Alchemy Music Festival looks like a DJ-based party, it takes place in Cavour, Italy. As I have previously mentioned, I'm not in tuned with DJs, and especially since this is mostly Italian DJs, I have no idea who any of these mixers are. But the lineup is finalized, looks like all-around fun from 2pm to 4am. See details below.

The countdown to the Alchemy Music Festival in Mauro Picotto’s hometown of Cavour is in the final stages. Running high on adrenalin and espressos, the festival team – which includes Mauro himself – is buzzing with exciting news. Top of the list is a celebrity-laden line up of global artists that include Mauro, Mark Broom, Christian Smith, Yousef, Luca Morris, Mihalis Safras and more. Then there is the announcement of the top winners of the Alchemy Festival Competition: Chilean Yerko Alejandro (commonly known as Montrealer and based in Canada), Rome-based Italian DJ Marco Ferrantelli and Enrico Sangiuliano (Enrichetto) from Reggio Emilia. They will be competing on the Saturday of the festival for the first place title. Mauro says they all submitted tracks that were really original and finely executed – now it’s just a matter of seeing who has the charisma to win the crowd. Mauro is distinct about the feeling he wants the Alchemy Festival to generate: “I want people to be in the mood to have a good time – to dance and party and enjoy being together. This festival is a celebration of my life. A way to say thank you for everything I have.”

Billed as "31 nights of back-to-back live music", this festival is a whole month of music. Probably not feasible if you want to take vacation to see the entire lineup, unless you live in London, but it's defintely worth it when "every ticket to the iTunes Festival is free" (but it looks like you have to "win" a pair of ticket to see the event; good luck!). If you don't live in London, they are streaming the whole thing (or on demand for a limited time) via the iTunes application.

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, said, "We are really excited to do the iTunes Festival in July and to perform at the legendary Roundhouse. And the fact that it's going to be broadcast to so many people is really exciting, because making music is more about the audience than the band sometimes. I feel like the opportunities we have to reach out to more people through technology is a wonderful thing; to see the world get together and experience music, live".

Line up looks incredible, would really love to see Paul Simon, MSP, Beady Eyes, Duran Duran, Moby... basically every band listed below.

Rock the Bells festival is a travelling music festival, hitting San Manuel Amphitheater in Los Angeles on August 20, then Shoreline Amphitheatre in San Francisco on August 27, then Governor’s Island in New York and wrapping up in Boston on September 10.

Already confirmed headliners includes some major hip hop stars, including: Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Cypress Hill, Erykah Baduand, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star, Raekwon & Ghostface and more.

If you are interested in cheaper presale tickets, the general pre-sale starts June 4th.

The most interesting thing on the press release is that Cypress Hill will be performing their entire 1993 album Black Sunday, the album features their big hit song, "Insane In The Membrane". Insane in the brain!

Festival co-founder and Guerilla Union head Chang Weisberg had this to say about the festival: "I am excited that this year's Rock The Bells will continue its rich history and tradition by presenting the best and most ambitious festival programming in Hip Hop. The bar has been set high and this year's line-up will certainly stake its claim. In its seventh annual Afro-Punk Festival, they have announced their lineup, including Cee-Lo Green, Fishbone, and Santigold!

Expect to see loads of skateboards and BMX bikers all around, as well the unusual food vendors (this year will feature "cuisine from around the world") and the usual music fun.

I don't live in New York, but I would definitely want to attend what the New York Times calls a "rock and rebellion squarely in the category of African-American music. I got a glimpse of the Afro-Punk show, when they took their show on the road.

Willamette Week's MusicfestNW announced their initial lineup for its 2011 festival (see full listing below). Like their inspiration of SXSW, this festival looks like it takes place at various venues, but what makes this interesting is that there are three main outdoors show exclusively for MFNW.

The $115 wristband will grant you access to pretty much everything MFNW has to offer, over the course of the five-day music festival. If you're on the cheap, or just particular about who you want to see, there is the $70 ticket, which will only grant you one of the three outdoors show.

Like Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam decides to create their own music festival, in celebration of their twenty years together as a band. The line up consists of Eddie Vedder's hand-picked artists, including The Strokes, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Liam Finn (we like his dad).

I originally thought this festival was in Chicago (a city that I've sworn against because of their toll roads), but it is in East Troy. It's semi-close enough for me to drive, but I probably won't make an effort since I'm not that massive of a Pearl Jam song, but I know many of you guys are. If you don't want to put up all the fuss of driving, you can either fly in or take a long bus trip over the long The Labor Day Weekend.

POP Montreal turns ten this year, and they are throwing a huge festival. This Canadian festival looks massive, they said they attracted over 50,000 attendees last year, so expect the same turn out this year, especially because of their anniversary.

They are going to have over 300 bands, 50 events in arts/film/fashion, and will take place over five days in September. General pre-sale goes on sale on June 2^nd, and prices starts at $250 (early bird special).

Movement: The Detroit Electronic Music Festival is an annual electronic/dance/DJ music festival that started in 2000. This year's headliners looked amazing, especially with Fatboy Slim and Felix da Housecat, but, unfortunately, we've just missed the festival (but there's always next year!).

What's kind of cool is that Red Bull sent me some updates on the recent event, including some great photos of DJs and people having a good time. It looks like a good time all around, too bad it's not the sort of festivals that I'm interested in.

I can tell you that, like Mazda, Red Bull invests back into the music community, partnering with the music festival to bring DJ Godfather, Hudson Mohawke, Daedelus, Dam-Funk & Master Blazter, Goldie ft. W♥M110: "Macho Man" Randy Savage RIP

Cristina and I did a "Macho Man" Randy Savage and NXNE recording, which I had to split up in two parts. The first part is about Macho Man, which did run a little too long (about ten minutes).

As a child growing up in the 80s and 90s, I watched a lot of WWF (later WWE, no thanks to the World Wildlife Fund). Was never a fan of NWA (later WCW), the league that generally had "Nature Boy" Ric Flair as champion. As Cristina said, they were also considered a second-rate wrestling compared to WWF.

I have a lot of good memories of watching Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, André the Giant, Big John Studd, Jake the Snake, Hulk Hogan, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, the Heart Foundation, and, of course, "Macho Man" Randy Savage. They were all so colorful! They were always fueding with each other.

A little trivia, but did you know many stars of wrestlers are from Minnesota? Sure, we all know Jesse "The Body" Ventura is from here, but Minnesota is home of these wrestlers: Barry Darsow, Greg Gagne, Verne Gagne, "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, Nikita "The Russian Nightmare" Koloff, Bam Neely, "Mean" Gene Okerlund (technically not a wrestler), "Ravishing" Rick Rude, and Tom Zenk.

Bonus section: HBO's Game of Thrones! What a great show, I'm really enjoying the plot. Episode eight, to air next Sunday, will feature George R.R. Martin's script for the show (most of the previous episodes were written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss, based on Martin's first book of A Song of Ice and Fire).

Other bonus song is Phoebe Cates & Bill Wray's song "Just One Touch", which appeared on the soundtrack for the sex comedy film, Private School (1982).

KQ's Rock Stock 2011

Basic Information Founded in 2011, KQ's Rock Stock features Styx, Cheap Trick, Badfinger, Lamont Cranston, and our Battle of the Bands winner, Troy Castellano. Rock Stock at the Midway Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Sunday was the local classic rock stations KQRS' Rock Stock. Lineup was the typical lineup for an event like this, local band who won a battle of the bands (Troy Castellano), a local band who had been around since the late 70's (Lamont Cranston), Badfinger, Cheap Trick and Styx. Turnout was OK at best. Their sister station, 93X, had 7,000 the day before for metal bands and at best KQRS got 3,000.

Now for me power pop is the music I have lived since I was early teens. "No Matter What" by Badfinger was one of two 45's that were my first record purchases. Needless to say, I have been a fan of the band since then. For those who don't know them, or their sorry story, it's worth looking up. Signed to the Beatles label Apple, they had several hits, got screwed by their manager, lead songwriter commits suicide, they breakup, regroup in various incarnations, another member commits suicide, etc...

JOEY MOLLAND of BADFINGER

Joey Molland, guitar player and songwriter, happened to marry a girl from a Minneapolis suburb in the 70's and lives here today. His latest incarnation of the band played a 45 min set. Played the hits, "No Matter What", "Baby Blue", "Day After Day" and "Come And Get It". He likes to share the spotlight with the guys in the band letting several sing lead and he seemed to be having a good time. He has an infectious smile and is a really good guitar player. In their heyday, they were as good as any pop band. Today, they really amount to a cover band with one original, but the songs carry the day. Check out the LPs or CDs of Straight Up or No Dice, for a sense of how good these guys were.

Cheap Trick was next and they played a 90 min set. These guys are amazing. They have their set down, cranking out one song after the other. Yes, they play stuff from Cheap Trick at Budokan as you would expect; how could you not want to yell, "I want you to want me...". Very tight band and they sounded great.

Highlight for me was a cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" with Joey Molland trying to keep up with the chord changes. Rick Nielsen, the guitar player, must of had 15-20 different guitars with him, and he is still jumping around, flying leg kicks, like he is in his 30's. He also had a great line about anybody wanting to see a naked 62 year old guy; he is smart enough to answer his own question and say you don't. Also, Robin Zander sounds great. Most guys his age start to lose their voice, or have to lower their register, but I didn't get that sense from him. Can't wait to see them again next year...

Set list included "Surrender", "California Man", "The Flame", "Auf Wiedersehen", "Dream Police".

If you don't like crowded hipster shows, best avoid this one, otherwise get your tickets before they sell out.

Quite an early, but sold-out, gig for Arctic Monkeys and The Vaccines at First Avenue, in Minneapolis, last night, May 28^th.

First of all, this is an excellent billing, unlike previous years of teaming up Arctic Monkeys with the all-girls pop group The Like, in 2009, and punk-ish Be Your Own Pet in 2007, Vaccines seems more garagey rock and in tune with what Arctic Monkeys are all about.

Just to give you a little background on The Vaccines, they're a fairly new band, having only formed last year. They signed to Columbia Records and released What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? in the UK in March (I was told by a fan at the show that their album isn't out in the US yet and they were going to pick up the album at the merch table). I did get a chance to listen to the album, which comes out May 31^st, and I really like how they sound like they're a band from the 60s, particularly how catchy "Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)" and "A Lack Of Understanding" sounded on the album and live (so much I had to tweeted it).

They ended their set with their most energic song, "Nørgaard", something about "going steady", but since she's only seventeen, "she's probably not ready". It's a pretty fun, but short, song, but it definitely keeps the audience wanting more.

So, this was my third time seeing Arctic Monkeys, so it was nice to see the band grow from naive clean-cut youth, to shaggy-haired dude, to dome bowl hair. Performancewise, I noticed that Alex Turner is doing more on stage now - whether it's jumping on the drum stands, or talking a little more between songs.

He knows his audience, after the slowest song on their set, "Cornerstone", Turner said, "I know what you want to hear, you want to hear more like this--". He then started playing the intro to "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor".

As you can see from the setlist, they did some new songs from their forthcoming album, Suck It and See, which isn't out until June 7^th. Highlight from the set is their first-ever live performance of "All My Own Stunts". According to Turner, they've never played the song live before last night.

If you can see both bands on the bill, it's worth it, otherwise, the following are dates The Vaccines are scheduled to appear in the US.

Little Man at Turf Club, St Paul (05/27/11)

Read More Little Man Chris Perricelli, aka Little Man, wrote on his blog that they're in the studios for a new release in Spring 2011.

I realized that Little Man isn't scheduled to play live for a while, so I knew I had to try to make it out to his Orbital Amusement EP release show at the Turf Club in St Paul, on May 27^th. Literally at the last minute, both Red Pens and The Rockford Mules bailed out on their appearance, with an emergency medical surgery and lack of drummer, respectively. The openers fell upon The Beatifics and Is/Is, which, unfortunately, I had to miss, due to a prior commitment.

I got into St Paul fairly late, and Chris Perricelli (Little Man), was already rocking on stage, with two hula hoop girls. Man, what did I miss?

For the next hour, Perricelli is giving his best, but looking quite pleased with the large turnout. The Current 89.3, The Blue Door Pub, Marshall Liqours and the Groveland Barbershop, have all been good to Little Man.

As you can see from the setlist, Perricelli played all the songs from his EP fairly early on, starting off with "Gorilla Fighter", followed by "Orbital Amusement", "Megaphone", "Found Is A Passion", "Shadow", and "The Tower". The rest of the show were hand-picked old songs from his previous three albums, including two from Of Mind And Matter ("Seal Of Secrecy" and "Tarots And Arrows").

I should also mention that there was a fantastic light show, coordinated by a man in the front of the stage. He was also putting in psychedelic colored liquid projections... which seems fitting for Little Man's 60s theme.

I am mistaken about the broken lights at 7^th Street Entry, the soundman just do not turn on the main lights. So, it was fitting for this dark and stormy night as a trio of Texan bands arrived in Minneapolis last night on May 27^th.

I didn't know what to expect of this mostly-lumberjacky audience, you know the type: button plaid shirts (preferably red-colored), beards, possibly carrying tools. I asked around, it seems like some of the audience's hometown are from Texas, some are were massive doom/drone fans. There seemed to be a lot of fans out last night.

Nowlikephotographs.com provided the music between sets, the DJ seems to really like his 80s remixes of Prince and MJ.

PURE X

SLEEP∞OVER

Starting it all off was Austin's Pure X, formerly known as Pure Ecstasy (although this must've been a fairly recent change because the poster and listing still bill them under their former name), they are a shoegazy with mostly Nate Grace singing over a melodic wave of sound.

Sleep∞Over was supposed to have three women (Stefanie Franciotti, Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown), but I thought there were just two last night. The two did a lot of harmonizing and there were a lot of fans in the front who were eager to see them play. They cursed themselves as amateurish when the soundguy didn't start on time and then the drum machine didn't work until the third song kicked in.

I didn't know This Will Destroy You was an all-instrumental band. I should have seen it coming when the stage was cleared and there were no microphones. Since there were no lyrics involved, I'll admit, it was pretty hard for me to figure out what songs were played. Let's just agree that they played stuff from their recently released album, Tunnel Blanket.

A lot of their song seems to be spacey, moody, with lots of room to breath, and then, surprisingly the occasional loud guitars are kicked in. Their songs are longer than the average pop songs, most of them over eight minutes, but to be honest, you could not tell when a song ends or begins. The audience tried and guessed when a song end, and you do hear clapping and whistling, as the band continued to play on.

While this sort of ambient drone is not the sort of the music I listen to, I was glad to have seen them. They will be continuing their tour through June with The Nighty Night, so check them out if you can.

FALCON: Say Goodbye

Brooklyn's Falcon released their debut album, Disappeared, on May 17^th, and you can preview a free track of "Say Goodbye" at bandcamp.com (or you can also check out the Star Wars video on youtube). As you can hear, it's a pretty rock-out-loud song.

I should also mention the name 'falcon' might be kind of hard for people to find them. Just so we're clear, the name is a tribute to band members, Neil Rosen and Shannon Ferguson, school classmate, Jared Falcon. He is currently institutionalized and left music writing behind, but Rosen and Ferguson worked on Falcon's cassette demos, found in a storage locker in 1988.

It's not clear if their debut album features all or some of Jared Falcon's songs, I know it does feature original songs by Neil Rosen, who said had this to say about Disappeared:

"It is a brief and moody record, I was inspired to write the songs for this record after seeing the Sean Penn film Into the Wild. During this time I was also expecting my first child. There is a side of me that loves nature and solitude. The idea of vanishing from NYC and my responsibilities was an alluring temptation to me at the time."

PS, be on the lookout for Falcon to compose the soundtrack to Daniel Wallace's book O' Great Rosenfeld.

As a cover lover myself, I'm happy to see that Brooklyn's Chiara Angelicola, aka Bird Call, have just released her covers EP, Other Creatures, out now on FHC Records.

I don't have the EP, but she covers some established acts like Nick Cave, Kate Bush, Beck, and Fleetwood Mac, but interestingly enough, also Man Man made it onto her seven-track EP. But that's not to say all she does are covers, in fact, she recently won a Performance category on the International Songwriters Competition with her original song, "Waltz In The Snow".

Fela Kuti, or simply known as Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist who pioneered Afrobeat music and was known for being a human rights activist.

Obviously the man had long history, but the most important bits you should know was that he was also a bit of a political leader. He even formed his own commune called Kalakuta Republic, declaring itself independent from the Nigerian state. After his release of his hit album, Zombie in 1977 (which brutality criticized the Nigerian military), the government responded by attacking his commune. His mother was murdered and Fela's music master tapes were destroyed in this attack. Fela, himself, was beaten almost to death. Throughout the 80s and early 90s, Fela was arrested on various reasons, but all political motivated.

Fela passed away at the age of 58*, but his influence and music are still felt today, with the Broadway music show, and, just announced, the "Movement of the People" parties, celebrating human rights. Fela actually doesn't even sing until nearly 16 minutes in, so it's quite a buildup.

Not really sure why, but Foster the People's name have been coming up a lot lately. Sally said they're on JJJ's hot band and I did end up spending some time with their debut album, Torches, while I was editing the podcast. The more I listen to such dancey groove like "Helena Beat" and "Pumped Up Kicks", I realized that they remind me a lot of MGMT. Whoever is writing their songs, they know how to write catchy songs.

Torches came out last Tuesday on StarTime International/Columbia Records, and already the buzz is amazing. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live doing their big, big hit, "Pumped Up Kicks". Which, incidentally, had a different album mix than the EP version that I've heard. In other Foster news, they've just had a piece on Spin Magazine and MTV's Push Artist of the Week.

Nat Baldwin: Weights

A few years ago, we saw that Dirty Projectors' keyboardist, Deradoorian, branched out on some solo material, this year we see their bassist, Nat Baldwin, releasing People Changes. The album just came out last Tuesday, May 24^th on Western Vinyl. As the label's name suggest, this company specialized in releasing vinyls of new music, but, of course, you can still pick up albums on CD and digital MP3s. I believe most of their vinyls also comes with an MP3 coupon, which is the right thing to do, in my opinion.

I don't have the liner notes for this album, but it sounds to me really double bass heavy, which probably shouldn't surprise anyone since Baldwin plays the double bass. Lots of chaos and experimental scratches on "Real Fakes" and crazy saxophones (?) on "Lifted" suggests to me that they have freestyle jazz influences behind them. Overall Nat Baldwin's sweet calming vocals and lyrics ground these songs in a weird folk-pop music.

I feel like these songs on the album were designed to be performed live, so it should be interesting to check him out in person. Too bad, he's not going anywhere near the Mid-West, but if you are on the East Coast and Canada, see below:

The Rhythms of Black Peru is the latest release from Secret Stash Records, on sale today May 24^th.

For fans of world music, particularly Latin-American music, you'll like this compilation. I think to understand this collection, you have to understand Peru's two main cultures: the Spaniards and the African slaves that were brought over. Somehow, over the centuries, these two distinctive music style fused together in popular music of what Secret Stash is calling Black Peru. You can hear these styles at work on this compilation, the Flamenco plucking ("Charango") and the clearly Africana rhythm ("El Mayoral").

As a beginner (clearly I am unfamiliar with these artists), it's a learning experience of where modern Salsa music comes from. But if you're an expert, you'll find that the artists compiled here are some of the most important musicians today.

Like 99% of Secret Stash's releases (with the exception of the Pena CD), they only press vinyls, but they'll also give you an MP3 download, so you can put the music on your iPod to go. What's really nice about The Rhythms of Black Peru is the vinyl is a mixture of black and white wax - indicating the mixture of Latin and African music.

Gardens & Villa - Black Hills

Gardens & Villa just announced their new single (and video) is called "Black Hills". I did get a chance to listen to it, which has a slow start, but once it gets going (especially with the backup vocals), it's pretty good.

Their debut self-titled LP will be out July 5^th on Secretly Canadian Records.

Other than that, I don't really know much about this new band. I can tell you that they are doing a ton of tour dates, and opening up for Foster the People. You know the story about Foster the People, I randomly saw them live was that I was very impressed with them when I noticed that only after two EP releases that they've amassed a ton of fans (all singing along to their songs!).

I know I'm flying out to NXNE the next day, but I have agreed to see Foster the People at the Fine Line on June 11^th. I'll also report back Gardens & Villa - I usually always try and catch the support acts.

Matt Bauer: Blacklight Horses

Matt Bauer is offering a free song, "Blacklight Horses" from his upcoming album, The Jessamine County Book of the Living (out June 7^th via Crossbill Records). New York Magazine called Bauer's newest collection of "haunting, weird folk music" and Under the Radar said "An album of fragile beauty", and judging from the free download, with ghostly violins, I agree. What I did ultimately liked about the song is that somewhere in the middle, it turned into a duet with Jolie Holland.

Incidentally, June 7^th is also the day he returns to Minneapolis, at the Aster Cafe. I've never been there before, but I am assuming it's a nice quiet (and tiny) venue. I think Holly from Zoo Animals is opening up.

HoZac Records is back again to curate the Blackout Fest that takes place in Chicago, coming up this week: May 27-28 at The Velvet Perineum in Logan Square. Unlike the previous nearly week-long music marathon, it's just down to Friday and Saturday this year. Although, I am told that there is a special opening party show on May 26th, so technically it's a three-day event.
