Wintersleep stopped by the 400 Bar last night, June 9th.
I had originally scheduled Megan to review this show because I wasn't sure if I could make it back from Stillwater or have the energy to continue. Instead, we saw the opening band, Sad Sakabones, and then I sent her to cover Royal Headache at Triple Rock Social Club, down the street.
Sad Sakabones is a one-man band. He plays keyboard or guitar, aided by beats from his laptop. April called his music 'chill', which I can't disagree with. I didn't really know any of his songs, although he mentioned one of the song was called "Jaime and Jake".
Wintersleep was more rock than I thought; they were really loud! Their fans all seem really dedicated and involved in the band, which is good because I think the best bands are the ones engaged with their fanbase. Unfortunately, anyone outside of their circle feels a little lost on their inside jokes.
For the fans they seem to want to hear all the old songs, but as you can see from the setlist, they did a lot of new songs ("Hum", "In Came The Flood", "Resuscitate", "Rapture", "Nothing Is Anything (Without You)", "Smoke").
Perhaps it was the audience's reaction, but I felt the "Oblivion"/"Laser Beams" combo was the highlight of their set. They had a really long and loud effects … give it a very epic feel. They ended their set with "Miasmal Smoke & the Yellow Bellied Freaks", clearly they still love doing songs from their "New Group of the Year" winner album, Welcome to the Night Sky.
Wintersleep is currently on tour in America in support of their new album, Hello Hum, which comes out this Tuesday, June 12th via Roll Call Records/ILG.
