In the midst of a random southern road trip with my sister, I got the pleasure of catching Beach House at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. I hadn’t seen the duo since 2010 when they toured with Vampire Weekend, so I was ecstatic to see how they had blossomed since their original success of ‘Teen Dream’. In no way did they disappoint. With Victoria Legrand’s haunting, ethereal vocals and Alex Scally’s wicked guitar riffs, this was a show to make any indie-loving fan feel like they were in a blissful trance.
One thing about Beach House that stands out above the rest is their mysterious stage performance. Victoria belts out her exquisite lyrics from under her infamous locks of hair, always keeping the crowd wondering what she will pull out of her hat next. The synthesizers give the overall mood a light and airy feel, with unrequited love and longing being the end result as “Wishes” wrapped up the set before the encore. “Always out of the way/we keep these promises.” A promise, no doubt, that this band will keep bringing us uplifting melodic tunes we can dance to for years to come.
Side Notes: Beach House, with support Dustin Wong, at Tipitina's in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 18th, 2012, was sold out.
Beach House is in the middle of their "Frightened Eyes" 2012 Tour, in support of their latest album, Bloom, out now from Subpop Records.
