MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS
motown.com
"Heat Wave", also known as "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", was a bona fide 1963 hit for Motown girl-group Martha and the Vandellas. A decade later, the song resurfaced under Linda Ronstadt's platinum-selling 1975 album, Prisoner in Disguise. The song's been covered many times, notably Phil Collins in 2010 for his cover lover album, Going Back (Collin's love for Motown doesn't surprise me, because I bought the Phil Collins soundtrack to "Buster" only to realize they're love letters to the Motown sound.)
One of the significant things about the song is that it was the first song to be recognized as the "Motown Sound", thanks to the consistent hit-maker song writing trio Holland–Dozier–Holland (Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian Holland and Edward Holland, Jr.).
The girl group went on to produce 24 R&B hits, including "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack", and "Dancing in the Street" (which was made even more famous by David Bowie and Mick Jagger in the mid-80s).
Only one other Motown band outshined Martha & The Vandellas, and that was Diana Ross and the Supremes.

GIRL IN A COMA

These Texan girls know something about heatwaves… Last week the band unveiled their cover of the Martha and the Vadellas classic song, although the name is slightly altered to be one word: "Heatwave". The song was chosen by JC Penney for their July national ad campaign.
Girl in a Coma are constantly on tour, but their summer shows in North American kicks off today (July 9th):

WILEY
wileyheatwave.com
Nothing to do with the Motown song, but Wiley has a same-named single, "Heatwave", coming out July 30th of Warner Bros Records (please note the song is not available in the US market). The single features guest vocalist Ms D (who was also featured on Chipmunk's #1 hit song "Oopsy Daisy") as witnessed by his official music video with her constant "put your hands on my body".
For those who aren't familiar with UK's Grime music, Wiley (Richard Cowie), is a British MC and rapper from the Roll Deep collective, who is widely regarded as the man who created Grime music.
