Radiation City is currently on tour in support of Animals In The Median, out now on Tender Loving Empire. The dreampop band stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night as part of their tour.

CRISIS LINE

Opening up was local Crisis Line, a pop/dance band, lead by Drew Herder and Alex Proctor, with soul elements (especially with the two dedicated backup singers). I'm assuming they played "Phones" and other songs from the Phones album, one thing is for sure, they ended their set with "Last Kids".

Radiation City just released their sophomore studio album, Animals In The Median, so as expected, they played songs from the new record, such as "L.A. Beach" (featuring vocals from the drummer) and "Lark". Although, I would confessed, I rather enjoy "I Would Hide" from Cool Nightmare, with its depressing lyrics, "I would die".

Highlight of their set is a cover of the Beatles' "Happiness is a Warm Gun". I didn't recognize it until the obvious title was sung, so they really made the song their own.

Look for Radiation City in your city soon. "Rad" City's latest album, Animals In The Median, is out now.

Portugal. The Man's frontman John Gourley recall working on his seventh album, Evil Friends , as a collaboration with Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). According to Gourley, "I walked into his [Danger Mouse] place, and it wasn't going to happen. He was like, 'Hey, man, just so you know, I don't really want to record a rock band.' And I was a little relieved. We'd done this by ourselves before, and we knew we could do it by ourselves again."

Finally, after a year, Portugal. The Man finished the recording and released it two weeks ago (June 4th) on Atlantic Records. The band also started their tour in support of the album two days ago… They arrive in Minneapolis this Saturday, June 22nd, the same date that W♥M team will also covering Snowden at Sound Gallery and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin at 7th Street.

You know I love Nico Vega, the band is always fun to see live, although I'm sad to see Minneapolis isn't part of their itinerary. This new tour is with Crash Kings. I'm not entirely sure what the tour is in support of, since their Lead to Light album is not released yet… but expect to see their hit single "Beast" and "Lead to Light" (from their EP Fury Oh Fury) on the upcoming album.

Who could forget that amazing cover artwork for all ASIA albums? Their latest album XXX still features artwork by Roger Dean, as will probably their upcoming Valkyrie studio album.

Originally a "supergroup", the line-up obviously changed over the 30+ years as a band, currently you can catch the band with their mostly original line-up: John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer, and Sam Coulson (the youngster who is replacing original guistarist Steve Howe).

I saw Quintron & Miss Pussycat in 2010, and it was one of the most entertaining live shows I've ever attended, mostly thanks to the puppet show. Speaking of which, Miss Pussycat will be making 100 new puppets this summer at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center.

If you didn't know, Quintron (real name Robert Rolston) is an organist who plays a custom Hammond organ/Fender Rhodes synthesizer combo (which looks like the front of a car). Sometime when he goes on tour, he brings his wife Miss Pussycat, who sings backup, plays maracas, and create the puppet shows.

Anyway, Quintron & Miss Pussycat will be heading out on tour with Amsterdam's zZz to support. I looked up the band, apparently zZz is a duo (Björn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel) and they make "dark, danceable rock".

There’s really no doubt left– Fitz and the Tantrums are no longer a secret locally; rather, are firmly established as a party-starting, crowd-inducing good time band that everyone now has their eye on. This was proven with an exclamation point on their latest stint in town, a long sold-out, two-night stand at Minneapolis’ Varsity Theater on Sunday and Monday.

After successfully building an audience with a house-rocking appearance on a frigid night at Bunkers in 2011 (coupled with an in-store at Electric Fetus and promo appearance at Kieran’s Pub), then followed by two consecutive annual Basilica Block Party appearances, the Varsity shows sold out far quicker than any other tour appearances, proving the Twin Cities have embraced their retro-soul/synth dance-pop with both arms.

While the group came across this time as more professional than spontaneous, starting with their opener, ‘Keepin’ Our Eyes Out’, frontman Michael Fitzpatrick and vocalist Noelle Scaggs still managed to charm from the beginning and led the numerous crowd participation parts and call and response. Despite the new album climbing the charts, the audience seemed to still respond more to the previous album’s songs as ‘Breakin' the Chains of Love’, ‘Dear Mr. President’, and 'L.O.V.' drew great reactions.

Scaggs played hypewoman and kept the party mood sustained, especially during her “favorite song that we do”, a cover of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’. Fitzpatrick also commented on the wild swings in temperature we have locally, remembering the sub-zero night at Bunkers, noticing the sun was still bright outside, and recalling how the weather went from sunny, to cold and rainy in minutes on a brief pre-soundcheck walk. New songs were more charged live, especially the stirring ‘6 AM’ and the lead single/title track of their latest, ‘More Than Just a Dream’ (Elektra Records); played as a stretched out version, featuring sharp vocal interplay between Scaggs and Fitzpatrick.

The Tantrums

Musically, the sound was tight, anchored by James King (saxophone, flute, trumpet, harmonica) and ably complemented by Joseph Karnes (bass), Jeremy Ruzumna (keys) and John Wicks (drums/percussion), though the sound mix came across as a little flat, from my right floor position.

The encore of the 80 min. set began with their biggest hit, ‘Moneygrabber’ and as he’s done previous, Fitzgerald directed the crowd mid-song, to get ‘as low as you go’, slowing the tempo with everyone crouching before they exploded into a sweaty, dancing mass of humanity for the song’s finish. And in that moment, everything Fitz and the Tantrums came to Minneapolis/St. Paul to do, was achieved.

When I first saw their name, I thought it was The Jet Age, when, in fact, this is The Jet Age of Tomorrow (also known as The Super 3) from Atlanta, Georgia. The odd thing about the "Super 3" name is that there's actually just two people in the group.

Anyway, The Jet Age of Tomorrow's third album, JellyFish Mentality, was released last month as a free download on oddfuture.com.

Austin's American Sharks recently just signed with The End Records and they've also announced a double massive tour with The Sword & Castle and Clutch and The Sword. Expect to find American Shark's singer/bassist Mike Hardin, drummer Nick Cornetti, and guitarist Will Ellis as they hold up with their stoner* punk fuzz.

* I would like to add also they seem to be heavily influenced by seventies rock and metallic 90s (think Supersuckers and Glenn Danzig).

Look for their album this September.

We previously mentioned the brit-punk band Sharks. Since we last mentioned them, the band released their debut album, Selfhood, in late May, via Rise Records.

Regarding the lyrics, singer James Mattock said, "I wrote most of the lyrics in a room above a morgue in which I lived with my fiancée for about five months. The place was an old Victorian building with no heat, running water, or bathroom. It wasn't even legally residential. A lot of what I was going through around this period is channeled in the lyrics. These are the most intimate and personal songs I've written - thus Selfhood is the most fitting title."

Jamaican Queens

It was a quiet night along First Avenue last night with the Main Room act, Tricky, postponing until October and the headliner for the Seventh Street Entry, Mac DeMarco, canceling. Entry veterans, Minneapolis-based band Aaron and the Sea saw to it that the show went on, though, playing first in a lineup that included Detroit act Jamaican Queens. Considering the eerily quiet streets we were a bit worried we'd find the room empty but there was a terrific showing for a Tuesday night, with a fun mix of fans in the crowd. Aaron and the Sea performed in virtual darkness with lights momentarily lighting the stage now and then, illuminating the smoke-filled stage. They were followed by Jamaican Queens, now touring with their album Wormfood that released this last March. After standing outside in the rain, then heat, mud, and humidity during Rock the Garden at the Walker Art Center, the best prescription to end the night was the musical equivalent of comfort food. The retro-soul sounds of Ugandan-born Englishman Michael Kiwanuka performing at the afterparty in First Avenue’s Mainroom proved to be the perfect nightcap to a music-filled Saturday in Minneapolis.

But, it almost didn’t happen—after a stint touring with Alabama Shakes, Kiwanuka hit the road again, opening in large venues for Mumford and Sons on their tour. But, when Mumford bassist Ted Dwane had to undergo surgery, the rest of the tour was postponed, potentially sending Kiwanuka back to the UK. Gratefully, he chose to keep his show commitment and played a passionate 70 min. set for the faithful that had endured weathering the elements earlier in the day.

Drawing comparisons to Otis Redding and Bill Withers, Kiwanuka manages to bring a style that is his own- humble and natural; a distinctive voice, with smooth grooved songs that show obvious staying power.

Opening with ‘If You’d Dare’, he next segued into ‘Tell Me a Tale’, a spirited song that has received local radio airplay and which got the crowd in his corner going forward. A pleasant take on Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Waterfall’ revealed the singer’s obvious affection for the guitar hero, and he did the song ample justice.

Kiwanuka wisely brought back out local opener Chastity Brown, to duet with him on ‘I’m Getting Ready’, and it proved to be a very effective duet; both voices able to harmonize and conjure the soul needed to make the song soar even farther than Kiwanuka’s solo version, to great applause. ‘Running Through the Alleys’ was a new song performed, proving the songwriting chops we heard on the first album, will continue with his next release.

Bassist Pete Randall, guitarist Miles James, and drummer Graham Godfrey more ably backed the 26-year old who ended his set somewhat soon with the encore, ‘I Need Your Company’, but maybe it was just as well—a day of music that began over 8 hours before, ended comfortably with a UK singer on the rise who tucked us in, sending us ‘Home Again’.
