90s indie band Archers of Loaf is celebrating the recent reissue of their back catalog courtesy of Merge Records by taking their earnest, driving rock ‘n roll on the road including a two night stand August 25th and 26th at the Twin Cities’ favorite red-walled love tunnel, the 400 Bar.
If you had an ear to the ground in the early 90s, you heard the rumblings of the blossoming independent rock movement that saw bands like Archers of Loaf and fellow acts like Superchunk and Teenage Fanclub rise to fame, from college radio to MTV. Originating in Chapel Hill, NC, band members Eric Bachmann, Matt Gentling, Eric Johnson and Mark Price spent seven short years delivering their hard, melodic sound to a dedicated, young audience before calling it a day in 1998.
Last year, they reunited on the heels of Merge Records re-releasing the band’s lauded 1993 debut album, Icky Mettle. Self-proclaimed Dean of American Rock Critics, Robert Christgau summed up the album’s youthful noise by saying, “Aurally, this is now--one now, anyway. If it has zero to say about tomorrow, why don't you just worry about that then?”
This will be an exciting, not-to-be-missed show especially by those pining for that sweetly jarring early 90s sound.
