Cat Power stopped by Mill City Nights in Minneapolis, last night, October 30th. This show was co-sponsored by The Current 83.9 FM and the 400 Bar.

THE ENTRANCE BAND

The Entrance Band, or as Guy Blakeslee introduced himself, "I am Entrance," opened up the show. I've concluded that he normally has a full band, but with last night's (Milwaukee) last minute replacement for Xray Eyeballs, it was just solo Entrance. I thought I read that his music was "psychedelic rock," but looking at the black attire and dark lyrics ("I want to die without no fear" on "Prayer of Death") it sounds more like depressing goth music to me?

I've seen Cat Power before, many, many years ago at the 400 Bar. Back then, it was just Chan Marshall with her grand piano. She spent most of the time looking down and closing her eyes as she sang her songs. This is fine for the type of slow-moving, introspective music she was playing, but last night was a different story. She had a full band, a movie projection (that synced to the songs they were playing), and was presented as a full "rock" show. I don't know if this worked for Cat Power, I would've been happy if it was just one instrument to accompany her beautiful smoky voice.

It started off well enough, with Bob Dylan's "If You See Her, Tell Her Hello" song to introduce Cat Power, but as they played their second song, "Sun," you can clearly see Marshall is distracted by something. She kept pointing to someone in the audience with a "cut it out" gesture. This went on for a minute before she stopped the song and had a one way conversation with a photographer.

"There ain't no press passes," Marshall muttered, "I'm here for you [referring to the audience], not them [pointing to the photographers]."

There must have been a miscommunication; no one said anything about "no photo policy" for this show. I was on the other side of the stage and didn't see what was going on, but the story I was told later by another photographer was that securities came and had photographers leave their gear behind the front desk or were asked to leave to show.

Outside of photo drama and someone passing out/had a seizure during "Nothing But Time," the rest of the show went on without any problems. I believe the setlist is the same everynight because of the projected movies. Speaking of which, the Mill City Nights' projection is one the best I've seen from all the venues in Minneapolis, image was crisp and bright.

Marshall performed all the songs from the recent Sun album, with the exception of "Real Life." You know how I feel about bands performing new material, it's tough because they want to play the new stuff but fans wants to hear the old stuff. It felt unbalance with 80% of the set were all new songs. Even classics like "The Greatest" had a different take, which you probably you wouldn't have recognized it from the LP version.

The band ended the show with the new single, "Ruin," with no encore.

Cat Power is currently on tour in support of Sun, out now via Matador Records. She recently announced on Instagram that she may cancel her European tour due to bankruptcy and health struggles due to Angioedema. We have nothing but well wishes for her and hope she makes a full recovery.

Only 30 guests were in attendance, and we mingled before Peter's outdoor moonlit concert began in the backyard of the private residence where the event took place. Peter and his band performed selected Bauhaus songs, many songs that span his solo career, and his 1989 album, Deep, in its entirety. The highlight of my evening was hearing Peter's acoustic mash-up of "A Strange Kind of Love" and "Bela Lugosi's Dead." I had an unexpected treat--Peter approached me and asked if he could join me for a light meal of sesame peanut noodles. We sat in a quiet little corner to have a pleasant meal and conversation. I told him that I first saw him perform during the Holy Smoke Tour in 1992. We chatted and joked a bit, and after we finished eating, he introduced me to some of the folks who attended his Las Vegas Miracula event. If you took basic high school Spanish, you can probably guess it stands for "Bull & I", but wouldn't it be more correct to say "Toro y yo"?

Anyway, Toro Y Moi (aka Chazwick Bundick) moved their listening party due to Hurricane Sandy hitting the east coast. The new dates are now listed at at art galleries in Brooklyn Nov. 9-11 and San Francisco on Nov. 16-18. Toro Y Moi's third LP, Anything In Return is due out January 22nd on Carpark Records.

The listening parties are free and open to the public and will feature 13 original drawings from Chaz Bundick. Each paired with a corresponding song from the album that fans can listen to via Incase headphones.

The Ampersands just released This Is Your Adventure Too album today, October 30th. The Ampersands are from New York and Rhode Island and its two main members are Aaron McQuade and Jim Pace. On the record, they had some help from mixer Jamie Hill, drummer Corrine Gonzales, and producer Bryce Goggin. I am assuming when they play live, they have session musicians or friends on drums, etc.

It was a surreal moment watching the legendary Afghan Whigs take to the soft blue-lit stage last night at their sold out show at the Varsity Theater. That much-loved Ohio-bred hard rock band who shook up the grunge club in the early 90s with noirish tales of sex and violence and had a penchant for funk and R&B, was standing before an adoring audience; a colorful collection of older fans who saw them in their heyday and saucer-eyed newbies (like myself) who followed magnetic frontman Greg Dulli from his newer endeavors like Gutter Twins (see: Mark Lanegan) and the Twilight Singers back to his roots. All of them were waiting to be swept off their feet by an always obliging Dulli - and as the band kicked into the first song, the epic “Crime Scene, Pt. 1” and white confetti spilled from the ceiling, it all felt like some wonderful dream you don’t ever want to awaken from.

The band, having returned from a two night stint at the Metro in Chicago, were in top form. Bassist John Curley, who garnered the “silver fox” title according to many female fans, smoked up classics like the urgent “I’m Her Slave” (from 1992’s Congregation) and “My Enemy” from 1996’s Black Love.  Greg Dulli’s voice was perfect (perhaps the result of sobriety and not smoking? Although I do have an affinity for nicotine-coated vocals: again see Mark Lanegan) switching from husky croon to passionate howl.

And, dear reader, if you don’t already know this, the man just oozes charisma; things got especially heated when a hot-and-bothered fan threw her sparkly black scarf at his feet. Dulli, that dark provocateur, just grinned and demanded more clothes. “I want you naked in three songs!” During a dizzying performance of “Gentlemen,” Dulli playfully wrapped the scarf around his head. There was a black box at the edge of the stage on the left that Dulli would leap on to command his mesmerized audience. It made Dulli seem even more larger than life, as he waved his hand about, staring wide-eyed into the crowd. “Testify!” screamed one fan. Dulli upped his antics by daring to wade through the sea of people while singing “See and Don’t See,” The Whigs’ slow-burning cover of Marie Queenie Lyons’ 1970s song. “I know you’re old,” Dulli quipped to folks helping him jump to the floor. He miraculously made it back to the stage (I sort of envisioned some jilted bride dressed in a ragged white dress in the back would swallow him up), but not before having ten million fingers slide through his hair.

The left corner of the stage featured long, cool Rick McCollum, the Whigs’ lead guitarist. McCollum, decked out in fabulous eyewear, would lean his body way back while his fingers danced expertly up and down the neck of that fantastic guitar of his. Later in the show, McCollum became more animated, kicking up his feet and shuffling around, getting right up in the faces of us folks at the front of the stage with tasty riffs from the spectacular “Debonair” to the slide-heavy and rhythmic “Fountain and Fairfax.” (both on 1993’s Gentlemen) It was impossible to stay still during these songs!

Adding to the joyful noise with the three original Whigs were a talented trio: Twilight Singers member Rick Nelson who played keyboards and strings, Gutter Twins member and rhythm guitarist Dave Rosser and Cully Symington, an impressive drummer from bands such as Okkervil River and Cursive.

On top of being an absolutely stunning venue with “mystifying” bathrooms (as excellent opening band Wussy’s Lisa Walker observed), the Varsity has that wonderful lack of barricade that painfully separates rapid fans from the object of their desire: the band. So, to be so very close to such a blistering performance from this band (I could practically reach out and pluck one of Rick McCollum’s guitar strings - Oh, I wanted to! but I didn’t.) is such an overwhelming experience. The line between band and crowd blurred further when Dulli encouraged the audience to join him in singing the gentle “ooo” intro to the heart-wrenchingly gorgeous “Faded” from 1996’s Black Love, the set closer. (“There,” the frontman said. “Now you’re part of the band.”)

The band graced the stage one last time for a one song encore: an explosive, gritty “Miles iz Ded,” a fan favorite from Congregation. This, of course, left the crowd begging for more. Seriously. Fans were screaming for more songs well after the house lights went on and the roadies were dismantling the drum kit. I don’t really blame them. The Afghan Whigs delivered a truly phenomenal show; an incredible dream-come-true for fans. As my friend and I were being politely ushered out of the venue by impatient security and I felt that harsh blast of cold air walking through the alley-side exit, I longed to be back in the hot intensity of those songs.

I don't know who the opening band* is for tomorrow night, previously Brooklyn's Xray Eyeballs was on tour with Cat Power, but they seem to have dropped off last night.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear her new Sun album live. I also hope to hear "Cross Bones Style," which she didn't sing the last time I saw her.

Spin said that Kitten's 17-year-old singer Chloe Chaidez had "raw power and believability as a performer."

The Los Angeles indieband recently premiered "Japanese Eyes" on Nylon Magazine, which Nylon noted: "In the music video for the synth-heavy 'Japanese Eyes,' Chaidez dances in a disco-ready dress like Ronald Reagan was still the president."

Kat Edmonson is currently on tour with Gary Clark Jr., in support of her sophomore album Way Down Low, out now via Spinnerette Records. You may remember this Texan with her 2009's Take To The Sky hitting the top 20 on Billboard's jazz charts. Certainly legends Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett took noticed of her and had her open up their shows. Lovett even asked her to do a duet with him, covering the Christmas classic, "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

I actually had this item for my Halloween music article, but I just realized this has nothing to do with music. This is a book called "Zombie Cat: The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty." The book is written by Isabel Atherton and illustrated by Bethany Straker.

Reading the description, it is about Tiddles, a normal cat that turned into a zombie cat by a radioactive field mouse. Now he craves human brains. Shouldn't he crave cat brains?

This children book was released earlier this month (October 1, 2012), via Skyhorse Publishing. It is available in print and also Kindle Edition, but you know how I feel about digital books.

The Archive – Great Low Down

The members of New York’s The Archive have been at this crazy little thing called rock for a long time, though exactly how long is between the band and their Rock God. However, the four of them claim a musical vita that cites influences as diverse as Paul Westerberg’s intimate brand of American punk to the Southern folk styling of Gillian Welch, and even a little early shoegaze for good measure. Strictly speaking, a band with this many ties to multiple genres does not produce a straightforward interpretation of contemporary rock, and their debut record is proof of something stirring.

Great Low Down opens with “Julia, Dear,” a nod to the band’s punk sensibility, though slightly countered by a soaring melody. There’s an absence of the biting snarl preferred by vintage punkers and their new age protégé; instead, singer John Epperly sounds less disgruntled as he does worn in. Never more so than on “Kid Glove Tangerine,” a very Westerberg-esque self-designated state of weariness (“You took your tongue tearing apart…me”) or the album’s closer, “Black Rain,” that wanders without a destination and feels like the lyrical equivalent of restless legs. Of course, The Archive can bring it on when they want to, and “Holy Ground” boasts a guitar-driven fury that reminds us this is not a band so easily compartmentalized. As a whole, Great Low Down suggests a symbolic clock is ticking and the band—while somewhat disillusioned by the state of things—can’t help but chase the elusive white rabbit, reason be damned.

Diamond Rings and Gold Fields are currently tour mates, they stopped by the 7th Street Entry last night, October 27th.

VAGUE-À-BONDE

Opening up was Vague-a-Bonde, a one-woman producer/songwriter named Nicole Alicia. You may remember the Alicia sisters and Mark Mallman from Waxx Maxx, who I previously wrote about.

Her setup is a Mac with some sort of beat control box that had moving red light indicators. I didn't know her music, but I'm pretty sure she sang "Evolved" and "Voices," both songs can be heard on her Soundcloud.

GOLD FIELDS

As for Gold Fields, it's only been two weeks since we last saw the Australian boys. They were in sunny Los Angeles last night, so it was a cold shock when they landed in Minneapolis. I hate to break this to them, but that wasn't cold what they experienced (wait until January!).

Their brief 30-minute set was pretty much like last time, they did their new single "Dark Again", first single "Treehouse", and their cover of Underworld's "Born Slippy." The set closer was an extra-long rendition of "Moves."

Diamond Rings (John O'Regan) brought a full touring band with him to the 7th Street Entry. They were all dressed in black tank-tops and sported shades and cap. Even though it was Halloween weekend, they still managed to look over the top b-boy styling.

The report I got was Diamond Rings was very engaged with the audience and they played songs off the new album. Their encore was their very first single, "All Yr Songs." Diamond Rings explained that the song was "the one that started it all."

Diamond Ring is currently on tour in support of Free Dimensional, which just came out this week, October 22nd. On tour with them is Gold Fields, in support of their EP, Dark Again. Both releases can be found on Astralwerks Records.

The Envy Corps and Rah Rah at Fine Line Café, Minneapolis (10/27/12)

Last night at the Fine Line Café in Minneapolis was the last Rah Rah/The Envy Corps team-up tour. You can tell by the way the two bands interacted that they got along really well on tour.

The thing that makes the six-piece Canadian band Rah Rah is that they often switch instruments, as well as feature different lead vocals. Most of the time it is a few guitars and a violin, but once in a while, they'll bring out the accordion.

They did some songs from their latest album, The Poet's Dead(which came out this week, October 22 via Hidden Pony Records), like "Dead Men."

Rounding out the brief 30-minute set included "Tentacles" and "Arrows," which members from The Envy Corps joined on stage to help sing the sing. Rah Rah would return the favor when Envy Corps played "Make It Stop."

If you recall, the last time I saw The Envy Corps, it was in their homestate. I noted that they had huge passionate fanbase, and generally impressed with the fans knowing and singing along to all their songs.

Please check with the setlist to see what songs were played. They ended their set with "Party Dress," but to be honest, they could've ended with "Story Problem" because that song had the epic-ness and buildup of backup vocals. Once that song was done, it really felt like they couldn't top it.

The Envy Corps are returning to Iowa and Rah Rah continues on to Seattle, Washington, in support of their album, The Poet's Dead. They also have a random date in Los Angeles at the Bootleg Bar on November 28th.

The Script with Tristan Prettyman just played the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis last night, October 26th.

If you go to enough of these old style historic theater shows, artists goes on stage on time. So if the ticket says 7:30, it starts at 7:30, not one minute earlier or later. I really like that.

Tristan Prettyman started off the show with her live band, Steve Miller and Josh Dunahoo. Listening to her talk about her songs, you realized that her music is basically a biography of her life and experiences.

Songs from her set included new ones from Cedar + Gold (out now via Capitol Records), including "I Was Gonna Marry You", "Never Say Never", and "My Oh My." Now when I think of that last song, "My Oh My", I think of Prettyman eating tacos, because she's "a taco girl."

My absolute favorite is, I believe is called "The Rebound" which is a hidden/bonus track off Cedar + Gold. It's about meeting a guy at Trader Joe's and falling for his bananas. It's pretty funny, I wish you could've heard it when Prettyman sings, "and you were pretty f**** hot," which got a loud cheer from some women in the audience.

The Irish rock band The Script had a three column stadium light, which I felt was underused. Instead the attention is always focused on singer Danny O'Donoghue who spent much of their songs in high energy mode, jumping and singing and pointing his fingers at the audience. He often breaks the stage/audience barrier by going into the aisle and singing to his adoring fans.

Hearing The Script talk about America (and why they're always touring here), I felt that the band generally really, really loves it here.

Highlight of their set was their first single, "We Cry," which was played early in their show, setting a tone that they were going to do hits as well as new songs from their #3 album (which came out earlier this month). The majority of their set was high energy pop/rock songs, with the exception "I'm Yours."

New songs? They were generally well-received, included "Six Degrees of Separation" and "Give the Love Around." The latter is about Karma and what you do will come back to haunt you.

Encore was "Breakeven" and "For The First Time."

The Script and Tristan Prettyman are currently on tour in North America in support of their respective new albums, #3 and Cedar + Gold.

Savoir Adore stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, October 26th.

SUN AIRWAY

Somewhere along the way, they met up with Sun Airway, who previously was enjoying sold out shows with M83. Sun Airway closed out the night with their smoke machine and laser show. For added effects, the lights were turned off, so it's impossible to shoot photographs.

They had a dedicated singer, but he would once in a while push buttons or pick up a guitar. Musically, Sun Airway's songs were designed for the dance floor, and my favorite song they did was called "Symphony in White No 2."

I've previously mentioned that Savoir Adore is made up of two best friends, Paul Hammer and Deidre Muro.

This Brooklyn band sound like dreampop/shoegazing, lots of guitars and effects. The best part is that their songs sounded good live. Sometime a band gets it right with layers and mixes in the studio, but don't exactly pull it off live. Savoir Adore's songs are melodic, and I can easily see why New York Post called them "10 Bands to Watch."

Please check with the setlist to see what songs were performed. As you can see, the majority of their songs were from their Our Nature ("Loveliest Creature", "Regalia", "Sea of Gold", "Speed Bump", "Dreamers"), which was recently released (October 16th). They ended their set with "Dreamers," which was my favorite.

Savoir Adore's final stop will be at the Rathskellar in Madison, Wisconsin, before they head back home in New York. Our Nature is out now on Amazon.
