Read More Goldenboy is the nickname given to Shon Sullivan by Elliott Smith. The name obviously hold a special place in Sullivan's heart, so he kept it as a stagename.

Goldenboy's last stop on their five-week tour, which started at SXSW, ended at the 7th Entry in Minneapolis last night, April 12th.
Opening up for them were two local bands, The Sudden Lovelys (I actually misheard and thought it was "the southern lovelies") and Mages. The former are a music couple, and their sound is something I've always liked: boy-girl vocals (such as The Tall Pines and, recently, Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez). The rough country sound of Danny, compliment with a bewitching vocals of Paige.
The other interesting thing to note about The Sudden Lovelys is that their songs often shifts in different direction in the middle. It's like you're in second gear then suddenly out of nowhere you're in fifth gear. But it's good, I don't often hear bands doing this sort song structure.
They started with "Alone in a Room" and ended with a foot-stomper (literally), "Disarmer Was a Charmer". Highlight was their cover of White Stripe's "We're Going To Be Friends".
Mages is a difficult band to understand: are they medieval or renaissance or are they a folky/bluegrass band? I know that's what they're going for, but sometime, I just wish they sounded more madrigal rather than alt-pop rock music that they play.
I couldn't tell you what songs were played, their song titles don't make it obvious. This is not a bad thing, as it requires people to listen to their songs... but as someone who's never heard of them... lyrically they are interesting, not many modern musicians write songs about monoliths and towers or illusions and rainbows. For larpers, that's cool, for non-larpers, I'll admit, it's kind of weird.
I've previously mentioned that Goldenboy got their name from Elliott Smith's nickname for singer/songer Shon Sullivan. For some odd reason, I thought it would just be a quiet acoustic set with Sullivan and his guitar, but I was surprise to see that they are a full band, complete with keyboardist.
The five on stage seems very comfortable with each other, which, in some ways, I can understand that bond. Imagine all the adventures of sharing that much time in a van ("watch your step!"). I think they'd all agree that after this show, that they'll gladly head home for some much-needed rest.
They were promoting their latest album, Sleepwalker and did some songs from this album, including the title track, "Different Moon", "Holiday" (which is officially not on the album, but as a bonus download - you can hear it here) and an excellent closer number, "Body And Soul".
