It looks like The Decemberists have left 1825 with their latest release, The King is Dead, released today on Capitol Records. While I can't say upon first listening to the new album that I like this new direction, I understand that as a band, they simply can't keep doing that British-era songwriting by candlelight. But personally, between you and me, their greatest album are on Kill Rock Star's Picaresque and Her Majesty the Decemberists (you can just tell that Colin Meloy is doing his best Morrissey song writing, and that's why I love The Decemberists).
Unfortunately, The King is Dead doesn't sound anything like their earlier works, instead, it sounds very Americana. Fans of early R.E.M. will really enjoy these songs.
My personal favorites are "Rox In The Box" and "Down By The Water", because as the song starts to slow down, I still want it to keep going. I can see why the later song is getting a lot of love on the radio charts.
I am interested in seeing where The Decemberists go from here, I suspect they'll continue their experiment in American folk music for a few albums... but I do hope they come back to the sound that I fell in love with.
I was hoping to catch them on this tour, but it looks like they've already sold-out their appearance in Minneapolis. If they are stopping by your town and haven't sold out yet, then I suggest buying your tickets in advance.

In other Decemberists news: the band is doing a live webcast on NPR Music tomorrow, January 19th at noon (Pacific Time). They are playing "Down by the Water" on NBC's The Tonight Show tomorrow, January 20th (I don't have a broadcast date, but it'll probably be within a week after their appearance).
This was reported last year, but I just found out about it this week.
I thought this really funny, that Usher gets his inspirations from The Simpsons.
I don't keep up with hip-hop, so this whole incident made me look into Usher... apparently he just released an album called Raymond v. Raymond and currently on tour*.
One thing about Koo Koo, is that they require a large interaction of the audience, so I would really hate to see these guys in front of non-participating or extra-shy watchers. They are always fun to watch and play along, so if you get a chance to see these guys, I highly recommend it.
Just wanted to quickly mention that I'll be taking it easy this weekend, since it's a holiday this Monday.
Koo Koo Kanga Roo wanted to let you know that they've just released The Golden Staircase of Destiny for free (or pay whatever you want). All the details are written on kookookangaroo.com, but I'll repost the important details below.
Oh, also, they are on tour, and if you've been paying attention to what I've said about Koo Koo, it's that they are absolutely a blast to see live. So, you gotta check them out. They've already played their first show today!

Anchor Factory, a small record label out of Germany France, have released "Die Geschenke" ("The Gift") a few days ago, January 12th. According to the press information, I think it was put together over the Christmas break.
Just quickly listening to the eight tracks, starting with the last track, "Girls In My Arms" (feat Prysmo) and working backward.
The compilation features other Anchor Factory artists, I'll confess I've never heard of them. I'm not what you would call a DJ expert, and I guess most house music just sounds the same to me.
What I can tell you is that I can listen to these songs and it's not a chore, unlike other records I've reviewed.
These songs are mostly instrumental, even on "vocal mix" of "No Good", there's hardly any lyrics. The songs feels very unnatural to me, like automatic robotic loops of beats (in particular "Danger House"). These songs reminds me of more popular DJ acts like Daft Punk.
While these type of house/dance music are designed to have repetitive sound for dancing purpose, I feel that you can enjoy them on headphones (to hear and appreciate all the layers and effects).
Full track listing below.
1. Alan Mathison – “Danger House” - 5:31
2. Debrie – “At Night” – 6:56
3. Prysmo - “Background” – 5:09
4. Tchong – “D.F.S.” – 8:44
5. Prysmo – “Reality” – 4:41
6. Leo Outlaw – “Leopard 909” – 3:37
7. Armagnac – “No Good” – 4:29
8. Pierre d'Albret ft. Prysmo – “Girls In My Arms” – 6:02
BRAIDS have been getting a lot of press, most of of what I've gathered is that they are lead by a chirpy young potty-mouthed singer called Raphelle Standell-Preston and that they sound like Velocity Girl. Since I do love Sarah Shannon, I did give them a listen.
The eight-track album is called Native Speaker, an eight-track album and comes out courtesy of Kanine Records.
Since I did get a chance to listen to the album, I'll have to say that they're not so much like Velocity Girl, but more experimental-pots-pans music like that of Yeah Yeah Yeahs... I think people who thinks the band sings dirty words, it's from "Glass Deers", which you can hear the "f-f-f-f*" word. I do like it when Standell-Preston sings, like on "Same Mum", but when the band just do instrumentals like "Little Hand", I'm
Their music fits nicely with what's hot on Pitchfork and Stereogum. So if you like that sort of atmospheric with a bit of static experimental music, you'll like BRAIDS. I sometime think that their music to could be performed with improvsation. Well, the good news is you can find out for yourself since they're doing a massive North American tour coming up in the Spring.

I know that we've been talking about Amanda Palmer a lot lately. I apologize if you hate her, but I love her and admitted that her live show was the best show ever.
I was sent her latest release Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, which is a weird collection of mostly live and studio tracks, recorded with the theme of Australia in mind. The album comes out on January 21st on Liberator Records, and, I could be wrong, but it looks like maybe it's only released in Australia (although I'm sure Palmer will make the album available worldwide).
We got a glimpse of the new album with the remix version of "Maps of Tasmania" featuring The Young Punx. As I have only just discovered last week, that the term "Maps of Tasmania" is a reference to a woman's area. Anyway, I guess if you didn't know, you'd figure it out with its lyrics "if it gets too bushy, you can trim". The version on the album is a different mix, but essentially the same catchy song. You can download a copy at amandapalmer.net.
Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, the band features a lot of cover songs ("Makin' Whoopee") and lots of ukulele. Not surprisingly because previously to Evelyn Evelyn, she did some ukulele Radiohead songs. When I saw her live, she mentioned that after her record contract expired, she just basically did whatever she wanted - and Radiohead was on her mind and came out with Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukulele.
There's also more live songs, but that may be a good thing, because it's just more fun to hear feedback (laughter/clapping) and Palmer messing up songs she's just written five minutes ago, like on "New Zealand".
The funnest song is for the strictly Australian spread, Vegemite, called "We're Happy Little Vegemites", which doesn't actually feature Palmer singing (I get the impression that this is a the children commercial song). While the audience is doing all the work with that other Vegemite song, it is completely different from Palmer's "Vegemite (the black death)".
The most interesting song is her cover of Nick Cave's "The Ship Song". The song's been voted as the top 30 Best Australian Songs on the APRA Music Award, so it's a bit to live up to. I sensed that Palmer had a nervous laugh when she started singing the song.
Amanda Palmer will also be tour throughout Australia in the next month or so. Be sure to see her in Sydney at the Opera House, as she's bringing on her hubby Mister Neil "Sandman" Gaiman and Meow Meow and Mikelangelo & The Black Sea Gentlemen. I would love to attend that show, it's only too bad I'm freezing to death in Minnesota.

Just wanted to quickly mention that teenvogue.com premiered Sahara Smith's "Are You Lonely" music video. I did get a chance to watch it, but it killed me that the video is not in high definition. The song comes from her debut album Myth of the Heart.
I was more impressed with her appearance on David Letterman in 2010, the video's in HD!
Here's her 2011 tour dates so far:
SAHARA SMITH 2011 TOUR DATES

Interestingly enough she's playing with The Bacon Brothers (yes, that's Kevin Bacon and his brother) on January 28th.
I have a friend called Madison, I don't think she was born in Wisconsin, but I did think of Maddy when I saw this musician called Madison. She has an EP named The Noise Some People Make out today (Tuesday, January 11th, on G Records).
It's only a short four-track EP, so I decided to give it a spin ... and I love it.
The first thing you should know that, after listening to "#1" and "Lights Low", she sounds like Norwegian's Annie (another artist that also really love).
I liked her enough to look for her other releases, although I was under the impression that this was her first EP because the information I got said that this was the first of a series of pop/art releases. It looks like Madison's been releasing music since 2004 with The Rest of Our Lives Is Tonight (under Race the Sun), and, more recently an all-remix album in 2010, Follow Me.
Basically, if you like pop dance diva music, you'll absolutely fall in love with Madison. I can see why she's getting heavy rotations on iTunes' Indie Spotlight and Dance categories.
A couple of announcements about tomorrow's date of January 11th, 2011 - probably not as epic as November 11, but all of those ones seems special enough (remember when Omen 666 came out on June 6th, 2006?)
iDAY (aka 1/11/11): VERIZON IPHONE
First up is the biggest news: Verizon will announce that it will have the iPhone on 1/11/11 at 11am in New York. This is a long time coming. I've had terrible experience with AT&T's cellular data for the iPad (sometime it works, sometime it doesn't, it just seems unreliable).
What I would love is to get a contract-free iPhone that can be on any network. Right now, the latest iPod Touch is pretty close to what I'm looking for, but it's still missing some key features such as the cellular radio and in-built GPS and digital compass.
UNO POR UN DOLAR Speaking of iPhone, the card game, Uno, turns forty and its Apple iPhone game will be sold for one dollar tomorrow. It's normally $4.99, so it's a good deal.
DC ONLINE... GOES ONLINE This online game has been delayed again and again... but it will finally see the light of day tomorrow. I don't know what all the excitement is about, I'm certainly not interested in buying a game and then paying for each month that I play the game. Besides, DC Online has one giant gorilla in the house: World of Warcraft. There's just no room for two subscription games in this space.
I am curious how the game will work out, seeing that it's mostly written by one of my favorite comic book writer, Marv Wolfman and art direction from one of my favorite comic artist, Jim Lee...
PIZZA WARS If you "like" Pizza Slut Hut on 1/11/11, they will be giving away 1,111 pizzas. Kind of a lame contest, but people love free stuff, so it'll probably be wildly popular.
Its rival Papa John is offering two pizzas for $11.11... too bad in keeping with the theme, it's 1 topping.
BOOK OF FACES Speaking of "like", that Facebook movie comes out on Bluray and DVD tomorrow. I have only seen the first half of the movie, but I get the feeling I know what happens in the end. I have a hard time believing that Mark Zuckie is that witty in RL.
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID There's a couple of albums being released tomorrow, including Cake's Showroom of Compassion and one of my (new) favorite band, Cage the Elephant's Thank You Happy Birthday.
These bigger bands don't exactly want to give away free music, so instead, I thought I'd mention Ursula Rucker's She Said.
Her album comes out tomorrow on Noizeyboy Records, here's an excerpt of what the press release:
As a poet and performance artist, Ursula Rucker has enchanted critics and fans across the globe with her diverse repertoire, captivating vocals and accessible poetic verse. On January 11th, she returns with a new album, She Said, an organic live studio album further showcasing Ursula’s diverse and complex artistry across many styles.
Her new and forthcoming album, She Said, is the 5th solo album, and is executive produced by Anthony Tidd, of Noizetrip, for Noizeyboy Records. This is Ursula’s first recording to feature a live in the studio session and focuses on Ursula’s well honed skill and prowess as an improv performance vocalist.
Ursula Rucker believes that art and poetry are catalysts for change. Her mission and calling is to heal herself, the planet, and its people through her art. While she sees the world as her community, she pays particular attention to the world of women, indigenous/diasporic people, and sufferers of injustice. Her poetry tells the stories of struggle, love, womanhood, peace, anger, injustice, and spirituality. As an artist who has performed in many continents, countries, classrooms, and community centers, Ursula sees herself as an ambassador of culture, socio-political issues, truth, and love.
It's good to have our regular co-host Sally back on to talk weather, girls, music, and such.
Topics up for discussions:
Death of Sydney Britpop (it happened New Year's eve). No more Britpop night, but, of course, we're keeping Britpop alive in 2011 here.
Edwyn Collins has a new album coming out called Losing Sleep. I love "A Girl Like You", and looking forward to his collaborations with Franz Ferdinand and, of course, Johnny Marr.
I've been meaning to check out Rose's work after she left The Pipettes, and I finally got a chance with some extra cash over the Christmas season. I bought her album, Without Why, released on August 30th, 2010.
I should explain that I first time I saw The Pipettes, I was rather smitten with Rose Elinor Dougall, but she wasn't known as that longer name. She was simply Rosay Pipette. There was something in her vocals on "Judy", or maybe it was the hand-clapping, or maybe it was the DIY dress she made. I finally caught the band on their 2007 tour, talked a little to Rose for a bit and she broke some hearts when she said she missed her boyfriend.
So, I guess she left The Pipettes shortly after 2008, and spent most of 2009 working on her debut solo album. She started releasing a single here and there, but the full album wasn't released until last year.
I was rather hoping that it would be more 60s-girl pop, but of course, deep in the back of my mind, I knew it wouldn't sound anything like her work in The Pipettes. Without Why proved it... unfortunately, it's not an album that I fell in love with.
While there are the pop-esque gems like "Fallen Over", and strangely "Start/Stop/Synchro", some of the songs are just too slow and sappy ("Goodnight", "Find Me Out", "Watching")... Not even her voice or good looks could save it. You may be disappointed if you were hoping for more Pipettes-type songs, so I would recommend avoiding this album if that's the case. If you like English sensitive girl-singer/songwriter, then Rose Elinor Dougall's Without Why might be for you.
Digital streaming movies. I've been thinking about this a lot lately ever since the Playstation 3 offered Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Vudu, on its network. This is interesting because Sony has their own digital movie rental, so these other streaming options are direct competition to Sony.
These on-demand rentals are still pretty expensive, considering if you rent a DVD from a Redbox it's $1 for 24 hours. What you are getting per rental is that it's fast and easy, although personally, if you want the best deal for the highest definition, you're probably better off buying or renting the bluray. I'm sorry, but having tested out these "HD" services, watching it on disc is far superior. Plus, you also need a really fast internet connection (read: at least 7mps download to watch these movies in HD). Currently only Vudu offers 1080p, the other services top out at 720p.
I tested out Blockbuster's services and discovered that you actually could not fast-forward or rewind if you choose to watch instantly. You can let it download the movie before watching to get those feature. I was also disappointed that the movies aren't in hi-def.
I also tested out Vudu's services, it's fast, but at even at my Comcrap's internet connection, I could not maintain 1080, I had to reduce it to 720p. I like Vudu, but it's kind of expensive.
I'm still going to stick to renting or buying discs. The best streaming deal is still Netflix, but unfortunately most of the good stuff aren't available for streaming and you still have to wait a full month. Still, for $7.99 a month, it's not a bad deal.
