Third time's the charm. This is the third time I've seen the Mynabirds' in Minnesota, they previously appeared twice at 7th Street in 2012. It was the first time the Mynabirds played at the Turf Club in Saint Paul, so they were really excited.
For those new to The Mynabirds, this is basically singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn's project following the split of her previous band Georgie James. You may remember that she was part of Bright Eyes' touring band in 2011, but with the release of their GENERALS album, Burhenn's taken her full band on tour in support of that album.
Even though last night's set was reduced to a 45-minute (which is the standard for an opening slot), it still felt like a full show to me.
They did my favorites, "Wolf Mother" (with the 'fox headgear'), "Radiator Sister", the audience-participation song, "Generals." "Disaster" was dedicated to the speedy recovery from Hurricane Sandy. Please refer to the setlist for a full listing.
Like their previous shows, they try and incorporate some interesting instruments in their songs, like the music sticks, the tiny cymbals, trumpet, etc.
In addition to the month long tour with A.C. Newman, Mynabirds' record label Saddle Creek will also be releasing a limited-edition, colored 7" vinyl of "Body of Work" (the track closed out their set). The release is limited to 1,000 copies and the colors are "random." B-Side is an unreleased song, "In The Mouths of Wolves." Look for the 7" to come out on November 20th.
