Young Magic and Quilt shared headliner duties at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis, last night, July 9th.
Quilt had a bit of a car problem driving up from Chicago, so they turned up a little late (their buddies, Widowspeak, was not so lucky when they failed to appear last month). I only mentioned that incident because I caught the band later and they brought it up, comparing it to their own parallel problems.
Dan saw Quilt at SXSW and he said they played "repetitive dream pop with some 60's organ and twin guitars". I thought they were sometime dreampop and shoegaze. I actually really like that melodic sound, so this was a nice bonus.
They ended their set with "Penobska Oakwalk".
Young Magic was missing a third band member, so it was just the two (Melati Malay and Isaac Emmanuel?). They had a mini-projection movie thing going on, so the lights were turned down. So the little pictures I took basically turned out crap.
They didn't speak much on stage, but when they did, they seem to have this other worldly accents* (for a band that's based out of New York, that seemed strange). Speaking of worldly, the music they played were an interesting blend of World Beat and electronica/experimental. There's a lot going on with the percussion and chain of bells. To give you an idea of how diverse and obscure some of their musical influences are, check out the "mixtape" from Young Magic for Stool Pigeon.
Tracks they played were mostly from their debut album, Melt, including their finale song, "Night In The Ocean".
Young Magic and Quilt are currently finishing up their double headlining tour, check them out if they're coming to your town.
* I am told they are Australians.
