Read More The Mynabirds The Mynabirds recently announced their Record Store Day release of "Generals" on 7", flipside is a non-album track, "Fallen Doves". |
The Mynabirds came to Minneapolis at 7th Street Entry to play some songs from their upcoming GENERALS album. I snuck over to 7th Street's older brother venue, First Avenue, to take a peek at Andrew WK's insane party show. He was playing all the songs off his I Get Wet album, I half expected his nose to start bleeding on stage…
Back to the Entry, Mages started off the night. I've actually seen Mages before, about a year ago, and back then, I just didn't get the band. I think the band has it together now; they're starting to sound like a good pop-folk group, especially with their new songs announced ("Seasons Aplenty", "Am I Alive").
Big Harp is a husband-and-wife duo (Chris & Stefanie) with a drummer (Chris). Despite calling themselves Big Harp, they're actually a bit more country than I expected. They did songs from their 2011 Saddle Creek album White Hat, like "Nadine" and "Everybody Pays".
Judging from the wear and folds of The Mynabirds' setlist, I figure they played the same songs every night. Hearing the new songs from GENERALS for the first time, I have to say they're pretty rhythmic and catchy.
Their title track, "Generals" required everyone's favorite "audience participation", but luckily, it was kept to a minimum of "yes" and "love" on our part.
Last song on their set was an old one, "Numbers Don't Lie". Encores were two songs, the first of which was "What We Gained In the Fire".
The Mynabirds' last tour date is today at their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska at The Waiting Room. Look for their upcoming album, GENERALS, out in June on Saddle Creek Records.
