I did give Liam Finn a hard time for skipping Minneapolis, the last time he went on tour with The Luyas in April 2011, but I take it all back. All is forgiven as he returned to Minneapolis at 7th Street Entry, last night.
On tour with Liam Finn is Marques Toliver, a US-born musician, but I believe he may be living in the UK (based on hearing his accent). He didn't play for very long, perhaps only five or six songs, but what I heard, I did like the space in his melody and music. He does the music loop thing that's all the rage with one-man-bands, playing a section and layering back with another sound. He spent most of his time on the violin, but he'll also throw in a reference to Diana Ross (with a "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" medley)... something that's not associated with classical viola.
My favorite song from his set was a song about a woman and man coming down to the waterfall in "Charter Magic".
As soon as Liam Finn came on stage, he was greeted with a "Happy Birthday to You" song, as sung by his eager and devoted fans. Finn would later confessed that he spent 9/24 at midnight celebrating his birthday in Chicago... and that Minneapolis was his birthday hungover.
He started right into a drum solo. It was loud and full of energy. Right away, I can tell that this wasn't going to be like his dad's softpop adult contemporary rock songs. To be fair, I have not seen Crowded House live.
As you can tell from the setlist (see photograph), Finn does it right with mixing in new and old songs. The new songs done live ("Cold Feet", "Real Late", "Don't Even Know Your Name", "Roll Of The Eye", "Jump Your Bones") are from his mid-June release of FOMO. I wasn't too familiar with them, but they sounded great. Each song sounds very epic, and after each song, you'd think that was the closer (but that honor goes to "Lead Balloon", a fan-favorite from his debut 2007 album, I'll Be Lightning).
Liam Finn is wrapping up his tour in October, be sure to come early to check out Marques Toliver. Check out Toliver on NPR's World Café with David Dye. Toliver's debut EP, Butterflies Are Not Free, was released September 13th via Bella Union Records. Liam Finn's third album, FOMO is out now on Yep Roc Records (go to the link for a free download of "The Struggle").
