Keep Shelly in Athens and Chad Valley are currently in a co-headlining tour through America, making their stop at Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry last night.
I missed Strange Relations, due to prior commitments, but from Laurie's previous mention of the band, she was "beyond impressed" by them.
Chad Valley came on stage with their own light setup, unfortunately the main source of light were fitted at the stand. I got the impression that Hugo Manuel didn't want to be in the spotlight anyway, as he prefer to pour out his emotional heartfelt lyrics to you, standing in the dark.
The Oxford band kicked off their set with "Tell All Your Friends" their debut album, Young Hunger. Any duets that were required from that album, such as "Evening Surrender", were handled by a live woman singer (sorry, she wasn't introduced).
Chad Valley's latest work is "Real Time", from his forthcoming Peace and Understanding mixtape. You can currently grab his debut Young Hunger on Cascine.
Cascine labelmates Keep Shelly In Athens took the stage at 11pm in similar darkness introduction. The band must have someone working the lights, because the songs seem to work along with the mood lighting.
The Greek band reminded me a little of Portishead, but not as trip-hop. Although they look "serious" on stage, you did get a glimpse that they are down to earth, especially when singer Sarah P broke the ice when she introduced her song "Stay Away": "It's called 'Stay Away', but don't take it literally. Please come closer."
Songs on their set included songs from their latest album At Home (including "Flyway"), but they did manage to throw in a few older tracks like "Running Out Of You" from In Love With Dusk EP.
The Cascine co-headliner tour Keep Shelly in Athens and Chad Valley will be heading to Vancouver on Tuesday. The tour ends in Brooklyn at the end of the month, so catch them before they fly back home to their respective countries.
