Although Throwing Muses formed in 1981, I actually didn't get on the bandwagon until their breakout album, Red Heaven.
I think for the summer of 1992, I must have listened to Throwing Muses' "Firepile" single a million times. There was just something amazing with that guitar hook, those simple lyrics, and, of course, Kristin Hersh's distinctive vocals. Although I love the song, apparently it wasn't important enough to include in 4AD's two-disc compilation Anthology.
Anyway, in the early 90s, if things went according to plan, Throwing Muses were on the verge of mainstream. It didn't quite happen, for some reason, Throwing Muses' other primary member and step-sister Tanya Donelly left Throwing Muses in 1990 to play for the Breeders and then eventually form her own band called Belly (who did enjoy some success with Star). Hersh was also fighting her own battles: diagnosed with bipolar disorder, taking medications, and finding herself pregnant. All this was covered in her memoir called Rat Girl.
After the major label Sire Records dropped Throwing Muses, they tried to continue but eventually the band broke up after their seventh album, Limbo. That wasn't the end, a decade ago; Throwing Muses came back with a self-titled album, featuring the long-awaited return of Tanya Donnelly. I'm not sure of Donnelly's future involvement, but expect Throwing Muses to release a brand new album for 2013.
I was looking over the Minneapolis calendar and noticed that singer Hersh is going to appear live at Icehouse tonight, May 19th. This is a 21+ event.
