Cursive does it right, playing a good mix of old classics, along with some selected songs from their new album, I Am Gemini, at the 400 Bar, last night.
Conduits are a shoegaze band, also out of Omaha (the same city that Cursive is from). Both Conduits and Cymbals Eat Guitars had pretty short sets, possibly just around thirty minutes. They mostly did songs from their self-titled album, which just came out last Tuesday.
Some of the songs they played were "Top of the Hill", "Last Dirge" and "Misery Train".
I've seen Cymbals Eat Guitars before, they were just as loud then as they were last night. I have to say, I really dig singer Joseph D'Agostino's awesome belt guitar strap.
I had a pretty hard time understanding D'Agostino's vocals, which sounded really loud and screamy. The only song I know for certain they played was "Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name)" and "Plainclothes", both from their new Barsuk album, Lenses Alien.
On contrast, I thought Cursive's singer Tim Kasher vocals came through loud and clear. Throughout Cursive's set, songs like "This House Alive", "Big Bang", "A Gentleman Caller", "The Cat and Mouse", etc., all blended together without any pause or breaks. I got the impression that they have all the songs in the same order, with the same formula. It wasn't until later on their show that Kasher loosened up and mentioned how hot it was on stage (his shirt was soaked with sweat).
There were three songs for the encore; I believe they were "Dorthy at 40", "Sink To The Beat" and "Eulogy For No Name". Of course, all the fans sang along to the old songs, and it was good to see Cursive in top form last night.
Cursive is currently starting off on their two-month tour with Conduits and Cymbals Eat Guitars. I dub this the three "CCC" tour. Look for their new album, I Am Gemini, which is out now via Saddle Creek Records.
