The Asteroids Galaxy Tour played to a sold-out show at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on February 8th, 2012. There are few bands that I would break my so-called Winter hibernation mode, but, given the fact that I have been in love with this band since 2008, I broke my rule to see them.
The first thing you should know is that the audience were incredibly young for a typical show at the Entry. Many of the attendees had never been there before, some of them had their parents with them (because it was an 18 plus show), but almost everyone I asked that night, they discovered The Asteroids via that Heineken commercial! That’s strange, considering that the audience seems to under the drinking age.
Opening up for the Denmark band was a band called Vacationer. Based on hearing their music, I had guessed that they were a New York band (but minus the pots & pansy experimental thing).
The only music I could find on iTunes was a three-track EP called Gone, but they had a fair amount of music catalog to play live.
The best song on their set was when they “pick up the pace” with “Trip”, with its catchy line of “love’s not coming through” and weird warpy effects.
If you have never seen The Asteroids Galaxy Tour before, they are a large band, compared to the typical guitar/bass/drum combo. This includes a trumpeter, a saxophonist, and an extra guitarist, but it’s well worth it when you hear the brass play... giving the music an extra big band sound.
Everyone on stage looked quite happy to be performing, and they had this gig down to a T. It sure wasn’t their first rodeo, they’ve been doing this for a long time. Since their music were queued with a computer (for effects and extra sound), timing had to be perfect. That also meant that there were little inbetween chatter, which may be a blessing since no one wants to go to a concert to hear too much talking on stage.
Singer Mette Lindberg dressed in her typical glamorous fashion, a sparklingly dress and large sunglasses. Main songwriter and producer Lars Iversen is notabley bald, but to be honest, I can’t remember if he had hair when I interviewed him at SXSW in 2009. One thing is certain, Lindberg had amazingly big hair to offset any lack of hair on Iversen’s part.
As for the set list, please refer to the scan. A large majority of songs were from their new album, Out Of Frequency, which sounded great live. I was rather taken back when they did older songs, and the whole audience sang along - particularly for “Around the Bend”, which was the best song of the set because of the thunderous audience participation with the lyrics. You can hear “I’ll stay foreverrrrrrrr” ringing in your ears.
Of course, the encore song would be “The Golden Age”.I don’t believe they did “Hero” * (please see correction below), which is listed on the set list... but it did not matter because “The Golden Age” was what everyone came to hear.
Based on their strong reach and fan base, I would recommend getting tickets of their show in advance if you really want to see The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, this might be the only time you’ll see them at such a small and intimate setting.
