On the back of their fifth album, Future Primitive, The Vines have been doing a lap of Australia to show it off. To be perfectly honest, The Vines third and fourth albums passed me by without knowing, so I was more than surprised that they'd made it to number 5. Based on this revelation, I was very intrigued to hear how the boys were sounding these days.
Shamefully that last time I'd seen The Vines was at the trusty old Vic on the Park in Marrickville back in oooh 2002? oh the memories. So as you can see , a Vines viewing was well overdue.
So... enter into what seemed like a sold out Metro Theatre, which was quite nice on a slightly chilly winter night. Quite a young and boisterous audience (including one young lady, hoisted onto a young gentleman's shoulders, very close to flashing her tits) was loudly awaiting the band to come onstage. Entertaining in themselves.
First thing i noticed of the band was the lovely matching hats that the two band members either side of Craig were wearing. They also had matching hairstyles. Accidental? Who knows! Similarities stopped there though.... the guy on the left (looking at the stage) had at least three times more attitude than the guy on the right. high-fiving the crowd, pushing over cymbals and the like. How rock'n'roll! Craig (i must apologise for not haven't a clue what the other guys names are) was wearing one of their own t-shirts (available from the merch stand), which to me, looked quite Stone Roses-esque. But that's just my opinion.... and who wants to hear that!
With respect to the music. The songs were hard and fast; speeding through about 15 songs with minimal chit-chat in between. It was relieving to hear many songs familiar to those who really only knew their first album, Highly Evolved. Accompanied by definite jigging on the tiers that make up the Metro theatre, with more vigourous "moshing" and crowd surfing occurring down on the floor. The kids loved it!
To summarise, a raucous evening was had by all. Songs were short and sweet. To the point rock'n'roll. The Vines havent lost it.
Gimme Love! Watch the video (or close your eyes and pretend you're watching them live).
Catch them before they finish touring!
