As I made clear in my preview for this show, I was very excited to hear how their live show matched up with their recorded songs. I hate to say I was disappointed, but I was, and there were many factors. I'll get into those a bit into the review.
I love fuzzy, lo-fi, shoegaze-y, poppy music. Eternal Summers is all of that. It's a recipe for the formula of music or genres that will almost always grab my attention. They started out their set with three songs in a row that I don't believe are in recorded form yet, and they were quite good. Next song was 'Wonder' off their album that was released last year titled 'Correct Behavior'. It's a very catchy pop/rock song, but this was the first part of the show where I realized things were sounding very off. Either the singer couldn't hear her voice or she was just falling completely flat. Either way it was very distracting, and continued on for the rest of their set. I have a lot of sympathy for bands playing live and vocals being off, as I played in a band where it was nearly impossible for our singer to stay on key live. I understand it's hard to hear your vocals through the monitors when everything else is blaring.
I still watched and listened, trying to maintain a completely neutral view and simply critique/praise the live show for what they were intending. The crowd seemed to be quite into it and were dancing around/enjoying themselves, and that was promising. All in all, I enjoy their recorded songs and think they're onto something wonderful. Perhaps it was an off night for them, and I will forgive them for that. There is always room to improve as a touring band, and sound should be the first goal in that endeavor.
I must note that I caught about half of the set of the opening band Strange Relations. They're a band from Minneapolis consisting of drums, bass and guitar. The drummer sang over her complicated/awesome beats and I was beyond impressed with their sound. I am excited to be able to catch them in the cities again the next time they play. Keep them on your radar.
