Smashing Pumpkins stopped by the Roy Wilkins Auditorium, in St Paul, as part of their Oceania tour. It was also Anberlin's last tour with SP, which you can read all about it here.
The Smashing Pumpkins setup was pretty amazing. They had this gigantic white ball (think Rover from the Prisoner only one hundred time its size and you get the idea) with video and images projected on it. The imagery matched their song, and visually really cool to watch.
As expected, Smashing Pumpkins, minus James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky, played their latest album, Oceania, front to back from start to finish. The crowd was clearly there to hear Smashing Pumpkins do their hits songs, which didn't appear on their set until an hour or two into their set. It wasn't until David Bowie's "Space Oddity" did their set become more enjoyable for me.
It was fairly disappointing because I was waiting for "1979", which never came. Of course, they did their 'rat in a cage' song, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," which the crowd absolutely went nuts over.
I think if you love Oceania, you'll definitely want to get a ticket to hear all the songs live. Unfortunately, if you didn't bother with the new album, then suddenly it's the world's most expensive listening party.
Smashing Pumpkins is currently on tour in support of Oceania.
