Architecture in Helsinki and Hooray For Earth stopped by the beautiful Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last night, June 9th, to show us some dance moves.
Starting off was Hooray for Earth, from New York. They seem like a new band, but the way they compose themselves on stage suggests they've been around for a while. They look weary and spent, but they're happy to be on stage and playing to the crowd at the Varsity (which incidentally had a nice turnout, even early on).
They were surprisingly more electro-synth than I thought, possibly thanks to the two keyboards, standing on each side of frontsman Noel Heroux.
Their 45-minute set consists of songs from their Dovecote album, True Loves, which was released a few days ago, June 7th. The album drew a lot of comparison to MGMT, and after having listening to their live stream of the album via Spin.com, I can understand where the comparison comes from - but it's unfair to compare the two. MGMT has gone more psychedelic. Still, one thing is certain, the audience last night absolutely loved the band.
Hooray for Earth didn't do too much talking in between their songs, and when they do, it's pretty amusing. When they said they were called Hooray for Earth, the audience, understandably shouted out "hooray!", and Heroux responded, "that never gets old". They look like they are having a lot of fun on tour too, spent Wednesday night "disco bowling" in Fargo.
They ended their set with their title track, "True Loves". It's hard to ignore that brilliant drum intro that starts the song.
Architecture in Helsinki did a lot of old stuff ("Wishbone", "Do The Whirlwind", "Hold Music"), which is good. The new song, "That Beep", sounded great live. Lots of dance moves on that one.
They sounded more funky than I though, dedicating "Do The Whirlwind" to people who have a fear of LeBron James.
Encore included the 'slowjam' "B4 3D" and a cover of Londonbeat's "I've Been Thinking about You".
If you want to get some fun in your life, these two bands makes for an excellent bill. They're touring until late June, although Architecture in Helsinki promised (or threatened?) that they'll be back in August.
