It's been a long time, and seeing Cowboy Junkies at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis, it was like seeing an old friend. They sound the same, they look great… and there's a lot of catching up to do.
We're talking four full length albums in 18 months. That's over forty songs! Even singer Margo Timmins had to apologize for the influx of songs. It's tough for the band, because on one hand, they want to play the new songs, but the fans wants to hear the old stuff. So they made a plan: the first half of their set will consists of new material from their Nomad Series (Renmin Park, Demons, Sing in My Meadow, and The Wilderness) while the later set will be hits and old favorites.
As you can see from their setlist, they did two songs from the new release, The Wilderness, including "The Confessions Of Georgie E" and "Damaged From The Start" (which you can hear here). They sounded great, and I can tell you that the first part of their show was a lot mellower than their second part, which started with their first single (and cover of The Velvet Underground's) "Sweet Jane".
The second part of the show was my favorite, they did the old stuff that we love and know, like their second single "Misguided Angel" and 1993's "Crescent Moon".
Near the end of "Working on a Building", Margo left the stage. The band continues to play without her, like an extended jam session. When she came back, she confessed she's been sick the last few days. She apologized in advance for not being able to stay and shake hands with her fans (she doesn't want to spread the sickness).
What's amazing is that the band booked a double show last night (one at 7pm and one at 9pm). Talking to one of the crew, he wasn't so sure that there would even be a 9 o'clock show!* However, if they were to play, he said that the second show would contain a set of completely different songs! Cowboy Junkies have produced so much music in their long-spanning career that they have the luxury of playing for hours and hours and never having to repeat songs. I can attest to this, having seen them at the Guthrie Theater in 2000, they did a double-set and jokingly said that they didn't want to hire a warm-up band because they were too greedy and wanted that extra hour to play more of their own songs.
Cowboy Junkies are currently on tour in support of their Nomad Series of four albums. I saw the nice five-disc boxset (there are limited autographed version on tour for $30). You can pick up the boxset when you see the siblings, Margo, Michael (guitars), Peter Timmins (drums) and Alan Anton (bass)… or there's always amazon.com but you have to wait a few days before it's available for sale (April 17th).
PS, I thought they did another cover from the Trinity Session (Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight"), but it's not listed on the setlist.
* UPDATE: From Dakota Jazz Club: Margo not only played the second show, the band's front of the house audio tech said "I see them every night and this one was special - one of the best I've ever seen them do. she pulled it out!"
