In case you missed it here or here: The Vaccines and San Cisco just kicked off their North American tour last night in Boston (01/29).

The 'Cines/Cisco tour will hit the Triple Rock in Minneapolis on February 9th. Normally I don't go out in the winter to see shows, but this is a bill that I cannot miss. Come say hi to me if you're going to the show too.

San Cisco debut on Triple J in 2011 at #7 for "Awkward" and last year, two San Cisco songs made it to JJJ's 2012 countdown: "Wild Things" (#53) and "Fred Astaire" (#48).

Although their debut self-titled album was released in Australia, I have not heard words yet on an official US release. I suppose you can always import the album, if you fancy.

What's next for San Cisco? Well after The Vaccines tour; expect the band to appear at this year's SXSW in Austin. I know they will have a great time in Austin, I've said this before and I'll say it again: SXSW is the best music festival that I've ever attended. There are imitators, but SXSW is, by far, the best.

The Jealous Sound

Melodic LA indie-rock band The Jealous Sound carries an inspired musical history with it; drummer Bob Penn plays with the CoCo B’s, Michael Richardson plays with Benton Falls, current bassist Jeremy Tappero is a producer and mixer for a wealth of rock bands and lead singer and guitarist Blair Shehan helped form influential emo-rock quartet Knapsack whose final album 1998’s This Conversation is Ending Starting Right Now is as powerful today as it was fifteen years ago. When Knapsack broke up in 2000, Shehan created The Jealous Sound, a band that has continued his former band’s legacy of anthemic, high-energy songs.

After several line-up changes (Richardson replaced original guitarist Pedro Benito, who left the band for a career in television and film and a Spinal Tap-esque drummer cycle) and a long hiatus following the band’s fantastic 2003 debut Kill Them With Kindness that included switching labels and rumors of Shehan quitting the band, the Got Friends EP saw the light of day in 2008. The Jealous Sound released their newest record A Gentle Reminder in January of 2012 to many positive reviews, receiving a mention from several critics of the prestigious 2012 New York Pazz and Jop write-up. The band recorded the album in their friends the Foo Fighter’s Studio 606 with Nate Mendal making an appearance playing bass!

After a short jaunt across the country last year, The Jealous Sound will be embarking on another tour in support of a deluxe version of A Gentle Reminder on Rise Records that, according to the band’s website, “will feature four previously unreleased songs, five new mixes, and a complete remaster.” There will also be a cd and vinyl reissue of Kill Them With Kindness which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The band will pay a visit to the Triple Rock Social Club on February 27th, so grab some comfortable footwear and be prepared to jump around!

SF Sketchfest Presents an Afternoon With Pinky and the Brain

Read More SF Sketchfest What happened after Mystery Science Theater 3000 disappeared from television? In geek communities it never quite went away, but the men behind the robots peanut gallery, Michael Nelson, Kevin Murphy … Animaniacs was an incredible cartoon at an age when I was supposed to be outgrowing cartoons (except for the Simpsons of course, which wasn't for kids). I never imagined that Pinky and the Brain would take on a cult status of their own, or that the twenty first century would mean I'd be ordering Pinky and the Brain cocktails at Brooklyn superhero themed dive bars (Gotham City Lounge, under the M stop at Central) or I would be spending a Sunday afternoon just to see the men behind the voices be absolutely gracious to the kind of geeks who would come out in honor of a twenty year old cartoon.        For those of you who missed the cartoon the first time around, Pinky and the Brain were a pair of genetically engineered lab mice, one sullen and smart and sounding an awful lot like George Orwell known as the Brain, and a lanky hyperactive one with some serious brain damage known as Pinky. Their basic plot was simple, Pinky would ask “Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?" and the Brain would answer "The same thing we do every night, Pinky—try to take over the world!" before diving into some convoluted plot to rule the planet that never went quite right (with one exception in a Christmas episode for those of you who are going to write in to correct me). Some highlights from the SF Sketchfest panel:        Rob Paulsen describes himself as a "singer who became an actor". He treated the audience to I Left My Heart in San Francisco, various snippets of Led Zepplin songs as Pinky and, as the Anamaniac's Wakko Warner, "Yakko's World" and "Variety Speak". He reminisced that the Anamaniacs may have been the last cartoon to have its own 30-40 piece orchestra everyday, and Maurice LaMarche added that there was a special tone that came from using the same soundstage where the classic Chuck Jones cartoons were scored. Paulsen has an extensive career as a voice actor and there is no way I can cover all the characters and commercials he talked about working on. The same for Maurice LaMarche,  even my boyfriend who is a genius at matching cartoon voices to actors was occasionally stunned when he mentioned one that had slipped past him (particularly that LaMarche also voices Kif Kroker on Futurarama, or the most recent voice of Lexus).        Overall like their characters, LaMarche Brain was the quieter of the two, but when at the moderators request he read "Le Big Mac" scene from Pulp Fiction (with much concern for the swearing as there were children in the audience) as the Brain playing Vincent and Pinky as Jules the audience was laughing at why they never thought of how funny that could be. During the open question and answer period, one audience member asked "How would you take over the world now?" LaMarche deadpanned as if the Brain was still concocting plots in his spare time, "Facebook…I wanted to call it Brainbook but Pinky thought that was too obvious." Both men continue to do voice work on a variety of cartoons and commercials you’ll recognize, and Paulsen produces a podcast at robpaulsenlive.com if you would like to hear more songs from his many characters. Muse at Oracle Arena, Oakland (01/28/13)

Did we just not just mention that Muse is currently on tour? The UK trio just played at Oakland's Oracle Arena in California, last night, January 28th. All photos courtesy of Sus. Muse is currently on tour in support of their sixth studio album, The 2nd Law, which was released October 2012 via Warner Bros Records. Expect the band to do most of their songs from the new album. You remember that sweet Welsh child who sold more than 10 million records worldwide, right? That child is now grown up and you were probably wondering what's been happening with her?

The last I heard was that she's doing SXSW this year, which is quite exciting. This is probably in support of her ONE EP last Fall. Guess what? She has TWO coming out March 4th via Alligator Wine. I can only speculate that THREE to FIVE will follow accordingly.

With TWO, we see her working with the Christmasy songs that made her famous. She recently performed "Glitterbombed" on Jonathan Ross, and you can hear the EP version on … fancy that, link they sent me doesn't work. Sorry. Hate the new Soundcloud, by the way.

Three Days Grace is a Canadian rock band, currently on a massive stadium tour with P.O.D. and Shinedown. Just recently (two weeks ago), lead singer Adam Gontier resigned from the band, citing health issues. My Darkest Days singer Matt Walst is stepping in to fill all their live concert requirements.

The band is excited to be on the road: "We can't wait to get back out on the road to play live for our fans; that's the best part of doing what we do."

Three Days Grace, minus Gontier, will be stopping by Minneapolis at the massive Target Center on February 5th, in support of their debut album, Transit of Venus, via RCA Records. The album came out in October, hitting #5 on Billboard Top 200 charts (#1 on the Hard Rock Chart).

Jonathan C's in Trouble

Again, I should let you know that I don't watch Glee, but if you saw last week's show, "Sadie Hawkins", you might have noticed a blatant rip off of Jonathan Coulton's cover version of "Baby Got Back" (which we mentioned in 2007). I've included a side-by-side wave breakdown below of the first minute (see image below) - they match up almost exactly.

I got a chance to finally listen to the Glee version a few days ago, and it's basically a karaoke version of Coulton's arrangement - down to "Oakland booty" intro, the banjo plucking, and "Johnny C's in trouble" lyrics. Understandably Coulton is really upset about this. Fox's representatives won't credit or even acknowledged using Coulton's music or arrangement.

From Coulton's blog:

… [Fox]'s within their legal rights to do this, and that I should be happy for the exposure (even though they do not credit me, and have not even publicly acknowledged that it’s my version – so you know, it’s kind of SECRET exposure). While they appear not to be legally obligated to do any of these things, they did not apologize, offer to credit me, or offer to pay me, and indicated that this was their general policy in regards to covers of covers.

Glee's "Baby Got Back" is currently on iTunes, making money off of Coulton's work. Coulton is turning this around and putting his original 2007 cover back on iTunes under the title "Baby Got Back (In the Style of Glee)." This is a bit of a joke that he's "covering" Glee, when in fact: it's exactly like his version.

All proceeds from now until the end of February to two charities: The VH1 Save the Music Foundation and The It Gets Better Project.

You know who's really happy about all this? Sir Mix-a-Lot.

Rifftrax Presents Night of the Shorts 4: Riffizens on Patrol

What happened after Mystery Science Theater 3000 disappeared from television? In geek communities it never quite went away, but the men behind the robots peanut gallery, Michael Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett went on to found RiffTrax. Expanding the commentary, error shaming and dialog improvements MST3K used on B movies, RiffTrax opened the SF Sketchfest at the Castro Theater with a night of seven short "films" they improved on with various comedy guests.

First up was "Welcome Back Norman", a short about a man who is just having a horrible time trying to leave an airport. If his day couldn't get any worse that it appeared on film, he's lucky he didn't hear the RiffTrax crew's comments on his luggage return etiquette and what he might potentially be carrying in his baggage.

Next, Nelson, Murphy and Corbett were joined by Cole Stratton (Pop My Culture Podcast) and Janet Varney (The Legend of Korra) to verbally abuse one of the strangest exercise videos for children ever made, "Perk! Pop! Sprinkle!" When children are encouraged to exercise by imitating various household objects, there is a also fair amount of humor carried in our nostalgia watching obsolete housewares paired with seventies phys-ed philosophy.

Third, we were joined by Kevin McDonald of Kids in the Hall for a 1976 Encyclopedia Britannica video "Choaking: To Save a Life." Mustached men giving lessons on the Heimlich maneuver while you're sitting the Castro Theater..well, it doesn't get much more gay. 1949's "Cooking Terms", a PSA for young housewives that brought back memories of Amelia Bedelia.

Adam Savage (Mythbusters) joining the commentary on "More Dangerous than Dynamite" a PSA warning women to use professional dry cleaners and not, oh, wash their clothes in gasoline at home and Kristin Schaal (30 Rock, Flight of the Conchords) came out for an analysis of a scary self-esteem film "If Mirrors Could Speak" that she rightfully identified as "I'm a jugglo and I'm proud of it".

Closing the set was a strange educational craft film for kids "At Your Fingertips: Cylnders". THe RiffTrax team was joined by Paul F Tompkins (Best Week Ever) to skewer the crappy proto-upcycling film showing the various ways you can decorate with, well, cylindrical shaped household objects.

Now, part of the fun of MST3K and RIffTrax is the audience is hearing the witty things they wish they could have said to make their friends laugh. Luckily the audience was absent of such hecklers, so if you'd like to recreate this night at home I now present you with a few links to the original shorts to practice your own commentary.

Cloud Cult will be headlining the second of the two sold out Minneapolis show for Minnesota Public Radio 89.3 The Current's 8th Birthday Party on Saturday, January 19th at First Avenue. Joining them on this show is Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner along with Now, Now and The Chalice.

The band is also thrilled to announce that they will be heading out on tour in support of their new album, Love on Earthology Records. As we have previously written about them, all their records are 100% recyclable - even their CD is made up biodegradable material.

If you attend their live shows (at least in the Minneapolis shows), they often have a live artist painting art based on the Cloud Cult performances. These unique pieces are then sold after the show.

Alternative rock group Muse hits the road for their 2013 tour in support of the release of the band’s 6th album, The 2nd Law. Sub Pop is re-issuing six classic The Thermals albums on vinyl (if you're hip to the music scene, you know that vinyl sale is up five million percent since its so-called death by the hands of compact discs) as part of the 10th anniversary of More Parts Per Million - published by Sub Pop in 2003.

Emelia loves them, describing them as "high energy punk (slightly pop) band and they hail from Portland Oregon."

The vinyls are printed on colorful plastics and only available in limited quantity, making it a must-have for Thermals fans.

One of my favorite albums of all time is the Stone Roses' self-titled debut album. It's one of those perfect albums that you can listen to every track and love it.

Eventually the songwriting team of singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire would musically clash and the band broke up in 1996. If you listen to their two albums, you can tell that Second Coming, was basically a Squire album, with the songs were heavy guitar-driven.

When I read that indeed the Stone Roses were reforming in late 2011, it got me really excited. Of course, when they went on tour, there were already trouble on tour - but I suspect (as we all do), that they were doing the tour for the money. I've already mention that even if they do a North American tour (at the time there were no US dates announced), that it would be at stadiums and well above my concert cost threshold.

COACHELLA 2013

Earlier today (01/25), Coachella announced that The Stone Roses and Blur are co-headlining their 2013 show. Instantly, Coachella fans took to Twitter, asking who the Stone Roses are. You might remember when Paul McCartney did a public appearance last year and youths were asking who this old dude was. I'm not surprise that no one knows who the Stone Roses are; after all, no modern radio station plays their music (at least not since 1994, when "Love Spreads" was the sound of the summer.)

If you turn this around and I'll confess to not knowing any of what's popular with radio youth, but the youngsters seems to know all these High School Musical songs (I once bought a Disney karaoke disc for my cousins and had absolutely no idea who any of those singers were.)

I think the more troubling question is: are the Coachella people out of touch? Sure, Britpop fans like me would love to see this Blur/Stone Roses show, but do the regular California youths care about these bands?

PS, I went to the very first Coachella. It was not good times. I saw The Chemical Brothers, Morrissey, and a ton of other smaller (mostly UK) bands.

“I know it’s a school night,” Kelly Hogan joked to a very enthusiastic Turf Club crowd before thanking everyone for coming out to the show. Weeknights plus zero degree weather can really kill the music-watching spirit, but those who braved the elements last night were treated to a spectacular set from Atlanta-native singer and songwriter Hogan and her excellent back-up band of Nora O’Connor, Casey McDonough and drummer Gerald Dowd.

The band is out promoting Hogan’s newest album I Like to Keep Myself In Pain with their current outing playfully titled “Hogan Midwest Frozen Freakout Tour”; after Minneapolis, they’ll head down to Chicago and then swing through Wisconsin for two stops (Milwaukee and Madison.) On route to the Twin Cities, the band experienced some van troubles and came in late enough that they couldn’t rehearse (Hogan thought that an abundant supply of estrogen was perhaps the cause for their traveling troubles). But that didn’t seem to hinder them one bit, as they sounded fantastic with Hogan nearly blowing the roof off the place with that soulful voice.

The sauntering title track to the new album kicked off the show followed by my favorite new song “We Can’t Have Nice Things” and an older one “No, Bobby Don’t” from Because it Feel Good. The jaunty Jon Langford-penned “Haunted” and blissful “Sleeper Awake” kept the mood light and fun, despite the dark nature of most of the songs. Hogan would fill the time in between songs with humorous stories about her music and touring in her languid southern drawl. For instance the uptempo “Sugarbowl” (that featured Hogan on the elusive instrument nose-flute), is about her time as a waitress working in the restaurant of a woman whose motto was “I hate to cook.”

There were two major highlights of an already amazing evening of music; one was surprise guest John Munson, of Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic and the Twilight Hours, hopping on stage to join the band for two songs. I have never seen Mr. Munson in person before and the last time I saw him play music on television, it was with Semisonic on TRL on MTV back in 1997. So when Munson, who is something like 7 feet tall and was dressed in a furry, white/black coat and plaid pants, graced the stage, I was as shocked as I was elated. They did a fast and morbid little ditty about what I think was the Titanic and then killed it with a Trip Shakespeare song “Snow Days,” all the members on stage creating this lovely, warm harmony that made time stop and the planets align for four or five glorious minutes.

The Magnetic Fields songs were definitely the other highlight (and fan favorite); “Plant White Roses” from Hogan’s current and “Papa Was a Rodeo” from Beneath the Country Underdog are both hushed and intimate songs and elicited misty eyes even from the most grizzled fan. Before playing “Papa Was a Rodeo,” Hogan dedicated the song to a fan who was celebrating his birthday and who happened to raise chickens. As the song began, the fan walked to the stage with a bag of fresh eggs for her. “So fresh,” Hogan joked. “they were still in the chicken [earlier today]!”
