Wednesday, December 12, 2012 brought Sufjan Stevens' sold-out Christmess Sing-A-Long show to Mill City Nights. The stage was set up like a crazy fun game show, complete with a huge "Wheel of Christmas," spun by audience members throughout the show to help decide which popular holiday songs would be sung. With a band and many of the audience members adorned in costumes and holiday attire, giant red balloons volleyed around the concert floor, inflatable unicorns and confetti being shot out into the audience via an on-stage cannon and the melody of voices rising through the air, it was impossible not to smile and have a good time.
Singing both holiday and classic tunes, Sufjan was an amazing, fun, and humble performer, constantly thanking the audience for their participation and leading the party. During a time when the collective stress level of society seems to be especially high, it was nice to just forget about the holiday madness for a while and take pleasure in the simple joy of singing songs with others while being a part of the crazy experience. NOTE: This was the last show the 400 Bar organized for Mill City Nights, right before closing its door. |
