The Mynabirds recently announced their Record Store Day release of "Generals" on 7", flipside is a non-album track, "Fallen Doves".
The Mynabirds came to Minneapolis at 7th Street Entry to play some songs from their upcoming GENERALS album. I snuck over to 7th Street's older brother venue, First Avenue, to take a peek at Andrew WK's insane party show. He was playing all the songs off his I Get Wet album, I half expected his nose to start bleeding on stage…
Mages
Back to the Entry, Mages started off the night. I've actually seen Mages before, about a year ago, and back then, I just didn't get the band. I think the band has it together now; they're starting to sound like a good pop-folk group, especially with their new songs announced ("Seasons Aplenty", "Am I Alive").
Big Harp
Big Harp is a husband-and-wife duo (Chris & Stefanie) with a drummer (Chris). Despite calling themselves Big Harp, they're actually a bit more country than I expected. They did songs from their 2011 Saddle Creek album White Hat, like "Nadine" and "Everybody Pays".
Judging from the wear and folds of The Mynabirds' setlist, I figure they played the same songs every night. Hearing the new songs from GENERALS for the first time, I have to say they're pretty rhythmic and catchy.
Their title track, "Generals" required everyone's favorite "audience participation", but luckily, it was kept to a minimum of "yes" and "love" on our part.
Last song on their set was an old one, "Numbers Don't Lie". Encores were two songs, the first of which was "What We Gained In the Fire".
The Mynabirds' last tour date is today at their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska at The Waiting Room. Look for their upcoming album, GENERALS, out in June on Saddle Creek Records.

Scotland's Modern Faces is a new Britrock band, having toured with the likes of Kasabian, The Charlatans and Shed Seven.
Their debut double A single, "Pravda Scrolls"/"Cynical Brother", will be coming out April 9th. With influences from all the bands we love (Oasis, The Verve, The Stone Roses and Kasabian - yes we've written about all those bands), so they'll be a band on our list to watch.
Not a whole of information to work with here, The Cuban Brothers looks like they're currently based out of the UK.
Their new single, "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" (which is a free download from soundcloud).
W♥M Radio is available on iTunes. It's now much easier to find us and add us to your automatic podcast download.

The Mynabirds recently announced their Record Store Day release of "Generals" on 7", flipside is a non-album track, "Fallen Doves". The special 7" is available in five different paint colors (all hand-spray painted and numbered by band leader Laura Burhenn) and limited to 1,000 copies on black vinyl. The song, "Generals", is the title track from their June 5th album.
The GENERALS album is described as both a protest and concept album. In conjunction with the album, Burhenn has launched portrait project called The New Revolutionists. I looked around the website, it looks like they're portraits of American women who are active on political issues; women making a difference.
They are playing in Minneapolis tomorrow, with Big Harp, and ending their tour in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday. You can grab "Generals" song for free.
Didn't I tell you that Cursive is going to sell out their show at the 400 Bar in February? I have been told that the show on March 23rd (Friday) is sold-out. If you're a hardcore fan, I suggest showing up and being the first 10 or 20 in line because from experience, I know they reserve a few tickets at the door. I also know from experience that it's one ticket per person, which means you can't buy two or three tickets for a friend in waiting.
So if you show up early, one of the two opening bands is called Conduits.
Conduits' self-titled LP just came out Tuesday (March 20th) via Team Love, and the description I have is that the band is a bit shoegaze and draws inspiration from Jason Spaceman (Spiritualized), Beth Gibbons (Portishead) and Slowdive. You can probably throw in Mazzy Star and Blonde Redhead. Notice all those links? That's because we like those bands.
Conduits kick off their tour with Cursive and Cymbals Eat Guitars tomorrow:

Nada Surf is one of the few bands that we have covered since the start of W♥M. We've always liked them, and if you were lucky enough to be at SXSW this year, they played a few shows down there.
They are stopping in Minneapolis on March 31st at First Ave. You know that Saturday's First Ave shows ends around 10:30, or so, because of the nightclub that happens afterward. A staff at First Ave tried to make me stay because she thinks I'd get a kick out of seeing some of the clienteles. Maybe one day, I'll stay in after a show… just not March 31st because of Fanfarlo coming to town.
The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy is Nada Surf's first album in almost four years. Their last album, Lucky, which we reviewed, was in 2008. Reading about making of this new record, it sounded like it was tough, because their home recording studio in Brooklyn wasn't soundproof. According to singer/guitarist Matthew Caws, "We couldn't do vocals late at night, because the music from the bar downstairs would come through the floor."
When it's all said and done, Caws admitted that making The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy was a whole lot of fun. And they want to share that fun and excitement with you on their tour - see below.

Lovedrug's "Wild Blood" video came on MTV Buzzworthy last week, calling the song "the perfect soundtrack for your next road trip".
You can watch it on youtube.com.
The song is the title track from their Wild Blood album that came out in early March.
I'm pretty certain that they'll be doing songs from that album on their upcoming tour. They are stopping in at the Cause (previously known as The Sauce) in Minneapolis on April 1st. If you've ever been to a show at this place, it's a very, very tiny little place. I believe it's even smaller than 7th Street Entry, which everyone will agree that 7th Street is tiny. Once The Cause gets to a certain level, the door person will turn you away because of fire hazard safety codes, so I suggest if you really want to see them - show up early.

ARE YOUR MEDS MAKING YOUR SICK? by Robert S. Gold hunterhouse.com
I have my concerns that I may be a hypochondriac. That concern itself is typical of a hypochondriac.
The book "Are Your Meds Making You Sick?" plays a little on that quiet gnawing fear, that fear that whatever we are taking to make ourselves better is actually making us worse.
I will give kudos to the author, Robert Steven Gold, RPh, MBA, he does try to make it an interesting read by presenting each drug interaction as a story. Being the aforementioned self diagnosed hypochondriac, I can find bits and pieces of each case that I can relate to. Admittedly though, I am not a professed detective. Instead of stopping at each mystery and pondering the fun times, I just power through and read the solution.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to the average healthy young reader of WeHeartMusic. It reads much like the continuing education courses that I take online for my tech license. This certainly would be helpful for someone who is taking care of an elderly patient or who is themselves taking a dozen medications. All in all, it's a nice cautionary tale; obviously not a substitution for normal healthcare. The author himself repeats over and over again to consult your doctor. But who has the time to phone their doctor every other week to make sure they are not falling victim to a horrible reaction? I don't regret having read it and the book does put things in layman's terms so I'll just leave it at that.

From all appearances The Tel Aviv Sessions started out as a lark in 2008 when Israeli pianist, Idan Raichel, ran into Malian guitarist, Vieux Farka Touré, in a German Airport. Raichel was so effusive in his praise of the Malian guitarist he asked Touré if he could play with him sometime.
It wasn’t an idle request. Touré took him up on his offer and Raichel set aside time from his busy schedule to join Touré and his band for a concert in Cartagena, Spain. Two years later Touré returned the favor by joining Raichel’s own band for a concert at the Tel Aviv Opera House.
The concert went so well, Raichel suggested a jam session the next day. Raichel brought along his bassist Yossi Fine and Touré brought along Souleymane Kane, his calabash player. From there they played. Three hours, no game plan, this album is the end result.
There is definitely an organic feel to The Tel Aviv Sessions as each song flows right into the other. It helps that an African theme established in the first song “Azawade” keeps reappearing in later tracks. There is also a laid-back ease between the musicians. Just look at the below photo:
Yossi Fine, Idan Raichel and Vieux Touré taking a break.
A jam session is one thing, but how did they end up making an album? First, Raichel played the role as a gracious host. Not only did he create a welcoming atmosphere, he also let Touré have the first word and set the tone. Second, both musicians left any musical entanglements at the door. As their press release explains:

The Touré-Raichel Collective are two superstars, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli Idan Raichel. Their album, The Tel Aviv Session, comes out March 27th on Cumbancha Records.
Vieux and Idan rarely find themselves playing in such an unadorned, acoustic manner. Vieux’s regular sound is more electric with a hard driving rock groove. Idan’s virtuosity as a pianist is often shrouded in the lush, flashy arrangements of the Idan Raichel Project. The session gave each of them a chance to reveal the depth of their skill and talent.
Finally, the two artists clicked. It can happen. Even if one is an Israeli Jew and the other is an African Muslim, their musical languages provide a common ground or as Raichel explains, “Vieux and I share the same DNA. We are both deeply linked to the places where we come from, our family and spiritual roots. These are the things that really matter.”
Three hours laid the ground work for an album that will be released on March 27th with a stateside tour to begin in the middle of April. Not a bad outcome for a chance encounter at the airport. Who knew flying could provide such favorable results? I usually get pulled over pulled over by security.

+ with Black Box Revelation
I will report back on how the Brick "stacks" up to its other competitors like the Epic and First Avenue when I see Jane's Addiction and BBR.
Last night was the grand opening for Minneapolis' new concert venue, The Brick. Who better to cut the ribbon than Jane's Addiction, as they played to a sold-out show?
Since this is the first real show for The Brick, I'm going to talk about the venue, as much as the bands. There were a few hiccups in how the venue operated. First of all, there was a lot of staff, most of them knew as much as you did when it comes to venue questions (like where is the bathroom). Second, they patted everyone at the door and took too long to let people in. I was standing in line that went around the block, and we started moving at 8:30 (when Black Box Revelation started their set!).
I later found out when I entered that there was really only one way to get in the venue, a stair that lead to the main dancefloor. There is also a bottom bar room (which you cannot view the concert) and an upstairs area that is impossible to view the show unless you're right against the railing.
The venue, itself, wasn't as large as I thought. They said it can house 3200+ (* see update), but I figure less than half of that can view the stage with comfort. It is a long rectangle stretch that reminds me of The Fine Line Café's layout, but similar to the old Quest (now named Epic). Although it was advertised as sold-out, I felt that it really wasn't, considering that you can stand around without being crushed.
Black Box Revelation
Opening up for them is Black Box Revelation, a band that we like. Because of the tight security and standing in line, I had missed the first three BBR songs. I did remember them playing "I Think I Like You" and "My Perception" near the end of their set. It kind of made me mad that there were still people standing in line outside, because they couldn't let people in fast enough, while BBR was playing.
I didn't really think BBR's music mesh well with Jane's Addiction, and talking to the fans around me, they would agree. They also didn't know the duo on stage, so I suggest bringing along a big banner with the band's name on it next time? I would later spot the two (Jan and Dries) standing by the side of the stage, watching Perry Farrell worked the audience.
The audience for Jane's Addiction was older, as you would expect for a band that's been around since 1985. As you can see from the setlist, they did the hit songs, and only a couple of new ones from 2011's The Great Escape Artist ("Twisted Tales", "Words Right Out of My Mouth", etc). Not shown on the setlist is their first song, "Underground".
Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell both look in great shape. Farrell often jumps into the audience and Navarro lit up a few cigarettes. I got the impression that Farrell really love his fans, he kept trying to defend his fans, "let them enjoy the show" when the staff was asking them to leave a certain area upstairs* (see update).
Although I knew their big hit songs, "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop!", and knew about Perry Farrell's character (especially as the man behind Lollapalooza and Porno for Pyros), I just wasn't prepared for this weird burlesque show. I was at a viewing angle that I could only watch the dancers or the band, but not watch both at the same time. This made it hard to choose, because both were entertaining to watch.
For the dancers/backup singers: best part is the ninja birdman, weirdest part was the baby doll-head-bashing thing (what was that about?)
For Jane's Addiction: Best part was their encore, "Jane Says". They did not do a double-song encore, just the one.
Leaving the Brick took just as long as getting in, as we slowly walk through a narrow hallway. The guy next to me said it was like boarding an airplane, only much slower. I would later find out that you can also exit where we entered, which had a wider front door.
Anyway, since this is not normally the type of concerts I attend, I would have to say that it's an experience. I think if you're already familiar with Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro's various work, you'll feel right at home. Jane's Addiction broke up a few time, but they are back now, and currently on a world tour. Their new album, The Great Escape Artist, is out now.
Jane's Addiction at The Brick, Minneapolis (03/19/12)
UPDATE 03/21/2012: Since this review was written, there has been a huge backlash on the concert venue. No one was happy about the venue. According to Fox news (see video), officially the venue can hold 2,001 and the count of people at Jane's Addiction's show was 1,400. The reason why Farrell was upset was that people were trying to view the concert by lifting the curtains, via youtube.com: "Don't listen to him, don't worry about it! Don't f**** listen to him. Hey! Hey! Mister with the flashlight, hold that f***** thing open. Take that thing down, be careful you might have a riot on your hands. Open up that s***, let them watch the show, what the f***. Just twist it off, however that f***** thing comes off. Twist it off".
PS, I wasn't exactly sure where to put this in, but before Jane's Addiction came on stage, the male dancer with the fake mustache and hat came to the front and put chains on young girls to take back stage. I thought it some naughty things happening, but when the girls came back, one of the girl, Meg, tells me that they played a private two-song concert for them backstage. Not acoustic or anything, but fully plugged in.

I leave you with a very memorable video of SXSW! Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs! More videos on youtube.com
I previously mentioned Toronto's Austra, that Tasseomancy are part of Austra's touring band. I got a note that their new video for 2012 is for their song "Spellwork" (see it on youtube). The video is creepy with a mix of witchcraft and lots of smoke in the forest. It reminds me of The Wicker Man (the original, not the Nicholas Cage remake).
Anyroad, if you fancy some boobs, webhands, and women dancing around, this equally creepy video for "Beat and the Pulse" is not safe for work. For the clean version, head over to youtube.com.
Nite Jewel's album One Second of Love came out earlier this month. The lead single and video for "One Second of Love" looks like a scene from some 70s Satan movie. The video is creepy and scary, and had a bit of humor (if you stay until the end for the censored flash).

I couldn't figure out what this video for Emily Lacy's "Rise" is about. It starts off with a fire. Then a woman (I am assuming it is Lacy) in a tablecloth dress (?), her face covered with white paint. Then … is that the US Embassy? Yep, weird.
According to Lacy, the free EP (available on emilylacy.bandcamp.com) was inspired by the Occupy movement.
The Occupy protests really grabbed my attention and had an intense effect on my daily life. I was challenged by both the ideas and the physical logistics involved in the protests; how they took form and were dismantled, and what it meant to see all that firsthand. I got into the idea of witnessing, of bearing witness to conflict and confrontation. I started to see that ideas are really dangerous, that they can force us to imagine things differently, and I think the reason the major camps were stamped out is because they were too effective in bringing the heat, the fire, the pressure for things to actually change. The protest encampments were like a flame that would not go out. It was vital for me to just record the intensity of what I was witnessing.
Nada Surf at Waterloo. We are in line for the Third Man Records truck. We can hear some Nada Surf. Sounding good. Heard them at Mellow Johnny's acoustic on Thursday as well. Bike ride earlier today weather has been great. Need a shower and then back to music
Ian McLagan & The Bump Band at Yard Dog Day Party (03/17/12)
AOL is not working so here hoes an update for day. We saw Ian McLagan from the faces at the Yard Dog Party. It's an art shop with space in back for bands and parties. He doesn't really have a voice, but for 66 years he sings his heart out with a joy that so many others miss. Saw a couple no name bands as well. Not worth any more mention than that.
Now we are sitting outside the LBJ museum on a beautiful night waiting for Mumford and Sons. There must be 10,000 people inside.
Overall really good shows and they have been able to make the jump from small to large crowds in a short period of time. I'd seen them once before when they were third on the bill at the 400 Bar with Laura Marling.
They brought on a marching band from the local high school at one point. It was quite the scene with at least 40 people jumping down on the stage....
New material sounds great (no info on when it's coming out)....
No picture because sitting behind a fence didn't work well...
Early this afternoon, we tried to get into multiple day parties and had no luck, so we eat BBQ sitting on a curb and then went to Flatstock, a poster show.
Edward Sharpe is finishing up and ended with "Home", which gets a lot of airplay in Minneapolis.
