Caitlin Rose stopped by The Triple Rock Social Club as part of her tour for her latest album, The Stand-In (out now on ATO Records).
The night started off with Martin Devaney with his fiddle player. His music is a bit folky, with a little country. He said that he had new songs "in the can" as he put it, including a song that had lyrics like "what would I do without your whiskey kisses?" Devaney ended his set with "Wise Blood."
Nashville's Andrew Combs was next on the bill. He started his set with solo acoustics, but by the time he started "Part Time Lovers, Full Time Fools", he's joined on stage by the steel guitarist and electric guitarist from Caitlin Rose's backing band. Then the drummer and bassist join on for "Heavy", and by the time "Emily" was played, Caitlin Rose, herself came on stage to do back up singing for "Worried Man".
As expected, Caitlin Rose sang a lot of new songs from The Stand-In, including "No One To Call" and "I Was Cruel". Please refer to the setlist to see the full set. I'll just try to fill in the rest of the details.
Rose had a lot of little stories for all her songs. Some of the highlight for me was about how she's afraid of clowns in tank tops ("Only a Clown"), calling old friends randomly at 2am ("Old Numbers"), and getting married in Las Vegas ("Pink Champagne").
"Too Stoned To Cry" was a song by Andrew Combs, and he did the singing with Rose doing backup. The entire band left Rose for the last song, "Sinful Wishing Well".
The encores were switched around, with a cover of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos' "I've Got a Tiger By The Tail" preceding "Shanghai Cigarettes".
There was a second encore, "T-Shirt", was done in a cappella.
Caitlin Rose is currently on tour for her The Stand-In album. If you have a love for country music, definitely check out Rose.
