Tom Krell or better known as his stage name How To Dress Well stopped by Minneapolis' 7th Street last night in support of his latest album, Total Loss, released September 18th via Acephale.
I may have missed Katy Morley solo, all I know was DJ Pete Gjovik playing mixes before Seyah (a duo between Nicholas Larkins Perez and singer Tess Weinberg) came on stage at nine. She had a variety of guest singers who came and went as needed, including Morley.
They played glitchy urban hip-hop with electronic drone melodies.
Brooklyn's Beacon was a big buzz last night, having talked to a few fans that came out just to see them last night. This beats duo (Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett) just recently signed to Ghostly International, with an EP For Now, released earlier this month.
Although the band admitted that "big, thunderous rap bass is key to [their] music", the songs I heard on their very brief set list (set was no more than 25 minutes) sounded more video gamey (especially with the CG sexy girl dancing over a big fireball projected onto the band).
When How To Dress Well came on stage, 7th Street Entry was packed! If it didn't sell out, it sure felt like it last night. Audience was mostly young women in front.
I am actually not a fan of falsetto, which Tom Krell uses on all his songs. The arrangement seems pretty minimalistic, with his band playing background music to embellish Krell's lyrics (sometime he would just sing a cappella) and images projected onto the band. From his performance, the songs are deeply emotional to Krell.
Near the end of his set, he launched into his danciest song, "& It Was U", which got the audience to groove. He ended his set with "Set It Right", from his new album Total Loss.
