've been listening to their EP and album Wildewoman, you will have a fantastic time.
"Goodbye"
Highlight from their set was their encore, as Alpenglow joined Lucius on stage to help sing "Free". After "Turn It Around" was played, the band went into the dancefloor and sang "Goodbye" in the middle of the crowd.
Lucius is currently on tour, their album Wildewoman is out now. They play Chicago tonight at Lincoln Hall.

When we last saw the lads of Dublin quartet Kodaline, they were opening on a spring tour for The Airborne Toxic Event, to great reception. Now that their debut full-length, In a Perfect World ..…
“I wanna travel the world, but I just can’t do it alone”, Kodaline vocalist Steve Garrigan sings in their song, ‘Brand New Day’. Because of the Dublin folk-based quartet’s recent success with breakout single, ‘All I Want’, and release of their debut full-length, In a Perfect World (RCA); the band (whose singer and guitarist have known each other since age 7), gets to do exactly that together—and their travels brought them to St. Paul’s Turf Club on a chilly fall Wednesday evening.
NYC-based songstress Diane Birch is the opener on this autumnal tour, but unfortunately for our market, was offered a chance to appear on the Tonight Show, so was forced to cancel her St. Paul appearance as a result. Local five-piece guitar-based indies The Joseph Bell dutifully filled in with a 30 min. set.
Steve Garrigan
Kodaline (lead singer Steve Garrigan, guitarist Mark Prendergast, bassist Jay Boland and drummer Vinny May Jr.) opened their 65 min. set with ‘After the Fall’, a thumping tempo’d song with somber lyrics about the end of a relationship, then followed with the lush ‘Pray’, Garrigan’s falsetto, similar to early Chris Martin, crooning over his own keyboard-based melody.
“How are you still holding on”, Garrigan pleads in ‘One Day’ and ‘Way Back When', a song about “growing up…not wanting to grow up” harkened back to their Irish childhood, Prendergast strumming playfully over May’s beating bass drum foundation.

The evening’s strongest highlight came late in the set, when the four left the stage and walked to a mid-room platform, to serenade an older woman with an acoustic, soulful doo-wop cover of Sam Cooke’s ‘Bring It On Home’ with full audience snapping (or ‘clicking’ as the Irish say) along.
Returning to the stage, cymbals shimmered and guitars strummed for their biggest song to date, ‘All I Want’. “Take my body”, Garrigan sang in the chorus, and the numerous females in the audience swooning with his every word, seemed eager to take him up on the offer. St. Paul has a rich Irish heritage as a city, and on this night, these four Dublin lads were shown a warm welcome, with a hope that they return again, sooner than later.

Here’s a little secret-- Little Green Cars are being driven by minors. As lead Stevie Appleby (vocals/ guitar) put it mid-way into their 60 min. set, “we’d love to join you drinking, but with these black ‘X’s’ on our hands…”
…
Ireland's Foy Vance is currently in America, touring in support of Joy Of Nothing. The album featured special guests such as Ed Sheeran and Bonnie Raitt.
The band's first proper headlining tour is getting a lot of buzz …
Since the last time we saw Little Green Cars (in April at the 7th St. Entry), they’ve gotten a bit of an update—new paint job, matching pinstripes, maybe some sport wheels. In actuality, they’ve been touring non-stop since then and ended their U.S. Tour Tuesday at Minneapolis’ First Avenue Mainroom, sounding more confident and road tested with perfectly honed harmonies, in a satisfying 70 min. performance that translated well inside the bigger venue.
FOY VANCE
First up for the evening was spirited Northern Irishman Foy Vance, touring in support of his latest, Joy of Nothing (Glassnote Records) , and who provided a 40 min. breath-of-fresh-air set filled with toe-tapping songs, no-holds-barred stories, and a brutally funny and honest nature of telling things like he sees them. Opening with the inspiring ‘Be the Song’, Vance entertainingly interspersed his unique commentary during the song breaks- “I used to live in London—very expensive and full of wankers” and defining his current status, “Any port in storm, ladies, any port” were among the hilarious bits that kept most of the audience’s attention.

Vance even went on to chastise the groups of people that were having full-voice conversations during his set, mentioning most attending were there for the actual music (which drew rave applause) and to the lot of people just there to be cool and seen, “good luck with all that…wankers”, which drew a collective laugh. In between, he moved from standing with guitar to sitting with a piano, playing a passionate ‘Feel for Me’, ‘Joy of Nothing’ ,and the set-closing ‘Guiding Light’ which he taught the audience the chorus to, and which we all continued singing, long after he left the stage. A unique treasure to be sure, especially live.
Little Green Cars
The Dublin quintet Little Green Cars (Stevie Appleby- voc/guitar; Dylan Lynch- drums; Donagh Seaver O'Leary- bass; Adam O'Regan- guitar; and Faye O'Rourke- co-voc., joined with Kevin, a touring keyboardist) began their set barely above a whisper, the acapella ‘Red’ with all members harmonizing under stark stage lighting, then gave way to the also delicate ‘Goodbye Blue Monday’, the band sounding assured in their combined voices.
Faye O'Rourke
The volume then amplified as soaring vocalist O’Rourke took over, with pipes and range reminiscent of Florence Welch with Dolores O'Riordan undertones. The boy/girl vocals were particularly effective on the driving ‘Angel Owl’ and four-part harmonies were on full display for radio hit ‘Harper Lee’. Most of the songs from their Glassnote debut, Absolute Zero, were played – the positively bouncy ‘Big Red Dragon’ and completely eerie ‘My Love Took Me Down to the River’ which starts quietly with an O’Rourke acapella, then builds impressively.
“It’s easy to fall in love with you”, starts their biggest hit, ‘John Wayne’ which had Appleby prefacing with a story of meeting an American girl and trying to impress her and the band ended the song with half the audience on-stage, dancing and singing along joyously.
For the encore, instead of the crowd again joining them on stage, the band decided to come out to the middle of the floor , for a quiet, off-mike version of ‘The Consequences of Not Sleeping’, surrounded on all sides by a mostly hushed and enraptured throng.
Though still somewhat nervous and reserved on stage, the group has definitely become more comfortable with the positive reception their indie folk-pop songs have been receiving and Appleby has gained a quicker wit when dealing with hecklers and responding on the fly.
The mostly younger crowd, was well-behaved with a few exceptions—those talking over the music, yelling idiot comments, and clearly not there for the bands; something both acts noted which was a little unfortunate on this, their final U.S. show before LGC returns to Europe and their first full-fledged tour of native Ireland. But, both Foy Vance and Little Green Cars rose above all of that, each delivering solid performances- and for those who weren’t paying full attention, you missed something exceptional.

Japanese noise band Melt-Banana is coming to Minneapolis on Wednesday, October 23rd, at the Triple Rock Social Club.
The duo (Yasuko Onuki and Ichirou Agata) is currently in the U.S. to do a "2 do what 2 fetch" tour …
Japanese noise artists Melt-Banana's show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis was incredibly well-attended for a Wednesday night. I suppose this is no surprise, having built up a hardcore following since their existence, almost twenty years ago.
Currently the live band only consists of singer/programmer Yasuko Onuki and guitarist Ichirou Agata. The rest of their music comes from a laptop full of drum samples and samples, a colorful programmed keypad that Yasuko uses throughout the show, and about five or six very large speakers and amps that they bring on tour with them. For just two people, they produced some of the loudest sound I've heard at live shows.
As you can see from their setlist, you have to read it top right to left (per Japanese reading order). I can't read Japanese, but I am guessing that they reference pre-programmed beats, effects, or samples (via the numbers).
I know there are over twenty tracks, but you have to also understand that their songs are incredibly short (with one one song only 30 seconds long!), true to any punk/experimental music.
With this type of music, in particular any foreign language metal, the audience isn't there to analyze or understand the lyrics, so often they give feedback by screaming "woo" or moshing to the harder songs… which inspired the duo to maintain a high level of energy during their performance.
Melt-Banana's latest album fetch, is out now, the Japanese band is currently touring under their so-called "2 do what 2 fetch" tour. Check out this legendary experimental noise band:
