I just read on the Guardian Newspaper that The Stone Roses have re-united! Their show sold out instantly. I felt that it would eventually happen. What really blew me away is how old everyone in the band look. I mean, they looked like Keith Richards. But still, they looked happy, glowing almost.
90s Britpop owed a great deal to the Madchester, which The Stone Roses was clearly spearheading the movement. Oasis' Noel Gallagher claimed that when he first saw The Stone Roses, it was one of the best moment in his life.
I got into Morrissey and The Smiths in 1991, and by that time, because of my British music interest, I heard about The Stone Roses and The Charlatans through other Anglophiles and Melody Maker newspaper. While I didn't go nuts over those bands, I really, really love the self-titled debut Stone Roses album. Every song on the album was perfect, it's one of the few albums that I can listen through straight without skipping any songs. It is a perfect album.
I later got a re-mastered anniversary edition of the original album, although they remixed and polished those old songs, it wasn't the same!! I guess, after loving the original mix, I couldn't bring myself to enjoying the new mix. The original mix had its flaw and all, I thought that was part of the charm!
By the time their difficult second album came out, Second Coming, no one cared. I liked it, despite the album going a bit more "rock" with its chief guitarist John Squire, showing off his guitar playing talent.
It didn't last, by 1996, the band called it quits after only two albums.
Squire went onto The Seahorses, singer Ian Brown had a few solo albums, bassist Mani went to join Primal Scream, and drummer "Bucket Hat" Reni joined Black Grape.
It's 2011, and I'm happy to report that all original band members have once again came back home to The Stone Roses.
