The much-hyped London-based shoegaze-tinged sister act 2:54 played the Triple Rock (and Minneapolis) for the first time Monday night.
Support was provided by a local duo, Plastic Believers, who played dancey electronic rock. I only caught the last couple songs of their set “Victims of the Century” and “Your Place or Mine?” They pulled off a fairly polished set (the part of it I actually heard) considering they were filling in at the last minute since Widowspeak, the band originally scheduled to open the show, had to cancel due to their van breaking down on their way from Chicago.
Sisters, Hannah (guitar) and Colette (vocals) Thurlow, bassist Joel Porter and drummer Alex Robins hit the stage and kicked things off with “Circuitry.” The nine song set was mainly comprised of songs off of their self-titled debut album released last month on Fat Possum Records. They threw in a couple songs off their EP, Scarlet, and also played the moody-sounding “On a Wire,” which isn’t found on either release. The band churned out “Creeping” to close out the set.
The crowd was a bit thin, even for a Monday night, and extremely quiet in between songs (seriously, I have never heard less chatter from a crowd in between songs) but after a couple of songs into 2:54’s set, the audience became a bit more responsive after each song finished. At one point, Colette stepped off the stage and danced up to a few guys standing at the front of the main floor in an attempt to evoke a bit more of a response, only to receive some sheepish grins before returning to the stage.
2:54 are in the middle of their first-ever tour of the US. Catch them if your town is lucky enough to be one of the remaining dates.
