The only difference between the first time I saw Black Moth Super Rainbow (back in late 2007) and their show in Minneapolis on Monday, was that this time there were less face masks involved. When I saw them in 2007, they were completely shrouded in mystery, both literally and figuratively. Despite all that, I was hooked on the sound they were producing. I had actually never heard of them at that time; I had gone to see Aesop Rock perform. I was in rare form that night...getting to the show early enough to see an opener I didn't already know about. Immediately after experiencing their live show, I did my best to track down all the music of theirs I could find, becoming obsessed with their release 'Dandelion Gum' in the process.
I arrived to the Fine Line Music Cafe during the middle of The Hood Internet's set. The crowd was already in a frenzy at that point. There's something about the mashing up of popular and not-so-popular songs together that will always be a wildly popular trend in music, whether I like it or not. Immediately following the end of his set, Black Moth Super Rainbow came onstage. Without a word, they started right away with a barrage of crunchy guitar riffs of the song 'Hairspray Heart'. The crowd seemed to completely lose it from the beginning of those riffs until the last note of their encore set. I had a pretty great vantage point from the above balcony, and watched in amusement as people were dancing wildly and yes, even moshing.
They played through most of the album Cobra Juicy, which they were touring in support of. Highlights included 'I Think I'm Evil', 'Windshield Smasher' and the slow jam 'Psychic Love Damage', my personal favorite of theirs from the album. They also managed to work in a few great songs from other albums, including the songs 'Iron Lemonade', 'Tooth Decay', 'Dark Bubbles' and 'Sun Lips'. They ended their set with a two-song encore of 'The Healing Power of Nothing' and 'Forever Heavy'.
The videos projected behind them added to their mystique, as did the ninja mask on the drummer and the hooded sweatshirts both the guitarist and singer wore around their heads the entire set. While the music was performed really well and completely entertained the crowd, a notable observation was that the band had completely zero interaction with their fans while playing. No "hey, we're Black Moth Super Rainbow. Thanks for coming out..." Nothing of the sort. That behavior most likely represents their concept of being completely indifferent to their physical impressions and more to showcasing their unique sounds in a completely straightforward manner. That's not to say that deterred their fans from showing endless enthusiasm; quite the contrary. Their rabid fans only wanted more! In a way it was kind of refreshing, even if in a slightly morbid way, that there was no small talk or anything hampering what people came to see: music being played.
Overall, they came and they conquered their goal. The music sounded awesome and the crowd was captivated beyond mania. They still have several more shows slated until June 1, as shown on the sidebar.
