I've been meaning to check out Rose's work after she left The Pipettes, and I finally got a chance with some extra cash over the Christmas season. I bought her album, Without Why, released on August 30th, 2010.
I should explain that I first time I saw The Pipettes, I was rather smitten with Rose Elinor Dougall, but she wasn't known as that longer name. She was simply Rosay Pipette. There was something in her vocals on "Judy", or maybe it was the hand-clapping, or maybe it was the DIY dress she made. I finally caught the band on their 2007 tour, talked a little to Rose for a bit and she broke some hearts when she said she missed her boyfriend.
So, I guess she left The Pipettes shortly after 2008, and spent most of 2009 working on her debut solo album. She started releasing a single here and there, but the full album wasn't released until last year. I was rather hoping that it would be more 60s-girl pop, but of course, deep in the back of my mind, I knew it wouldn't sound anything like her work in The Pipettes. Without Why proved it... unfortunately, it's not an album that I fell in love with.
While there are the pop-esque gems like "Fallen Over", and strangely "Start/Stop/Synchro", some of the songs are just too slow and sappy ("Goodnight", "Find Me Out", "Watching")... Not even her voice or good looks could save it. You may be disappointed if you were hoping for more Pipettes-type songs, so I would recommend avoiding this album if that's the case. If you like English sensitive girl-singer/songwriter, then Rose Elinor Dougall's Without Why might be for you.
