Worth Checking Out - Indie ElectroPop Band The Limousines
Trying to define the popular music genres of San Francisco is difficult, if not impossible. Some terms used to describe local bands playing in the Bay Area are psychedelic cave techno, cloud-rap, melodic hardcore, deathgrind and zenith snowflake pop. Now, if you can imagine, add everything else that is in-between.
As one musician put it, the masses of unknown sub-genres of music bands in the Bay Area are too poor to tour the states so they have to remain playing in San Francisco. The sheer quantity of music festivals, concerts and underground band events attests to this California city being one of the top music capitals of the world.
One popular band, The Limousines, consists of only two band members and is considered an Electropop band, or of the genre called American indietronica. Eric Victorino writes lyrics and sings, while Giovanni Giusti plays multiple instruments and produces their work. Typical of today's generation, the two musicians met, by chance, online. First, they exchanged lyrics online. Soon after that, they were sending each other recorded vocals over the Internet.
After meeting in person, Eric and Giovanni became a duo-act in 2007. Several music festivals later, they gained international acclaim with their single, Very Busy People. Additionally, they performed as the opening act for Duran Duran at Mountain Winery. The Limousines' first complete album, Get Sharp, went on sale in 2010 on a lesser-known indie label. However, only five months later, Dangerbird Records signed them on.
The indie music wave seems to coincide with the mainstream use of the Internet for musicians. Everything new is within their reach, including every guitar sale online, as well as video and audio snippets of each other's sound. The musical focus is on diversity, from visual style to the use of a wide variety of instruments. Gone are the 1960s when the younger generation had a narrow vision for its music: garage-rock and Woodstock hippie bands.
Recently, The Limousines went overseas to play in London and do a bit of sightseeing. Their London performance paired them with a dynamic rock group from Sweden, The Sounds. Eric and Giovanni performed songs from their first album, Get Sharp, as well as a few covers.
Noteworthy, was Eric's vocal cover of the Paul Simon song, You Can Call Me Al. Eric and Giovanni were not alone in London because several of their biggest fans from the U.S. followed them on their tour. These American fans sat in the front row to cheer the duo on for a rowdy set.
In conclusion, San Francisco continues to be fertile ground for aspiring music artists, both innovative and homespun. With the beautiful tree-covered hills surrounding the Bay, there is no better backdrop for enjoying an outdoor music festival. Currently, the Limousines have one upcoming concert date in San Francisco: September 23, 2012, they will play at the Folsom Street Fair 2012, along with Little Boots and Ladyhawke.
