Modern day troubadour and activist Billy Bragg is well known in the music world for his passionate topical songwriting. In the vein of late heroes and colleagues like Woody Guthrie and Joe Strummer, Bragg used his electric guitar as a weapon against injustice. But anyone familiar with such classic albums as 1986’s Talking With the Taxman About Poetry and 1988’s Workers Playtime knows that Bragg also has a talent for crafting tender love songs. The new millenium has seen several new releases from Bragg; solo cuts like 2008’s Mr. Love and Justice and 2011’s Fight Songs, 2002’s England, Half English with his band the Blokes and two more Mermaid Avenue albums with Wilco. In March, Bragg released his 15th studio album titled Tooth & Nail, a collection of rootsy tunes that were all recorded live, without overdubs. Bragg
has toured around the UK and is now in the states in support of the album.
Seeing Bragg live is certainly a must for any music fan. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind performer! I saw him at the Fine Line in 2006 and was delighted at Bragg’s warm, engaging stage presence, his humor and his great storytelling. He’ll be playing in Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center on September 26th.
