THE LADYBIRDS
ladybirdsrock.com
Although we don't really get to many CDs in the mail these days (per my request), it is still a much better way of getting a band in front of my face vs the hundreds of music emails I get.
So, The Ladybirds' album is called Shimmy Shimmy Dang, to be released on September 6th, 2011, via Departure Records. I listened to it today, it's actually quite good. I've always been a sucker for throw-back retro rock, as I've previously mentioned.
Sarah Teeple sings on most of the songs, with the exception of the all instrumental track "Shallow Orbit" and the sort-of-duet "She's Alright".
The Ladybirds' music and vocal ranges from sassy devil-may-care attitude on "Who You With?" to heart-broken girl on "Let's Start A Family (Tonight)" to semi-independent woman on "I'm Gonna Scream". Their versatile theme can best be sum up on their "Stay Gone" song, which is split in parts one and two. The first is a slow, sad reflection ... while part two brought the song to an all-out crazy apes rock.
If you like retro rock, circa 1950s, you should check out this album.
Here are the few dates I have from them:
NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS
www.noelgallagher.com
You know I love Oasis, so I'm always happy to mention Liam and Noel whenever I get the chance.
As it is, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' first US single is called "If I Had A Gun". He will make his first network television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on November 10th.
What I'm probably more excited about is that Noel will be doing some selected US dates and will do Oasis songs (unlike his brother's band, Beady Eye). When asked about doing classic Oasis songs at his recent press conference, Noel said "I'm proud of them and of what they mean to people, I'll never do a gig without playing them. They're like drugs to me."

WHITE BIRDS

Grizzly Records wanted me to know about Philadelphia's White Birds. Apparently, this band rose from the ashes of Drink Up Buttercup.
They said the band sounds like Brian Wilson (who dissed us at NXNE) and other "pet sounds" like Fleet Foxes, New Animal, and Tyranosaurus Rex. I did sample some of their songs, vocals and music sounds muffled, which may have been deliberate.
I know they're trying to make interesting music with effects and ghostly sounds, but it's just not my cup of tea. What I can tell you is that these sort of experimental sound often works better live, not on a recorded medium. At least for me.
And guess what? They're on tour:
Their self-titled EP will be limited to 100 cassette tapes and only available to pick up at their September tour dates with Asobi Seksu or via grizzleyrecords.com.
