When I first moved to Minneapolis, I wanted to see a show at the legendary First Avenue (the exterior was predominately featured in "Purple Rain.") Say what you will about Prince, but he is a one-man advertisement for the Twin Cities.
One of the first shows, was Boredoms at First Avenue on June 20th, 1999. I honestly don't remember who opened up for them, but neither band brought any audience, as I waited in the nearly empty dancefloor.
Thinking back, I didn't even know why I wanted to see the band. I had only heard a few songs from various compilation albums, but I knew Thurston Moore was really into these Japanese guys. And heck, they came all the way from Japan, the least I could do was show up to check them out.
As it were, Boredoms were very strange! This was 1999, it was the first time I've ever seen (or ever will see) a man on stage making bird noises as part of their songs. They had guitars and percussions, but they didn't quite make "normal" music. The lead singer didn't play any instrument, but he danced around and sang very strange Japanese lyrics.
Was I glad I went? Yes, of course. It was a good start, I wish I had taken pictures or kept better record of things. All I have is this ticket stub in my scrapbook to remember them by.
Anyway, although the band hasn't released a studio album since 2004 (for Seadrum: House of Sun), they're still active as live performers. They did a series of annual date shows: 07/07/07, 08/08/08, 09/09/09, and 10/10/10. Notably missing out on 11/11/11, but they did play All Tomorrows Parties, "I'll Be Your Mirror" Festival in Tokyo (which Sally and I talked about).
Boredoms are scheduled to appear at "Shock City" at Pine Brooklyn, Osaka, Japan, on December 23rd, 2013. The "Floating guitar BOrchestra of Boredoms" will feature about fourteen guitarists and six drummers. Can you imagine that? Fourteen guitarists? That sounds amazing.
