Here are some music festivals that is coming up in September and October,
in honor of The Festival Ladies' recent Splendour in the Grass misadventures.
We do sometime get invites, but unfortunately many of these events are well out of my traveling budget - but feel free to keep sending them to me.
ALSO: Lara will be covering CMJ 2011 in October. Very excited to see what she has to say about the new College Music Journal shows. Read her CMJ 2007.
BREAKING NEWS: We previously mentioned Afro-Punk Festival (starting tomorrow), but according to news.weheartmusic.com, the show is canceled due to Hurricane Irene:
SNOWY RANGE MUSIC FESTIVAL
September 2-4, 2011
Affordable: $95 (3 days)
Laramie, Wyoming
snowyrangemusicfestival.com
From the looks of things, this is a camping music festival ... which is actually perfect for relaxing on a Labor Day weekend. There is a one-time $33 fee for overnight parking for campers, RVs, and Tent, but it's a lot cheaper than renting a hotel in the area.
The major headliners are pretty popular (George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, Michael Franti and Spearhead & The Neville Brothers), but it shouldn't be an awful time because there is a capacity of only 5,000 guests. I've been to massive festivals, trust me, it's better to attend a smaller-sized one.
The complete weekend line-up includes:

The City of New York has rescinded all event permits for Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th because of the impending Hurricane Irene. The Afro-punk festival has been barred from holding any public assembly in Commodore Barry Park this weekend. Afro-punk staff have been meeting with officials and sponsors to try and avoid cancellation but have had to cancel this weekend’s festival due to safety concerns. The event organizers are regrouping to plan the next steps and will keep the public updated.

FYF
September 3, 2011
Affordable: $40
Los Angeles, California
fyffest.com
Formerly called "F*** Yeah Festival", this is more or less a punk-rock festival, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. This event is all-ages and will run from noon to midnight (isn't there a curfew for underage kids?)
Full line-up:
I don't know if this was the case for previous year, but it looks like there will also be a comedian tent! Full comedy details at news.weheartmusic.com
POPPED!
September 23-24, 2011
Affordable: $110 (2 days)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
poppedphiladelphia.com
Some really awesome bands are playing at this show - including Cage the Elephant, Foster the People, Vaccines, Mates of State and Kreayshawn (12 million hits on her Gucci Gucci song!)
This show is described as a music and "food bazaar". So, if you're going, trying out the "infamous Philly Cheesesteak Cookie".

WALK THE LINE FESTIVAL
October 7-8, 2011
Cheaparama: £12.00 (2 days)
Cheltenham, UK
walkthelinefestival.co.uk
This isn't a Johnny Cash festival or is it very big. I'm pretty sure none of you can point out Cheltenham on a map, so I'll just leave it at that...
Lineup for a small show like this typically showcase a lot of local bands from around the area, which also means I've never heard of any of these bands:
Apparently, this is the third year that this festival is taking place. It is organized by Kiss My Face music, which looks to be a booking agency.
DeLUNA FEST
October 13-16, 2011
Little pricey: $149 (3 days)
Pensacola, Florida
delunafest.com
I previously briefly mentioned DeLuna Fest here, but that was in March. As of this writing, all their bands and schedules are all finalized.
There are some great bands playing (Ladytron, Weezer, Stars) vs "mega rock" acts of previous years.

FEST
October 28-30, 2011
Affordable: $100 (3 days)
Gainesville, Florida
thefestfl.com
This is the 10th anniversary of "Fest", a punk-themed music festival, taking place in Gainesville, Florida. Our theory on punk music is that fans of the genre are generally younger, so, I think they are missing out on some hardcore fans being an 18+ event. Plus, since you can't buy single-day tickets, fans might not want to pay $100 to see one or two bands...
The good thing is that there are three million bands playing, personally have not heard of any of them, except a few (Against Me!, Minneapolis' Dillinger Four, Less Than Jake). I see that Kevin Seconds is on the bill (randomly saw him at NXNE) and K Records' Pine Hill Haints (which incidentally, I do have their upcoming record for review) and a non-punk trio Greenland is Melting - their new folk/bluegrass album is called Where Were We out September 27th via Paper + Plastick Records. See Greenland is Melting's full tour dates at news.weheartmusic.com. Off topic, but Where Were We is a great Lucksmiths compilation.
