Read More Comedy I like Chris Hardwick. I've been following his career on and off since his G4TV days, which probably wasn't that long ago. A few years ago, he started the very successful Nerdist Podcast…

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you'll remember Rick Moranis from such movies like Ghostbusters, Spaceballs and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movies. However, if you try and recall what films he's in currently, you'll have a hard time because he took a break from acting since his last "Honey" film, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, in 1997. Family came first for Moranis, who found it difficult to raise his children as a single parent, so he took a break from acting and found that he "really didn't miss it."
Outside of being a comedian and actor, Moranis is also a recording artist, having released music since his SCTV days. Listening to his latest recording, My Mother's Brisket and Other Love Songs, Moranis is a natural at singing.
My Mother's Brisket and Other Love Songs is a love letter to all-things Jewish, family, and food. There's also this underlying theme of traditional vs modern, for instance, my favorite lines "You're Digital and I'm still Beta" (from "I'm Old Enough To Be Your Zaide") and all the lyrics to "Live Blogging The Himel Family Bris" (lyrics such as "I'm aggregating permalinks and tagging what I can" suggests that Moranis sure knows his digital stuff).
Musically, I think most of these songs are based on traditional songs, from Klezmer to cha-cha-cha to calypso to jazz to even Christmas. The weirdest genre on this album is "Asian Confusion", which is set to a traditional Chinese song. It made sense since the song is about a couple of Jewish couple who ate non-kosher Chinese food once a week.
Even if you don't know your traditional Jewish music or Yiddish language, I think you'll get the gist of it through the context of the song.
My Mother's Brisket and Other Love Songs is out now on Warner Bros. Records. If you order the CD directly rickmoranis.com, you will get a purple velvet yarmulke.
