The Copenhagen four-piece punk band Iceage stopped by Minneapolis' Triple Rock Social Club last night, April 7th, as part of their tour for You're Nothing, out now on Matador Records.
Here's the deal, punk shows are not my thing. I'm too old to be in front with the moshing crowd and I don't really know the Minneapolis punk scene. I assumed all three openers were from here, I know for sure Condominium is local because Megan had seen them before. The other two bands, Ex Nuns and Wild Child were both pretty hardcore. Wild Child was borderline screamo with lots of energy. They may have gone a little overboard by throwing bottle waters and cups into the bar and the audience. The sound guy cut their show early and the band was ejected from the stage. I hate to say this, but I'm on the venue's side on this one. People should not be throwing s*** around, you can really hurt someone.
As for Iceage, I believe this was their second time at the Triple Rock (previously on tour in 2011 for their debut New Brigade). I think they do the same set every night because when they came on stage, they brought and took away their own personal setlist … which looked very weathered and torn.
Singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt looked very emotional - yet with a blank uncaring stare that reminded me of Ian Curtis. Their music wouldn't really fit neatly in a punk genre; they seem to have a little self-loathing to their lyrics and sound. Of course, they played songs from the new record You're Nothing, including "Ecstasy", "Awake", "Coalition", the title track "You're Nothing", and the closer song, "Morals". |
