I've grown to know about Mikal Cronin as bass/vocals for Ty Segall (one of my favorite garage band acts). He has released a few solo albums that are amazing. There is this awesome pocket of talent in the pools of Goner Records, Burger Records, and Merge Records. This revival of simple indie garage rock has gotten me in this obsessive state of record collecting. This band is connected to this band, this band has members from this band, so on and so forth.
I can't get enough of Mikal's band's aesthetic and sound. It's hard to talk about a sound that is familiar, yet new to your ears. Jaded cynical types will say this is a rip off of 60's garage rock, or this sounds like this band. Throw those stupid comparisons out the door and listen. This is plain out good music. Mikal Cronin support comes from another favorite of mine Shannon and The Clams. Shannon and the Clams is like that doo wop punky band that take's 50's styling and rub dirt and oil all over it. Also opening is Is/Is from my backyard in Minneapolis. I love that the garage sound is back, striping down all that made music complicated and is gotten back to its roots. Catch Mikal Cronin and Shannon and the Clams in a town near you, and scoff at people who don't know who they are. Those people just don't know what good music is supposed to sound like.
