If any bands are playing at that venue, I automatically say "yes" to covering it. The Cedar is one of my favorite places to see music.

Jolie Holland and Sallie Ford stopped by Minneapolis last night at the Cedar Cultural Center.
The crowd were a little older, mostly married couples, and surprisingly quite dressy for a Cedar event. This event was a seated show, so it was a nice change of pace from my usual standing poprock concert.
I think it's always funny when bands play to a seated venue, how extraordinary quiet it gets. Bands are always extra awkward when every noise they make can be heard loud and clear across the room.
I was there last night to see Sallie Ford, although, I was curious what Jolie Holland sounded like solo, since I do own a Be Good Tanyas album from a while back. Holland, it seems, is a massive Michael Hurley fan, doing two covers of his song. She sings with a weird snarl and in between tuning her guitar (which are done often), she tells long stories of her past. She's lead an interesting life, from raising Hungarian Vizsla sled dogs to searching for that perfect drummer (for "Honey Girl") and her deep, deep love for the book "The Master and Margarita".
Holland mostly did songs from her solo albums, although she did do a Be Good Tanyas song called "Littlest Birds", which she claimed originally had an African beat and rhythm to it.
As for Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside, I have to confess, I'm loving her album, Dirty Radio, since I heard it when I was writing the preview to this show. The album has a weird throwback to southern honky tonk rock. Plus, Ford's vocals are adorable, especially when she curse. If you see her live, you can tell she's a sweet girl.
Sallie Ford did basically the entire Dirty Radio live, adding in a few extra tracks. A new song, "Lip Boy", sounded great.
Highlight from her set includes "Poison Milk" (the song is about a job that requires her to be in the "dish pit"), "Cage" (about an evil boss she once had), and the last song on their set, "I Swear" (a great request for better music, "the radio, they all sound the same").
I love it. I love that Sallie sold a lot of her album, Dirty Radio, via LP (which comes with a digital download code), she sure made a lot of new fans last night.
