BRMCʼs new album Specter at the Feast was released last Tuesday, and needless to say itʼs been earning a generous amount of play from yours truly. Bands nowadays just donʼt seem to bring the good olʼ rock and roll like they used to, and this band is a sure shot for consistently giving us floor stomping tunes and, from their ʼ05 success Howl to their last album Beat the Devilʼs Tattoo in 2010. The band consists of Robert Levon Been (bassist, vocals) Peter Hayes (guitar, vocals) and Leah Shapiro (drums, percussion). Who doesnʼt adore a female drummer? I assure you she is one of the best. Robert has said himself “She saved our ass!”, concerning their downfall and eventual demise of their previous drummer Nick Jago.

The Los Angeles based trio (Robert and Peter originally started playing music in San Fran) started Specter after the untimely passing of Robertʼs father and sound engineer for the band in 2010. After a major span of writerʼs block, BRMC started to embark on the journey of turning their recent crisis into a cathartic masterpiece. All of this happened in Dave Grohlʼs home studio, no less. This album has the sense of a spiritual homecoming mixed with hopeful melodies and gut-wrenching lyrics. With the sounds of a gospel choir in ʻSometimes the Lightʼ to anarchy driven angst in ʻTeenage Diseaseʼ, it has the prolific range from depression to rose-colored resurrection. My favorite track ʻSell Itʼ is reminiscent of the punching the wall, cinematic brilliance of Howl.

These guys have managed to stay pretty underground even with the release of six albums in a twelve year span. I believe the reason they havenʼt sold out is their coolness and sincerity rises above being lumped into the early ʼ00ʼs rock revival groups such as Oasis and The Strokes. This album especially, each one seems to be braver and more heartbreakingly fantastic than the last. So sit back, put on this luminous album and take a ride with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

BRMC are currently touring in the UK, and will start their US tour in April.

The Screaming Eagle of Soul Lands in Minneapolis May 7th!!!

Brooklyn-native funk/soul singer Charles Bradley has been making quite a name for himself these days. Having spent the last twenty years performing as a James Brown impersonator called “Black Velvet,” Bradley was discovered by Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth. Several jam sessions with fellow Daptone labelmates The Sugarman 3 led to Bradley’s first full length record 2011’s gritty, but hopeful No Time For Dreaming. The album is packed full of emotionally-charged tales straight from Bradley’s difficult life, but you don’t need to know the lyrics to understand the pain; Bradley’s powerfully raw vocals shoot straight to the heart. His singing in “Heartache and Pain,” a song he wrote about the murder of his brother, brought me to tears the first time I heard it - it was so intense. His talented band The Menahan Street Band have provided a wonderful groove-worthy soundtrack to Bradley’s sometimes dark, sometimes tender portraits of American life.

Currently, Bradley is out on the road promoting his second record Victim of Love which drops April 2nd. He will be making a stop at the Cedar Cultural Center May 7th and it will be a damn shame if you miss this show! It should be some kind of national holiday! This is sure to be one of the best shows of the year.

THE EAGLES eaglesband.com Capitol Records will be releasing the DVD/Blu-ray to History of the Eagles on Tuesday, April 30th, 2013. The documentary is on three discs: History of the Eagles Part One and History of the Eagles Part Two, and Eagles Live At The Capital Centre - March 1977 (featuring never-before-released performances from the Eagles' two-night stand at Washington, D.C.'s Capital Center during the Hotel California tour). Fans are encourage to check out the limited "Super Deluxe Box Set", which comes with three Blu-ray discs, a 40-page casebound photo book, 10 archival-quality photographs of the band, and a specially created lithograph of the band's desert-bleached skull icon.

LAURA MARLING lauramarling.com We covered BRIT-Award winner Laura Marling on a few of her "Working Holiday Tour" and noted five new songs on her setlist. Guess what? Some of those songs ("I Was an Eagle", "Master Hunter", "Once") will be making it on a new studio, Once I Was An Eagle. The album is coming out May 28th, 2013, on Ribbon Music. SAID THE WHALE

         The three band bill began the evening with Vancouver five-piece Said the Whale, who brought their Pacific Northwest song stylings as a nice appetizer for the two other bands to come. The band was very grateful to be on tour with Stars, and certainly grateful that their dedicated fans showed up early to see them.

They started off their brief set with some songs I didn't recognize, but still enjoyed the amusing song with the "don't tell my mother" lyrics… but as expected, they did some songs from their latest Little Mountains, such as "Big Sky, MT" (about co-singer Ben Worcester's grandfather) and "The Light Is You", however, I thought it was great that they played "Love Is Art/Sleep Through Fire" which is from a compilation album called Catherine North Demos.

MILO GREENE

         Milo Greene, a Los Angeles-based cinematic pop quintet with four lead singers, took the stage next to a very warm welcome. Kicking off with "Cutty Love" and followed by "Silent Way", the band played a solid set of rising melody songs that had the crowd moving and smiling.

         Perfectly suited to soundtracks or cruising top down the Pacific Coast Highway, the quintet named for their fictitious booking agent, thanked the crowd for the strong reception they've received every time they've played in town, and capped their set with the single that is everywhere, "1957".

         After a brief intermission, the stage screen rose to the sounds of Aretha Franklin's 'Who's Zoomin' Who" and each member of the Montreal indie-pop band Stars danced their way into position, surrounded on stage corners by large glittering disco balls.

         Leaning heavily on songs from their sixth and most recent album, The North, they opened with the uptempo 'Theory of Relativity', featuring the distinctive male/female interplay vocals of Amy Millan and Tor Campbell driving the song, immediately engaging the audience.

         Before the title track, 'The North' was played, Campbell referred to it as a 'good Minnesota song' and his MN roots were further defined when he let the audience know that his parents first met when both worked together at the nearby Guthrie Theater. 'Backlines' and 'We Don't Want Your Body' turned the beat up and invited dancing, or at least shuffling in place, as the full floor didn't leave much elbow room for expression.

         Tempo turned downbeat for a purposely depressing 'Personal', prefaced by a very appropriate snippet from Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' 'Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken', for those that were paying attention and knew the band's influences. Millan introduced the new narrative song, 'Wishful' about the loss of virginity in another slower song that kept the crowd listening.

STARS

         As the band went into 'Dead Hearts' from the mixed reviewed 'The Five Ghosts', I realized that Stars are one of those unique bands that can successfully move from playing a sullen, eloquent torch song, to a throbbing disco beat stomper that exudes positivity, the next. They are literally only one chorus tweak away from achieving airplay volume a newer indie-pop band with similar vocals like Of Monsters and Men currently gets (if that's what they want).

         Their 95 min set crescendo'd with a feverish 'Take Me to the Riot', again prefaced by a brief obscure lyric snippet; this time from The Smiths' "Frankly Mr. Shankly", a band they've covered more than once.

tell me how I sleep, tell me how I dream

         Playing to their largest area audience to date, the main set ended with the crashing 'Walls', Campbell pleading "tell me how I sleep, tell me how I dream", as band members left their instruments and stage one by one.

         Before embarking on the three-song encore, Campbell mentioned how his dad would have been happy to hear the gracious reception given by the First Avenue crowd and teased the band might take a request and play a version of 'Call Me Maybe', but instead launched into 'Midnight Coward' and the rousing 'Your Ex-Lover is Dead' culminating in the crowd singing the end verse acapella.

         All but two band members were then seated along the drum kit for their final song, 'The 400'. Tor Campbell emoted every lyric, ending the song with microphone down, using the projective power of his natural voice, to carry those last words across a hushed and awed audience.

         The audio on this evening was both great and challenged - while phasing of drum sounds and guitar squelches into right/left speakers was impressive, both lead vocals seemed a little buried in the mix, at least from my location. Stars is both a veteran band with pristine vocals and sonics, and a band that still remains fresh and changing thirteen years on, and insists you listen at whatever new music they put out next.

Barely a month after releasing their most recent album, KUNST, KMFDM dropped by First Avenue to show us how it's done. Taking the stage after three excellent opening bands, fans of the ultra heavy beat were treated to all of the things they've come to expect from a KMFDM show: Razor sharp distorted guitars mixed perfectly with percolating synth parts; the dual vocal assault of Lucia and Sascha; and of course the ultra heavy beat.

Starting with a rousing take on fan favorite D.I.Y., the band stormed through a collection of 19 songs from their vast discography, five of which came from the excellent new KUNST album. It was a pleasure to see the crowd get as excited for the new songs as they were for the classics. Speaking of classics, the band had William Wilson of opening band, Legion Within, take the Tim Skold vocal part of "Anarchy" which was one of the highlights of the encore.

Opening band Chant deserves special recognition for being incredibly creative and bringing a really cool tribal feel to the proceedings. Definitly worth checking out if you like rhythm heavy industrial style music in the vein of Babyland.

All in all it was an excellent night for KMFDM lovers. The band was tight, the crowd was feeling it, a real treat for the freaks.

KMFDM is wrapping up their North American tour for KUNST, out now on Metropolis Records.

Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad
Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN- March 21, 2013

         The very warm (when will they get ceiling fans to circulate the air?), sold-out Varsity Theater in Minneapolis played host to a powerful Scottish double bill of Frightened Rabbit, touring in support of their new release, Pedestrian Verse, and The Twilight Sad, who recently released an album of remixes from their last album, No One Can Ever Know.

TWILIGHT SAD

         Instead of bringing their known ‘wall of sound’, The Twilight Sad was stripped down for this tour, into a more personal threesome of vocalist James Graham, guitarist Andy MacFarlane, and drummer Mark Devine. This formation of the band really brought the lyrics and essence of each song into the forefront, demanding the audience’s attention to the band bathed in minimal light.

         Beginning with ‘That Summer At Home I Had Become the Invisible Boy’, the band made its way through 8 songs in a solid and well-received 40 min. opening set. ‘Sick’ and their finale ‘Cold Days From the Birdhouse’ were standouts, with Graham declaring he’d join the crowd in drinking, to watch the Frightened Rabbit set, to great applause.

         Frightened Rabbit, a Scottish six piece named for singer Scott Hutchinson’s chronic shyness as a child, had no such fears and hit the ground running, with ‘Holy’, from their newest release, a song that perfectly builds momentum and is an ideal opener. From there, into ‘The Modern Leper’, that started the crowd’s chorus singing for the evening.

         This was followed by a rousing ‘Old Old Fashioned’, which proved their mark in helping define the current Anthem Folk movement, so prevalent on current radio airwaves. Much like Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Rolling Stones did in the 60’s by taking American blues, re-inventing it and giving it back to us with amps turned up, the current crop of UK artists including Frightened Rabbit and Mumford and Sons, have taken Americana folk and roots, amplified and anthem-ized it, and again have the Brits ‘beating us at our own game’.

         Vocalist Scott Hutchinson waxed poetic about his previous trips to Minneapolis between songs- getting stranded in town in snowstorms, drinking across the street at the college bar, and in general how well the Upper Midwest audiences have embraced the band from the very beginning; this proven by the Varsity show being the first sellout of the current tour.

         A feverish ‘Oil Slick’ was followed by a passionate ‘My Backwards Walk’ and the slow building ‘State Hospital’ before the band left the stage, leaving only Hutchinson and his guitar for a heart bleeding ‘Poke’ and ‘Good Arms vs. Bad Arms’, holding the crowd in rapt attention to every lyric sung.

         With the full band back on stage, the big sound returned, closing with a literally blinding ‘Acts of Man’ which ended with a raging avalanche of riffs and flashing strobe lights, winking across the elaborate logo set pieces and backdrop. The three song encore of ‘The Woodpile’, ‘Living in Colour’ and ‘The Loneliness and The Scream’ got the party started up all over again, ending the evening on an emotional high note and an exclamation point as to why Anthem Folk is as popular as it is, particularly when done right by these spirited Scots.

We all love the Smiths, but can a guitarist make it as a solo artist (note: Johnny Marr + Healers tour and album didn't go too well, but I saw them in 2003). The Stokes's Come Down Machine is coming out tomorrow (March 26th). No one's heard the new album yet, but if you're a fan, you'll definitely want to pick up the Best Buy exclusive which comes with a bonus T-Shirt. Shout Out Louds' new album Optica came out last month on Merge Records.

Palma Violets' 180, according to Brody is the "best album so far." Hey, guess what? It just so happens that Palma Violet is doing a North American tour (and they are stopping by Minneapolis!)

The last we heard from Caveman was their debut CoCo Beware in 2011. It's been a few years now, but the band is back with a brand new self-titled album coming out April 2nd on Fat Possum Records.

Caveman just kicked off their national tour last night (March 22nd as of this writing) at the Beauty Bar in Las Vegas. We are covering the band when they arrive at The Troubadour
in Los Angeles.

The Chicago-based pysch/drone band is coming to Minneapolis next Wednesday at the Triple Rock Social Club. What's interesting to note is that they're on tour with Chelsea Light Moving, the new band featuring ex-Sonic Youth Thurston Moore.

Cave is currently on tour in support of Neverendless, out now on Drag City.

The Cave Singers is from Seattle, Washington, featuring former band members from the Smiths-inspired band name called Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Although the band originally signed to my favorite Matador Records, with their current and previous album, they're currently on Jagjaguwar Records. Their latest album, Naomi , was released March 5th.

They are kicking off their national tour next week in support of Naomi .

If it all works out, I am hoping to have their Englewood, Colorado, at the Gothic show covered.

This Brighton-based band is releasing three new songs in support of their new single/EP called Rio (available April 28th). These new songs are the first since their debut album Votive Life, which was released in 2011.

You may remember hearing about Cave Paintings last year, as they tour with Mercury Prize-winners Alt-J and Supergrass' Gaz Coombes.

As for Rio, a CD-release show is scheduled in London for May 10th at Dalston Roof Gardens, although they list that a full UK/European tour will soon follow.

Brain-Cave Festival just announced new lineups: Peelander-Z, Hooray For Earth, Lemonade, Black Cobra, J.Viewz, The Suzan, are among the new additions.

This four-day music festival is taking place in Brooklyn, New York, at Europa and Greenpoint.

The news broke yesterday that My Chemical Romance is no longer a band.

The brief message from their website:

Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We've gotten to go places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We've shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.

The band officially didn't release anything since 2010, however there was supposed to be a new fifth MCR album which was being worked on as of February 2013.

My Jerusalem is from Austin, by the way of New Orleans, not Israel. They formed fairly recently, as of 2009, but got great buzz from SXSW (naturally) and CMJ.

Their new record called Preachers is the follow-up to their debut 2010 album, Gone For Good. Singer/songwriter Jeff Klein commented that the new record is "dark": "So much had changed since Gone For Good. We’d all kind of been through hell and back again in different ways, and this was the natural artistic result of all of that. But I think it’s a beautiful, comforting darkness. It’s real, but not selfish."

I wasn't given a biography on the band, it would seem like they're from England somewhere. From my understanding, and according to Amazon, that My First Tooth's two albums came out February and March of this year. Quite fast releases for both Territories and Love Makes Monsters.

I've been writing about Noah and the Whale since 2008, so you should already be familiar with the Brit-folk group.

The band announced their fourth album, Heart of Nowhere, out May 6th, 2013. Just recently (March 20th), the band played the first single, "There Will Come A Time", on Radio One.

Singer/guitarist Charlie Fink will also be releasing some short film with the new album. This is not a surprise, since he's dabbed in films since The First Days of Spring. The screening of the film of Heart of Nowhere will see its first screening along with the album's release in May.

It was only recently that I found out that Said the Whale was the third act on the Stars and Milo Greene show at First Avenue on March 26th (next Tuesday). It should be noted that Minneapolis will be the last date on Said the Whale's touring with fellow Canadian Stars.

As you know, we love all three bands, as seen on previous articles: Stars, Milo Greene, and Said the Whale.

The last time I saw this Juno Award-winner band at the now-defunct 400 Bar, they were in the progress of writing and showing off new songs. I am predicting they'll be doing those new (and newer) songs next Tuesday, mixing in some songs from their previous record, Little Mountain.

April 1st is known as April Fools' Day... and yes, we are fools for music.

One of the hottest tickets to get is Alt-J at the very sold out show at the Varsity Theater on April 1st. If you weren't lucky/fast enough to secure a ticket for next week's show - you have a second chance this September 7th! That's a long time from now, but the band will appear at a larger venue at First Avenue. Expect to hear them talk about Prince when they play the main room.

Anyway, you may remember how I saw Alt-J at Triple Rock in 2012, and noted that they were the best band in all the Mercury Prize nominees. And as predicted, they took home the prize last November.
