The legendary Ryan is back on W♥M Radio! We recorded a special "tech-talk" section, but I will have to save it for a future non-music podcast. .…
Cristina makes her annual W♥M Radio appearance!
Empire of the Sun
The Australian duo is currently on tour in America in support of their latest album Ice On The Dune, which Cristina thinks is too pop and did not like it. Vu still hasn't heard it, but will experience those new songs live when he sees them in Minneapolis on September 16th at the State Theatre.
Depeche Mode/Justice/Afrika Bambaataa
Expensive concert tickets. If Vu is lucky, he's getting one ticket to see Depeche Mode tomorrow (August 27th). Cristina, on the other hand spent $50 to see DJ duos Justice. On the opposite pricing ($0), she randomly saw Afrika Bambaataa for free.
Morrissey Morrissey is on Vu's death-watch, however, Cristina offered a brighter perspective on the last tour cancellation.
While we wait to hear more touring announcements from Morrissey, Specticast is releasing Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High in theaters this week (August 29th) as a live event movie.
Check with your local theater listing for dates and times.
Peelander-Z Peelander-Z lost Peelander-Red last year, so Cristina talked about the final Red show.
Peelander-Z is back with Purple who played on their eight studio album called Metalander-Z, this time inspired by 80s "metal" bands like Cinderella, Def Leopard, AC/DC and Motley Cru, etc.
Metalander-Z comes out September 10th, via Chicken Ranch Records… just in time for their September tour:

Howard Jones/The Fixx/Greg Kihn Band
Some random 80s heroes. We love all three of Howard Jones' hits, "What is Love?" and "the two other ones". The Fixx is back with their classic lineup, releasing a 10th studio album called Beautiful Friction in 2012.
Speaking of 80s, The Greg Kihn Band had two big hits ("The Breakup Song" and "Jeopardy"), which you can probably hear live at one of their show. Oddly enough, he is releasing a novel called Rubber Soul, which is an imagined mystery story about the Beatles. Who said they don't write them like that anymore? The book comes out September 3rd.
Catch Greg Kihn at these "kihncerts":

Bonus: Norman Reedus and the Walking Dead, The Bridge (U.S. version), The Baby (1973 Horror movie), IAMX's inability to walk straight, Vu's confusing Cult/Church moment, and Asia Argento's naked ambition.

No More Can You Be Here is the second album from Melbourne band, The Tealeaves. Although, not familiar with their first album, it's reported that this album is noticably different to their first, self-titled album, but not in a bad way. Since releasing their first album three years ago, the band have been touring extensively, writing and recording this new album.
Each of the ten tracks on No More Can You Be Here are brilliantly written songs. With soothing melodies accompanied by beautiful harmonies. The songs are generally quiet and reserved, but have multiple layers, which give it a full and warm texture. They are also multi-faceted; drifting seemlessly from one feel to another, but they're not too long, so perfect for those of us with tiny tiny attention spans.
Feeling stressed? Put this album on and you wont be for long (if pain persists, see your doctor).
If you're a fan of greats such as Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens and Simon & Garfunkel, then you'll most definitely enjoy this album and probably enjoy The Tealeaves even more live. It's some of the most enjoyable indie/folk I've heard in a very long time.
No More Can You Be Here is due for release this coming September. So keep your eyes and ears out for this excellent album.
I'll admit that I was a massive Morrissey/the Smiths fan. I have all of his singles and albums pre-2010. A few years ago, Morrissey basically went crazy and declared war on …
I've just seen the screener for Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High, the first authorized Morrissey film since Who Put the 'M' in Manchester, released in 2005.* The film is set to premiere at selective theaters on August 29th, 2013.
Prior to the actual concert footage, you're treated to hearing about Morrissey through the words of his fans. I think what the director is trying to convey is that when you attend a Morrissey show: the audience is just a part of the event as Morrissey's performance. The theme is repeated during the show, especially near the end, where Morrissey would let some of the audience speak their mind.
The other odd thing you'll notice is the choice of venue, Hollywood High school. You don't normally see an artist such as Morrissey playing at a smaller-sized venue, especially in a school auditorium. Just to give you an idea, Morrissey rocked the Staples Center, which had a capacity ten times the size of Hollywood High.
Anyway, he started his set appropriately with "Alma Matters", but unfortunately did not do any of his other school songs ("Headmaster's Ritual", "The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils"). Instead, the set list showcased some of Morrissey's best work, from his recent song ("I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris") to early solo material ("Everyday Is Like Sunday") to Smiths classics ("Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want"). The biggest reaction from the crowd are for his early work, which is not surprisingly, especially for the encore where you can clearly see that fans were killing themselves trying to get on stage or touch Morrissey.
Although I love hearing "Speedway" live (especially after hearing Julia - I think the same from Morrissey's official magazine "True to You" - thanking Morrissey), I would have to say that the highlight of this show was
"Meat Is Murder". This is the pro-vegetarian song that is probably responsible for converting many fans to a non-meat lifestyle. The reason why this performance is so good is the look in Morrissey's face as he expressed his disgust for the slaughter of animals.
As for the filming, this was a professional shoot, using multiple cameras angles (unlike 1992's Live in Dallas which used two "fan" cameras) and showing the entire concert from start to finish (unlike 1993's Beethoven was Deaf). Truly a worthy successor to Who Put the 'M' in Manchester, Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High attempts to capture what it is like at a typical Morrissey show.
Morrissey 25: Live From Hollywood High will be premiering at selective theaters on August 29th, 2013. To find the closest theater in your area, go to morrissey25live.com and do a location search.
* PS Although fans may recall there is an unreleased Morrissey 2008 live film called Morrissey Live at the Hollywood Bowl which was canceled due to Morrissey's disagreement with the "slapdash release".
For those not living in Minneapolis, the Varsity Theater is possibly my favorite music venue because of its beautiful setup, amazing lights, and friendly staff. My only complaint is that concerts aren't held on the weekend (that's because the weekends are usually booked with wedding receptions or private events). So below are some upcoming Varsity Theater shows:
Playing the last of three Sunday residencies in May at the Palace Theatre, Charlie Fink and company went out with a bang by bringing out the famous voice of Anna Calvi to the stage …
Did you see our review of Noah And The Whale in London earlier this year? That show looked fancy, it was accompanied with a short "Heart of Nowhere" film, which I don't know if the band will be displaying that film on their upcoming tour in the U.S.
Anyway, the band is returning to the U.S. in support of their latest album Heart of Nowhere, out in states on September 24th via Caroline Records.

This isn't an live album release, who knows, maybe one day it will be packaged as such… but Axs.tv is broadcasting Yellowcard concert live at The Paramount Theater in New York on January 12th (this Saturday).…
It's been ten years since Yellowcard's best known album Ocean Avenue was released, and to honor the occasion, the band is releasing Ocean Avenue Acoustic. In their own words, "We hope that we did justice to the original songs which brought so many of us together. We hope you are somewhere with the windows down screaming your lungs out as you sing along to these new renditions. Thanks for carrying us through the last decade of our lives. Here's to a decade more."

The retro-soul sounds of Ugandan-born Englishman Michael Kiwanuka performing at the afterparty in First Avenue’s Mainroom proved to be the perfect nightcap to a music-filled Saturday in Minneapolis. …
Communion is a club night, formed in London in 2006 by musicians Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons), Kevin Jones (Bear’s Den), and producer Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Travis, Beautiful South). Apparently this is no long stationary - as they are taking the club throughout various cities in the month of October. This new 2013 show will feature Rubblebucket, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Willy Mason, 4 On the Floor, Australian duo Yacht Club DJs and lots more. Just to give you an idea, bands like Michael Kiwanuka, Daughter, Gotye, and Ben Howard, have all emerged from Communion, so it's definitely worth watching these upcoming bands.
What's cool is that students and radio patrons will be given a discount on tickets… more details on their website.

Little Comets, the trio from the U.K. are back with a second album Life Is Elsewhere (out now in their country, U.S. will have to wait a bit).
.…
The stage at Minneapolis’ 7th Street Entry (the 250-capacity room attached to First Avenue) is quite small. In the past, bands that are used to playing larger stages elsewhere have had to sacrifice some of their gear, lighting, and amps to accommodate, as a result.
In the case of Northeast England’s Little Comets, they decided to hang their percussion on a clothesline from the rafters, a first that I’d seen at this venue. Actually, it’s a practice the band has used at other venues, but it was a bit odd to see tambourines and shaker gourds just above their heads during their jangly hour-long set.
The UK band, anchored by brothers Rob and Mickey Coles, were in good spirits despite brief early technical issues (“sounds like the apocalypse is happening” singer Rob remarked), now midway through a short two-week coast-to-coast jaunt on their first proper U.S. tour, supporting the just released stateside “Life is Elsewhere” (Dualtone Records).
Photo of Setlist
The band’s sound is a bit hard to define, which may help explain their departure from Columbia Records after their debut album, 2011’s “In Search of Elusive Little Comets” which wasn’t even released on these shores. The band preferred to do things more DIY, as opposed to record company pressures to do otherwise, which likely resulted in limited promotion outside of the UK, but the wait for US fans is now finally over. The foursome, rounded out by bassist Matt Hall and studio drummer Greenie, deftly blend a Newcastle sound of indie pop ingredients dashed with harmonies and ska/world beat undertones, similar in some ways to Vampire Weekend or The Police, though with more of a kitchen sink approach.
“This song is really difficult to play, so if we look dazed, it’s because we’re concentrating a lot”, singer Coles mentioned as the band stretched out early for ‘A Little Opus’, which transitioned seamlessly into ‘Bayonne’, also from the new record, then was followed by the dark but poignant ‘Violence Out Tonight’. The first album, though not available domestically, wasn’t ignored, with four songs represented in the set including their earliest song, ‘One Night in October’ and the catchy ‘Dancing Song’, which closed along with ‘In Blue Music We Trust’.
Because the band were driving to Denver for a radio appearance and gig the next day(!), the show ended relatively early, with the mostly respectful and full but not-too-full Monday night crowd yelling in vain for an encore. Little Comets is just getting started in the U.S., and proved with this 60 min. set that they’re a band to watch; blazing across the landscape, making us all take notice of what England and the rest of Europe are already aware of regarding this band’s potential.
Little Comets at 7th Street Entry, Minneapolis (08/19/13)
Frankie Rose (the drummer from Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls) will be doing some live dates for her Interstellar album (released in the US on February 21st, UK got the album last week). …
As you can see, we get a lot of emails. So please make sure you use the subject header effectively. I do a search by subject header going back to July and here are all the bands with a 'wild' side:
You remember Frankie Rose, right? We like her. After paying her dues in all these bands we like: Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls, Rose finally decided to go solo (or at least under the "Frankie Rose and the Outs" moniker, before opting to just simply go under her regular name.)
Anyway, following Frankie Rose's performance at Pitchfork, she announced that she recently signed to Fat Possum Records with a brand new record called Herein Wild "in the works". The pending release date is September 24th.
Can't wait that long to hear the new album? Good news, Rose recently shared "Sorrow", the first track from the forthcoming album on Souncloud.
Her next live date will be with Tamaryn at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on 09/23/13.
We've mentioned Wild Belle before. The Chicago sibling duo (Natalie and Elliot Bergman) announced that they are doing a headlining tour this year. They previously supported a ton of established bands like Passion Pit and Toro y Moi.
You can keep up with the band as they post quick "Postcards from the Road" videos on their youtube.com.

Empire Of The Sun, named after the novel-turned-movie of the same name, is a collaboration between Sleepy Jackson's Luke Steele and Pnau's Nick Littlemore. …
I would have to say that for the Summer of 2008, Empire of the Sun ruled my iPod. In fact, on a road trip to a music festival with a friend, I put on their debut album Walking on a Dream and it made my friend an instant fan.
So, what's happening with Empire of the Sun? Well, the Sydney duo (Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of Pnau) is currently on tour in America! That's good news, because I'm very excited to say that I'm seeing them at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. I can't wait to check out their crazy outfits on stage.
Expect the band to play music from their latest album Ice On The Dune (currently their single "Alive" is #1 on the Billboard Club Hit and #1 HypeMachine artist), but, of course, they'll do the hits from their debut album, including "We Are the People".

It’s been two years since Chicago’s fuzzy dreamsicles Smith-Westerns dropped some teenage kicks on our skulls with their effervescent single “Weekend” and it’s equally energetic album Dye It Blonde. …
Chicago indie band Smith-Westerns broke through the humidity Tuesday evening with a short and sweet set at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.
The band were rounding out a tour promoting their latest record Soft Will with the Minneapolis show being the final one.
STRANGE NAMES
Opening for the dream-pop quintet were local band Strange Names who brought a satisfying brand of R&B-flavored pop (think 80s staples ABC or Heaven 17) to the stage. Songs like “Strange Revelation” and the bouncing “My Sharona”-like bass of “Minor Times” prove why this band was has been stirring up a lot of buzz lately.
Smith-Westerns took to the stage after 10 pm and kicked in to “Fool Proof,” off of Soft Will. The guys played well despite the oppressive heat (lead singer Cullen Omori, who was dressed in an ultra-thin, billowy shirt, looked like he might melt under the stage lights) and end-of-tour fatigue. Affable jams like “Best Friend” and “White Oath” worked well alongside choice cuts from the band’s breakout album 2011’s Dye It Blonde like the spritely “End of the Night,” “Fallen in Love” and a favorite of mine, “Smile.” They also tossed in a track from their first album (2009’s self-titled), a garage-y Ramones-style tune. The sweetly synthed “Varsity” saw Omori’s airy vocals soar and fan-favorite “Weekend” brought the set to a close.
Smith-Westerns will take a four week break before returning on the road on their European tour:

Australian country/blues singer Cash Savage, and her band The Last Drinks, just released their sophomore album The Hypnotiser in early August, via MGM (note: not the movie company).
Tristen Harris, of RRR, described Savage as "Big, bold, honest and full of the kind of heartbreak and vitriol that makes grown men weep, hers is a voice that cannot be described, only experienced."
You can 'experience' it yourself with a the radio edit of the title track "Hypnotiser" at Soundcloud.
