So, the live show was the first time I experienced Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, both in name and music... and they were GREAT. I love the high energy and the movie projection (of black entertainers mixed with weird . …
Austin TX-based Black Joe Lewis has just released a new album,Electric Slave (Vagrant Records), and is back on the road with a full tour to support, including an October 1st date in the Mainroom at First Avenue in Minneapolis.
Though the band remains the same, they’ve dropped the “and the Honeybears” from their name, but still retain the blues/garage sound that first brought them national acclaim. Think a cross of James Brown and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins fronting The Stooges and you’re part of the way there in describing their sound.
For a ferocious guitar night of funk, soul and fuzz rock, Black Joe Lewis has turned up their wall of sound, in hopes of getting your attention, which won’t disappoint, if the lead single, ‘Skulldiggin’, is any indication. Seattle-based indie-soul sextet Pickwick opens on the Midwest dates, and are worth arriving early for as well.

MS MR is an electro-pop duo from New York. Their latest EP, Candy Bar Creep Show, is available now. You can check the songs out via streaming on their msmrmusic.tumblr.com page. …
New York City-based duo MS MR has had a very busy year since WeHeartMusic last covered them and have just embarked on their first North American headlining tour. In support of their full-length debut, Secondhand Rapture (IAMSOUND/Columbia Records) the tour includes a Saturday night stop at Minneapolis’ 7th Street Entry, for an already sold-out show.
Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow have picked up much additional international buzz after successful festival appearances this summer at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Outside Lands. The HBO series Game of Thrones including their song ‘Bones’ probably didn’t hurt things either. The chillwave duo brings the grandeur of their brand of cinematic pop to a live setting, which should include a few choice cover versions, including one from LCD Soundsystem, so do what you can to locate a ticket.

Thrill Me Records wants you to stream their latest Mrs. Magician's B-Sides album right now on Soundcloud.
As the title of their record suggests, this is a B-Sides compilation of the entire Mrs. Magician's singles discography.
Frontman Jacob Turnbloom commented about the release, "I'm excited these songs are coming out on a physical release, in true Mrs Magician fashion. It's honest and self deprecating, everything I love about real pop-punk. It shows where Tommy Garcia (guitar) & I were when we started this band. It's a documentation of our friendship turned eventually into a band. It shows our growth as song writers and producers. I'm proud of the record no matter how imperfect it may seem, it's real and the lyrics reflect that."

The information I have is actually for The Naked and Famous, but I'm tossing them here because they are really excited about their new song, "Young Blood" getting a remixed treatment by White Sea (aka Morgan Kibby of M83 …
An eclectic mix of music lovers gathered this Tuesday afternoon at Sound Space in Los Angeles for an intimate set by New Zealand’s rock group The Naked and Famous. Radio-sponsored events in L.A. are usually a hit, not only for the freebies (this one being sponsored by Red Bull), but also how fun and extremely well executed they are. The band was all smiles as they ran up onstage, excited to play their 1st gig of their new tour to such an amped audience.
During the Q&A session prior to playing the band talked openly about their inspirations for their new album In Rolling Waves. Lead singer Alisa Xayalith and guitarist Thom Powers giggled as they divulged in the antics of being covered in pink and blue paint for an album shoot and the perils of LA life, where they relocated to write their latest tracks. Their songs have been picked up by a number of hot television shows, such as True Blood, Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy, just to scratch the surface. When the subject of Aaron Paul’s (Breaking Bad) affinity towards the band arose, darling Alisa pumped her fists in the air and exclaimed that the feeling was totally mutual. Thom added “It’s amazing how many people you can reach when your music is on T.V., along with social media outlets like Twitter.” These guys are opening for Nine Inch Nails and have played over 200 shows in 24 countries the past couple of years. Their idol is Batman and they write all of their songs. In short: They Rule.
The group started their set with the anthem track ‘Young Blood’ off their first album Passive Me, Aggressive You. What a set of lungs this girl has. The band’s energy skyrocketed and there was an unmistakable comradely between this fivesome... a certain truth that came out alongside their powerful lyrics. Next came ‘I Kill Giants’, which was inspired by a book series Alisa’s really into...being a bookworm and all. It’s also about her mother, which sent chills up my spine with the lyrics ‘The saddest of days...Why couldn’t we save you?’ The echoed mics add a nice touch to this one, and the harmonies are quite impressive. After breaking out an acoustic in ‘What We Want’, they played an oldie but a goodie, the inevitable crowd-pleaser ‘Punching’.
Alisa got out these egg-shaped objects filled with beads while simultaneously playing keys. These guys are wildly entertaining to watch and are obviously having the time of their lives onstage. After ending the set with their massively powerful track ‘Hearts Like Ours’, the group exited the stage while bowing gracefully to their fans. Catch them soon as they kick off their American tour- in a naked and famous kind of way.
The Naked and Famous at Red Bull Sound Space At KROQ, Los Angeles (09/24/13)
After a brief intermission, the stage screen rose to the sounds of Aretha Franklin's 'Who's Zoomin' Who" and each member of the Montreal indie-pop band Stars danced their way into position…
We like Stars here, having covered the band since we started W♥M. The Canadian band is making their way east in America.
According to the band, they're "hole up in small rooms and big old houses to begin another record", so expect a follow-up to their recent The North album. In the meantime, two tracks from their North session "Wishful" and "The Light" will be available as limited edition 7".

The Brian Jonestown Massacre we nearly at the top of my list of bands for the weekend and quite a fitting choice to end the Friday evening line-up. Not too raucous .…
Burger Records is an independent label that started in 2007 in Fullerton, California and is known for releasing cassette tapes of grunge/pop/garage bands. With cassettes gaining popularity in recent years (thanks for this are similarly shared with Portland's Gnar Tapes label) and the label signing such acts as Colleen Green, The Growlers and even releasing material from the ever-popular Brian Jonestown Massacre, the label is sure to keep on its upward climb. With what started out as the first Burgerama show in 2012 has now culminated into a full-blown bill of bands touring the country (and world).
Burgerama Caravan of the Stars Tour will find its way to the Twin Cities this Friday, September 27 at 8 pm, is a 21+ show and will be hosted by the Turf Club in St. Paul. Bands included on this tour are: The Growlers, Gap Dream, Cosmonauts, together PANGEA, The Memories, Colleen Green and many, many more. It's expected to be a tour like no other and those in love with small labels with exclusive releases and unique sounds should not miss out. Tickets are on sale here for $15: first-avenue or etix or at the Turf Club day of for the same price. I got a note that Crystal Stilts were extending their tour with Swedish indie darlings Love is All, so I thought I'd mention it here before I forget. Crystal Stilts is on Slumberland Records…
Crystal Stilts recently shared the video for "Star Crawl", taken from the band's forthcoming album, Nature Noir. The video directed by Daniel Fetherston tries to capture the earth and elements from the album's theme, stating "We took off one morning to go capture random sweeping scenes. Rivers and valleys, trees and ponds... in a word, nature. I guess the album has that feel as opposed to the earliest Crystal Stilts material, which could refer to the cities, the subways, thoughts and frustrations that are kept inside oneself. This song is perhaps about doing grandiose things, but knowing it's not in you. The long sweeping shots of the Hudson Valley, and elsewhere at least somewhat resemble the scale of those claims."
'Naturally', with the new Nature Noir record, the band is currently on tour:

The Black Crowes first came into fame with their rocking version of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle". I don't think they have ever achieved such success, at least from what I remember. …
North Mississippi Allstars are playing Cabooze this Friday, September 27th, in support of their new seventh studio record, World Boogie Is Coming (out now).
When asked about the album's name, Cody Dickinson said, "'World boogie is coming' was my father's favorite valediction. Naming this record after his closing phrase seemed like a great way to honor him and his memory. World boogie is coming is also a rallying cry. And the cry is this: It's time to boogie!"
NPR described these brothers (Luther and Cody Dickinson) as "Americana music luminaries", so if you're into dancing (and apparently boogying), then you should make it out to one of their shows.

Speaking of music: Nashville rockers Those Darlins closed the days’ festivities, brightening up an overcast day with a set of their swaggering tunes. The band were fairly tame at first, churning out the songs with little interaction .…

Chelsea Wolfe's third album Pain is Beauty, is coming out on Sargent House this year. The album is a love letter to nature, as Wolfe described the album as, "an exploration of ancestry, how the mythology. …
Chelsea Wolfe, in all her glory and doom, performed at The Cedar Cultural Center on Monday September 22. She is touring in support of her very recently released album Pain is Beauty, her fourth official release. This was my third time seeing her live and it was definitely her best show yet, between the well-crafted stage setup and lighting, carefully thought out setlist (and consequent execution of) and Wolfe's stage presence.
In keeping with suspense and all things intense, her show started out with a fog machine piping smoke onto an empty stage, all while orchestral music played awaiting her arrival. Her backing band took the sparsely set-up stage and added little bits of musical flair on top of the orchestral music. Chelsea Wolfe eventually emerged, clad in a white flowing cape, and began with the first track off Pain is Beauty, titled "Feral Love". With its creepy and foreboding tone, it was the perfect beginning to a magnificent evening. Drums built up slowly to eventually start the next song, also consequently the second track off Pain is Beauty, "We Hit a Wall". Chelsea picked up her guitar for the first time of the night and began straight away with the repetitive but alluring guitar lick accompanying the melancholy song throughout. The song maintained its intensity and started off the track "Mer" right, with Wolfe gracefully playing guitar while singing. The keyboardist certainly added quite a bit of depth to the song with his parts, as well.
Some of my other favorites from the night included "Tracks/Tall Bodies" (from 2011's Apokalypsis), "House of Metal", "Demons" and "Sick". Wolfe maintained the audience's attention for the duration of the night and even carried a zen-like stage presence, despite the melancholy every one of her songs seem to ooze. Other than a "thank you" here or there in between songs, Wolfe didn't bother with talking too much, as she knew what the show goers were there for. She did thank everyone for supporting her new album Pain is Beauty and played a set mostly comprised of songs from the album.
She played two from Apokalypsis, "Demons" and "Pale on Pale", before her backing band left the stage after a raucous ending to the latter, and left Wolfe on stage along to perform an acoustic track. The ending track to Pain is Beauty, "Lone" was performed to complete silence from the crowd. Everyone was seemingly spellbound by the beauty of the song and her angelic voice; a perfect contrast to the heavier sounds of the evening. At the song's end, she left the stage and ended her set. However, with prodding from the crowd for just a little bit more, the entire band came back on stage and ended with a cover song, British punk band Rudimentary Peni's "Echo". Sounding nothing like the original, yet marking it with her familiar doom-y brand of style, it was a great ending to the evening.
Catch Chelsea Wolfe on the rest of her tour on the west coast of the United States and then Europe this fall.

Legendary rock band Metallica is teaming up with Vans to produce four unique shoes, designed by each band members. The shoes hits store this month (February). You can buy direct at vans.com. .…
I just saw the preview for Metallica: Through The Never, a concert film starring Metallica, written and directed by Nimród Antal.
What Antal tried to do with Metallica: Through The Never is to show us a concert film in an exciting experience - by introducing story elements into the concert footage. It is interesting to follow the skateboard kid (we don't actually hear his name mentioned) as he goes across the city, across the underworld, to find this bag to bring back to Metallica. Storywise, it didn't make a whole lot of sense, although I did appreciate that Antal is trying something new in the typical concert film.
As for the live concert, Metallica never looked better in 3-D and in IMAX. The sound was also really good, I would imagine the soundtrack, which is released today (September 24th) via Blackened Recordings, would contain the mastered audio (and not movie dialogue/edited into their live concert). The 2-disc release will also feature additional songs not used in the movie, so you'll get to hear the soundboard recording of their two shows from Rexall Place in Edmonton and Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
If you love Metallica, you definitely need to catch Metallica: Through The Never, which is hitting theaters this Friday, September 27th, in over 300 IMAX 3D Theatres across North America. Metallica: Through The Never (Music from the Motion Picture) is available now.
Hunter Valentine came on pretty late to a room full of mostly women couples. It's obvious to me that the newfound audience was from Showtime's "The Real L Word" - and possibly because last night was also "National Coming Out Day." .…
The last time we saw Hunter Valentine in Minneapolis, the band was riding high as being regular cast members on The Real L Word on the Showtime. The show undoubtedly brought the band to a national level, so their show was had a great turnout.
Since 2012, the Canadian band's bassist Veronica Sanchez left the band and is now replaced by Leanne Bowes (who joined the band in early 2013).
The band is currently on the road with Girl in a Coma (a band we like), Krissy Krissy, and 80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper!

These Texan girls know something about heatwaves… Last week the band unveiled their cover of the Martha and the Vadellas classic song, although the name .…
Speaking of Girl in a Coma, the last time we heard from these San Antonio girls was their cover of Martha and the Vadellas' "Heatwave" was used in JC Penney's national ad campaign. Since then, the band's been on constantly tour, including opening up for the legendary Iggy Pop and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Did I mention that they were constantly on tour? It's true, the trio is still on tour in support of their album Exits & All The Rest (winning the 2012 Independent Music Award for Best Indie/Alt Album) with Hunter Valentine and Krissy Krissy. I don't know if Hunter Valentine will actually be at the Minneapolis show (09/30), but we'll find out next week.

I was looking forward to see ZZ Ward at the sold-out Varsity Theater earlier this year, but unfortunately, due to miscommunication, this never happened. .…
It's been a great year for ZZ Ward, having sold-out many of her shows throughout the country. The last time we saw her, it was at The Basilica Block Party, where she played tracks from her soulful debut album Til The Casket Drops, plus a cover of Son House's "Grinnin' In Your Face".
I suspect the set will be similar this time around, as she return to the Twin Cities at Skyway Theater on October 12th as part of her so-called "Down and Dirty Shine Tour":

As expected, Austra played songs like "What We Done?" and "Forgive Me", from their latest Domino/Paper Bag album Olympia which came out earlier this Summer. .…
Austra stopped by One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans last week (09/15/13) as part of their tour for Olympia.
Opener Diana is another female led electro pop group with a classic 80's action movie soundtrack. You know motorcycle over the sunset romance comedy action? They opened and played a killer set from their debut record Perpetual Surrender, which came out August 20th on Jagjaguwar. I was dancing and felt like I was at a rad trippy dance disco party. I would classify some of their sounds as chillwave. I wasn't a fan of the slow mellow songs during their set like "Curtains" and "Perpetual Surrender", but all an all, I really like this band and hope to see them again soon!
Who knows Austra? Well you should know by now. She's a darker version of Florence and the Machine and she is touring all over the country. I was fortune to see her as she ran down about half the songs of her phenomenal sophomore release Olympia. I love "Annie" and "Hurt Me Now" (which she ended as an encore).

Who needs some Love Language? You can currently stream their new record Ruby Red on spotify. These indie rockers from North Carolina put on a show! I caught them three years ago at the Circle Bar in New Orleans. …
The Love Language just finished their tour for Ruby Red (out now on Merge Records), making a stop at Gasa Gasa in New Orleans.
JULIE ODELL
Opening up the show was Julie Odell, one of the best local artists. Julie blends a solo acoustic guitar and keyboard to mold together her music. She borrowed a keyboard from the headliner Love Language to help her play her set. I prefer her tunes on keys, but every song does the job for me. Her lyrics and vocals are refreshing to hear every time I see her live. At some point in the future, I can see her assembling a band together again like her old band Giant Cloud.
Headliner was The Love Language. This was another great set for the Carolina rockers! Running down all the songs from their latest release, Ruby Red. But all the new songs sounded great, but my favorites are still their oldies like "Lalita", "Heart to Tell", and "Nocturne". The band played all my requests and were a class act as usual. I loved dancing the night away, so be sure to catch them on tour!
The Love Language remind me a lot of another great indie band Family of the Year. Listen to their new release Ruby Red on Spotify. I recommend tracks like "Hi Life" and "Pilot Light."
