Julia Holter is currently on tour for her latest album Loud City Songs from Domino Records. She stopped in for a late, late session at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, September 20th.
Holter's show was unconventionally late, because most of the Cedar is all-ages show, so many of their shows ends at 10pm or 10:30pm. Apparently there was a double-booking last night and Väsen played earlier at 7pm, pushing Julia Holter and Nedelle Torrisi's show to 10pm.
You can tell that Holter love those old orchestra/big band/jazz sound from an earlier era, as she produced that type of genre with her band, consisting of saxophone, cello, violin, keyboard, and drums. Although the music was fantastic, I only hope that Holter can take it to the next level and sing to a Benny Goodman-esq big band of 20 or more players.
The set was basically every song from Loud City Songs, which sounded really good live, in particular "In The Green Wild". When played live, "In The Green Wild" is paced a little faster than its original studio recording, which you can hear on Domino.
Rounding out the rest of her set were songs from her 2012 album Ekstasis, including "Marienbad" and the encore medley.
If you love the chamber music of Loud City Songs, you definitely need to see Julia Holter on this current tour.
